Elza Comer (Joe) Spivey Jr., 47, of Gastonia, N.C., passed away Nov. 21, 2008.
Spivey was born May 1, 1961, in Cumberland County, to Elza Comer Sr. and Mary Alice Williams Spivey.
He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the National Guard.
Spivey was preceded in death by his parents; Mary Alice Williams Spivey and Elza Comber Spivey Sr.; his grandparents, Orville and Amanda Williams, Bedford and Rose Spivey; two sisters, Mary Cynthia Spivey, Janet Fay Spivey; and one brother, Darrell Spivey.

Jessie Blackwell Pruitt, 92, passed away Nov. 24, 2008, at DeKalb Community Hospital
Pruitt was born Aug. 10, 1916, in White County, to Jim Griffin and Bessie Mae Jones Griffin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, William Carson Blackwell, Stuart Pruitt; children, Eva Nell Graham, Billy Carson Blackwell, Jeanette Blackwell, Joann Blackwell; sister, Bernell McKinney; and brothers, Robert, Henry and Nelson Griffin.

Carolyne (June) Broyles, 68, of Maggie Valley, N.C., passed away Nov. 24, 2008, at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Elese Bennette Broyles.
Broyles was a native of Sparta and had resided in Los Angeles, Calif., and Springfield, Tenn., before moving to Haywood County, N.C., in 2001. She worked as an administrator in the Los Angeles school system.
Survivors include three brothers, Dale Broyles and wife Carolyn, of Heath, Ohio, Don (Gene) Broyles and wife Judy, of Kenton, Ohio, Jack Broyles and wife Joyce, of Sparta; two nieces; two nephews, two great-nieces; eight great-nephews; and a beloved friend, Jan Dalzell.

Shelby Jolene Dahlgren, 19, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 22, 2008, at her residence.
Dahlgren was born Dec. 29, 1988.
Survivors include her mother, Kathy Lewis; stepfather, Roger Lewis; father, Roy C. Dahlgren; grandparents, J.D. Cribbs, Melody Cribbs, Earlene Cribbs, John Dahlgren and Barbara Dahlgren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Nov. 25, 2008, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Old Glade Creek Cemetery. Elliot Roberts and Doug Benningfield will officiate.

Mary Christine Morford Crabtree

Mary Christine Morford Crabtree, 96, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Sparta, passed away Nov. 20, 2008.
Crabtree was born Aug. 26, 1912, in Sparta, to William and Ollie B. Morford.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sadie Officer; one brother, Cornelius Morford; and one nephew, Melvin Greene.

Local athletes receive honors at Cumberland

   As the fall sports season came to a close at Cumberland University, three former WCHS athletes were among those receiving honors for the completed seasons.
    Todd Holman and Frank Tritico, both 2007 graduates of WCHS and members of the Cumberland football team were named Mid South Conference Scholar Athletes.  Holman carries a 3.66 GPA in business.  Tritico is also in business with a GPA of 3.38. 
    The Cumberland football team finished their season with a 29-26 win over Lambuth earning them a share of the conference’s West Division title.  Holman recovered a fumble and recorded four tackles in that game.  Cumberland finished the season 6-5.

Deborah LaVigne Osborn, 50, of White County, passed away Nov. 22, 2008, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Osborn was born July 19, 1958, in Chicago, to Marianne Burris Osborn and Raymond LaVigne.
She had been an LPT at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Osborn was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Ramie LaVigne; and one sister, Leah LaVigne.

WCMS sixth grade sweeps Warren County

Tying it up. The WCMS sixth grade girls defeated Warren County Thursday night, but the game was not without it’s ties or to be more specific jump balls. There were 27 jump balls in the contest.

    The White County Middle School sixth grade teams swept a pair from visiting Warren County Thursday night.
    The sixth grade Warriorettes jumped to a 12-2 lead after one quarter and held a 20-7 advantage at the end of the first half. WCMS finished with the 24-11 win.

Mary Iva Savage Mason

Mary Iva Savage Mason, 89, of Quebeck, passed away Nov. 23, 2008, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta. 
Mason was born June 26, 1919, in White County, to Clint and Bertha Raper Savage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Denton Mason; one son, Clyde Mason; and granddaughter, Rhonda Mason.
Survivors include two sons, Earl Mason and wife Carolyn, of Quebeck, Roy and Joyce Mason, of Doyle; two daughters, Clata Richardson and husband James, of Sparta, Janie and Burgess Luna, of McMinnville; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Police and fire officials report to aldermen

Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen listened with interest Thursday night as representatives from two of the city’s departments addressed members and presented them with a synopsis of each entity.
As part of a newly implemented program, City of Sparta department heads will be speaking to the board during the two meetings each month. On Thursday, Sparta Fire Chief Ed Kay and Lt. Robert Hall, of the police department, provided an in-depth look at the functions of each division and reported about the newest developments
Kay addressed the matter of emergency warning sirens for City of Sparta, which was initially a project begun in spring of 2008.

Second quarter dooms Warriors

Taking it to the hoop. Warrior senior, Corey Johnson, takes the ball to basket as Coach Eric Mitchell and the Warrior bench look on. WCHS lost to Lenoir City 68-59 and will now look to rebound at Coffee County Tuesday.
