Royce Kirby Henry

Royce Kirby Henry, 74, of Sparta passed away Nov. 14, 2008, at the Life Care of Sparta.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Henry was born Aug. 27, 1934, in White County, to William Floyd and Vallie Void Judd Kirby.
She was a beautician and a member of Bear Cove Baptist Church.
Henry was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J.L. Henry; and one son, Grant Henry.

WCHS basketball season tips off Tuesday

Basketball preview. The Warriors and Warriorettes open their season Tuesday in Hall of Fame games. Check out the online edition of the basketball season preview.

    The White County High School basketball teams open their season Tuesday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium when they host Hall of Fame games.
    The Warriorettes tip things off at 6:30 p.m. against Baylor and the Warriors will follow against Stone Memorial. Season tickets will be honord at the games, but all seats are general admission for Hall of Fame games.

WCHS learns new district fate

    Everyone has known it was coming for a few months now, but the TSSAA Board of Controls made it official Thursday when they realigned athletic districts across the state of Tennessee.
    At least for the next four years, all sports teams at White County High School will compete against the same teams in their district/region.  Since the early 90’s football has been in an entirely different league than the other sports at WCHS.  That will change with the start of the 2009-10 season.

Warrior football team honored with banquet

Award winners. The Warrior football team was honored with a banquet Thursday evening in the high school cafeteria. Team and individual awards were presented. Those receiving individual awards were (l to r): Seth Anderson, Tyler Good, Dalton Bain, Dillon Kay, Zack Saylors, Seth McDonald, Jordan Brown, Aaron Murray, Allen Sullivan, Sam Gribble, Jay Currin, Bryce Pullum, Dailey Hummelt, Sam Howard, Ethan Keiffer, Dustin Howell and Marshall Milton.

    The White County High School football team put the finishing touches on the 2008 season when they were honored by the Quarterback Club with a banquet.

James Louis Wurm

James Louis Wurm, 58, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 16, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Wurm was born Aug. 13, 1950, in Traverse City, Mich., to Ambrose and Emma Seegmiller Wurm.
He was proud to be a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy.

    If one thing is life is constant, it is that things are always going to change. 
    I am sitting here three weeks almost from the exact minute that I got that terrible phone call telling me about Markie.  I was sitting at my computer doing just like I do every Saturday night/Sunday morning working on Monday’s paper.  Sadly, that was one of those phone calls that I will remember the exact words for the rest of my life.  I have had several of those and it never gets any easier.  I remember the exact words from phone calls about Markie, as well as Jeff Griffin and Lindsay Floyd.  … Read More

Jimmy Eugene Parks, 72, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 13, 2008, at his residence.
Parks was born Sept. 4, 1936, in White County, to Bob and Easter Emerton Parks.
He retired from Thomas Industries where he had worked as a mechanic.
Parks was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Johnny Edward Parks, Bobby Lee Parks and Clyde McKinley Parks.

Robert A. (Buddy) Goodwin, 81, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 13, 2008, at NHC Healthcare f Sparta.
Goodwin was born March 21, 1927, in White County, to Marion Dallas and Mary Etta Eldridge Goodwin.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea. Goodwin was retired from Thomas Industries, in Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Treva Lafever Goodwin; second wife, Helen Thompson Goodwin; and four brothers, Roy, Willie, Paul Gene, Duane Goodwin.

Edith Elizabeth Clemons Brown, 85, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 13, 2008, at her residence.
Brown was born Oct. 21, 1923, in White County, to Jesse and Bessie Stults Clemons.
She was a beautician and homemaker for many years and a member of Doyle First Baptist Church.
Brown was preceded in death by her son, David Eugene Brown; sister, Macey Johnson; and brother, Carl Clemons.

School report card released

White County teachers are once again proud of the school system’s success with the release of the 2008 School Report Card from Tennessee Department of Education.
Donny Haley, director of schools, is equally impressed, but is still focused on some problem areas that he said are the primary goals for the educational staff.

Warriorettes have final scrimmage of preseason

Intensity. Warriorette junior, Aubrey Sims, has the look of intensity on her face as she handles the ball against a Livingston defender during Tuesday’s scrimmage.

Practicing for the opener. The Warriors go through practice drills every afternoon in preparation for their season opener. They will host the third annual Warrior Feast Saturday.

   The Warriorette basketball team wrapped up their preseason scrimmages when Livingston visited Roy Sewell Gymnasium Tuesday.

WCMS sixth grade teams continue to roll along

It's a battle in the paint for the basketball in sixth grade action.

The White County Middle School basketball teams continue their romp through the competition during their season.  The two teams added three more wins to their worksheet in the past week. 
The WCMS eighth grade teams opened their season Monday Tullahoma West and came home with a split of the game.  The Warriorettes picked up the opening night win while the Warriors fell to the Bobcats.  The seventh grade teams traveled to Spencer and took a pair of wins.

Kenneth C. Sparks, 55, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 12, 2008, at White County Community Hospital.
Sparks was born Dec. 1, 1952, in White County, to James Burton Sparks and Mary Francolie Dodson Sparks.
Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Wilma Sparks; daughter, Kimberly Ann Randolph and husband Jay; sisters, Lizzie Lee Blinskey, Ella Mae Spears, Linda Gail Harness, Mary Rose Jones; brothers, James Benny Sparks, Hubert Glenn Sparks; grandchildren, Jayla Leeann Randolph, Noah Donald Randolph; special nephew, James Sparks; and a host of family and friends.
