Two juveniles facing charges after chase

Two juveniles were taken into custody on Dec. 16, after they led deputies on a short, high-speed chase in Doyle.
According to a report by Deputy Lanny Wheeler, at approximately 1:13 a.m., he responded to a report of a burglary in progress on Wallace Street, in Doyle. He reportedly came in contact with a maroon Volvo, which matched the description of the suspected vehicle in the break-in.
Wheeler stated as he was turning around to intercept the vehicle, the suspected vehicle reportedly almost hit the patrol car as it went past at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was immediately initiated, but the suspects fled.

Michael Dean Frazier, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2008, at the Cancer Center of American, in Tulsa, Okla.
Frazier was born Dec. 26, 1963, in Sparta, to Harold and Wanda Frazier.
Survivors include his wife, Betty G. Frazier, of Sparta; son, T.K. Frazier, of Sparta; three daughters, Brittney Frazier, Ashlee Frazier, Tabitha Gilreath, all of Sparta; parents, Harold and Wanda Frazier, of Sparta; two sisters, Annette Austin and husband Jimmy, of Sparta, Sheila Eller and husband Mark Evan, of Sparta; three nieces; and one nephew.

Josephine “Terry” Sims, 68, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 19, 2008, at her residence in Cookeville.
Sims and her husband helped bring the Young Life Club to the Upper Cumberland. She was a member of Christ’s Community Church, Monday Bridge Club, Tuesday Bible Study Group, and CBS. She had youth groups and Bible studies throughout her life as opening the word of God to people was her passion.

‘Tis the season for scams

Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth asks that all city and county residents keep their guard up for scams of many types.
Scams can take on many forms, and the chief said everyone is susceptible. Those who attempt scams also come in many forms.
“We need to reiterate to people that, during this time, there’s a lot of scams going on,” said Guth. “If somebody comes to your door and you’re not expecting them and they want to come in to use the bathroom or something like that, tell them just to wait right there and you’ll call somebody that can help them.”

Aggravated robbery filed against Lewis

Indicted. William Dell Lewis Jr. has been charged in a second incident in Putnam County.

A 21-year-old White County man has been arrested a second time in less than one month as he was reportedly charged with aggravated robbery in Cookeville.
William Dell Lewis Jr., of Sparta, was reportedly picked up Dec. 16 on an indictment issued by Putnam County Grand Jury, charging him with the April 25, 2008, robbery of a Mapco convenience store in Cookeville.
Lewis, a 2006 White County High School graduate, was named twice to the All-Region team and was signed to a scholarship by Tennessee Tech.

Giving back to the community. The Warriorettes represent their hometown on the court and in the community. They had their team Christmas party in one of Sparta’s most recognizable places, Oldham’s Theater, and spent the day prior to that out in the community playing Santa Claus.

Teams not off to joyful start in Christmas tournament

Barn and contents lost in flames

A barn on County House Road, owned by Terry Jolley, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday, Dec. 13, as were a pickup truck and equipment that were located in or near the barn.
According to Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Chief Paul McCormick, the fire was already heavily involved when they arrived on the scene
Several departments tried to save the structure including firefighters from Doyle, Hickory Valley and Central View. No one was injured in the incident.


The Expositor Great Turkey Bowl 2008

A great bowling arm and little luck went a long way when Lynn Rains competed in the recent Turkey Bowl, sponsored by The Expositor and Floyd’s Cash Saver Foods. Rains’ wife and six children were all present to give him moral support. The grand prize was a Nintendo Wii. View PHOTOS
