Warriorettes embrace the season of giving

Giving back to the community. The Warriorettes represent their hometown on the court and in the community. They had their team Christmas party in one of Sparta’s most recognizable places, Oldham’s Theater, and spent the day prior to that out in the community playing Santa Claus.

Barn and contents lost in flames

A barn on County House Road, owned by Terry Jolley, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday, Dec. 13, as were a pickup truck and equipment that were located in or near the barn.
According to Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Chief Paul McCormick, the fire was already heavily involved when they arrived on the scene
Several departments tried to save the structure including firefighters from Doyle, Hickory Valley and Central View. No one was injured in the incident.

Mobile home extensively damaged by fire

Firefighters were able to save a mobile home on Three Island Road from completely burning to the ground after a concerned neighbor noticed smoke coming from the structure and called 911 on Monday. Read the complete story on the NEWS page.

Robert Wayne Davidson, 41, of Smithville, passed away Dec. 13, 2008,a t Centennial medical Center, in Nashville.
Survivors include his wife, Candida Davidson, of Smithville; one son, Robert Wayne Davidson Jr., of Smithville; mother, Brenda Lou Higham, of Sparta; father, Asher Davidson, of Sparta; one brother, Steve Davidson and wife Sherry, of Sparta; sister, Priscilla Judkins, of Smithville; brother-in-law, Tony Culwell and wife Lori and family, all of Smithville; aunts, uncles; nieces; nephews; and many friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Dec. 17, 2008, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Bonham Cemetery, in DeKalb County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Oak

Charles Ishmel Alderman

Charles Ishmel Alderman, 53, of Murfreesboro, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 15, 2008, at Veterans Administration Hospital, in Murfreesboro.
Alderman was born Nov. 30, 1955, in Harlen, Ky., to Charles Dale Alderman and Edna Clarice Lewis Alderman.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.
Alderman was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gail Gilley.
Survivors include his son, Charles Ian Alderman, of Alabama; three sisters, Edna Dille, of Sparta, Judy Wood, of Crossville, Debby Boone, of Murfreesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lifesaving skills that cost several thousand dollars for training and certification are ranked at a pay scale that is close to the same level as that of several mid-level administrative positions in the county government.
White County’s paramedics are paid $14.70 per hour, which totals to $30,576 annually. Some of these individuals have been working in these positions more than two decades.

School tests show positive results

At its December meeting, the White County School Board heard a report from Sandra Crouch about test scores for grades six through 12 as well as graduation rates and their computation.
According to Crouch, test scores show steady, positive improvement over the last three years in every subject matter. Crouch explained that, although the results are positive, the White County school system is looking forward and recognizing the challenges that still lie ahead.

Attempted murder charges filed

Serious charges. Tracy Darren Grissom, of White County, is facing several charges following an incident on Wednesday evening at a residence on Verna Qualls Road.

A White County man was arrested at an apartment in Van Buren County on Thursday afternoon after being charged with attempted murder on a police officer for an incident on Verna Qualls Road that occurred Wednesday evening.
According to Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, officers with White County Sheriff Department worked in conjunction with Federal Marshals to capture Tracy Darren Grissom, 39, on felony warrants.
