Cookeville notches rivalry sweep

    Two rivalry games.  Two large first half leads disappear.  One team holds on for the win while the second lets victory slip away.
    In the battle between two of District 7AAA’s oldest rivals, Cookeville was able to take wins in two different kinds of comeback games.
    The Lady Cavs led the Warriorettes by as many as 17 in the girls’ contest only to see the WCHS team make a furious comeback.  The Warriorettes got to within two in the fourth quarter, but Cookeville sealed the 55-50 win going five of six from the free throw line in the final minute of the contest.

Lena Mae Farris

Lena Mae Farris, 83, of Cookeville, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, at Master’s Healthcare Center.
Farris was born Feb. 7, 1925, in Putnam County, to Johnnie Estil and Gladys Fitzpatrick Wright.
She was a member of Northeast Church of Christ.
Together with her husband, children and daughter-in-law, Farris operated many restaurants at the Algood Stockyard and the Plateau Livestock Exchange, in Crossville, for many years.
Prior to establishing her own bookkeeping and tax preparation service, she managed the H&R Block office, in Sparta. She enjoyed farming, horseback riding, cooking, sewing and quilting.
Her greatest interest was genealogy, and she traced her ancestors and her husband’s ancestors back to … Read More

18-wheeler crash disrupts traffic for two hours

Traffic on Crossville Highway, just west of Sunset Rock, was disrupted for more than two hours, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, after the driver of an 18-wheeler lost control and slammed into an embankment.

Jesse Cole, 66, of Livingston, formerly of Sparta, passed away Jan. 30, 2009, at St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville.
Cole was born July 6, 1942, in White County, to Monroe and Pansy Lee Elrod Cole.
He had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Cole was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Joyce Young and Bessie Vinson.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Tindle Cole, of Cookeville; daughters, Lee George and husband Aldie, of Mt. Deputies respond to more than 500 false alarms

False burglar alarm calls have been steadily growing for White County Sheriff Department as reported negligence and lack of proper settings are causing deputies to respond to remote areas of the county when they could possibly be needed for a real emergency several miles away.
Many counties in Tennessee, as well as numerous municipalities, have implemented ordinances that set a fee for false alarm calls. Several of those researched for this story were set at $50 per false call.

Mary Ann McCormick Cooper

Mary Ann McCormick Cooper, 96, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 30, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Cooper was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Algood, to John Calvin and Nellie Hudgens McCormick.
She was an active member of Central Church of Christ. Cooper was a retired teacher in the White County school system and had taught at BonDeCroft, Doyle and Findlay. She also served as a substitute teacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Winstead Daniel Cooper whom she married in April 1936; brother, Frank McCormick; and sister, Christine McCormick Ferrell.

Bumbalough was born March 5, 1972, to Danny Stephen Price and Loretta Raines Worthington.
She had been a homemaker.

Weather conditions continue to affect drivers

According to TDOT, caution is the best preventative in avoiding accidents during the current ice storms crossing the state. They remind motorists that, when there’s ice and snow, take it slow – slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering and slower braking.
“You can’t do anything with ice,” said White County Highway Superintendent Robert Weaver Weaver. “Salt won’t work under 22 degrees. If you’ve got black ice, you’ve got problems.”
There are two types of melting agents used by highway departments – salt and brine. And the type used depends on several issues including the cost and the kind of weather in a particular area.

WCHS sweeps neighbors on the hardwood

Ball fake. Lacy Yslas uses a ball fake before going up over a Warren County defender for two of her game-high 23 points in the 19th win of the season for the Warriorettes. The Warriorettes won the game 73-48 over the Lady Pioneers. WCHS plays host to Cookeville Friday night.

Going for the swat. Corey Johnson gets up high to try and block a Warren County shot in the first half of Tuesday’s 73-64 win over the Pioneers. Johnson led the Warriors with 24 points in the victory.

Comebacks dominate freshman hoops action

Back up with it. Warrior freshman, Travis Howard, gets ready to go back up with the ball after getting an offensive rebound in Monday’s game against Riverdale. The Warriors lost an 11 point lead and were defeated 46-42 by the visiting Warriors. In an exact opposite outcome, the Warriorettes overcame an 11-point lead to take a 62-51 win.

Take a deep breath! WCHS swimmer, D.J. Cunningham, takes a breath after completing his 50 meter swim in the first-ever swim meet that WCHS competed. The WCHS swimmers competed Saturday against Cookeville at the Putnam County YMCA. WCHS plans to compete in a full schedule next season. Cunningham had the best overall time in the 50-meter freestyle race.
