Lorene Vinson England, 85, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 10, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
England was born Sept. 5, 1923, in White County, to Guster Vinson and Maude Rice Vinson.    
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 50 years, Paul England; brothers, Jack Vinson, Jim Vinson; and sisters, Pauline Daniels and Wilma Clark.
Survivors include her loving children, Doris Walker and husband Kenneth, of Sparta, Shirley Kerkvliet and husband Lee, of Madison, Harold England and wife Teresa, of Cookeville, Kenny England and wife Diane, of Sparta; sisters, Sue Bray, of Sparta, Ima Golden, of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Penny Copeland, Cindy LaFever, Gregory … Read More

Antonio Datwain, 78, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 9, 2009, at his residence.

Gregory L. Jones

Gregory Lee Jones, age 45, of Sparta passed away Feb. 8, 2009, at his residence.
Jones was born Aug. 1, 1963, in White County to Clayton and Evelyn Louise Graham Jones.  
He was a factory worker.
Survivors include his parents, Clayton and Evelyn Jones of Sparta; sisters, Patsey Young and husband Kenneth, Kathy Dodson and husband Mike, all of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Feb., 12, 2009, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m., Feb. 11, at the funeral home.  Joe England will officiate.

It’s now time for another walk down memory lane, because I want everyone who reads this column to understand the importance of what I am about to say.
As a city girl, I have countless fond memories of downtown Sparta. I lived only a few blocks from the center of this wonderful little town. That was back during a time when life seemed much simpler and every store that graced “The Million Dollar Mile” held treasures galore.

During World War II, Americans were encouraged to convert their backyards into Victory Gardens to contribute to the war effort. The gardens also saved families money, something that was not abundant to most at the time. $600k needed by Middle TN YMCA to take over facility

Expanse. The back portion of the YMCA property is sectioned off into ballfields used by Little League teams, which could change if Middle Tennesse YMCA takes over the Sparta-White County facility.

The goal is 1,100 members and more than a half-million dollars in donations for Middle Tennessee YMCA to take over the struggling Sparta organization that has been receiving the majority of its funding from the two governmental entities.

Mildred Irene Tackett Powers, 77, of Murfreesboro, passed away Feb. 8, 2009, at her residence.
Powers was born July 26, 1931, in White County, to David and Joe Mae Crawford Tackett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Bertha Elllis, Maggie Smith; and two brothers, Herbert Tackett and David Tackett Jr.

Barbara Jean Pickering, 59, of Gainesboro, passed away Feb. 7, 2009, at her residence.
Pickering was born Jan. 29, 1950, in Arizona, to James and Jeanette Simmons.
She had been a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith
