Warriors lose lead and game at Riverdale

Record breaking performance. The Warriors lost a double digit lead and were defeated by Riverdale Tuesday. However, in the loss, Corey Johnson set a new school record for most threes in a game. The senior guard hit eight shots outside the arc on the way to a career high 31 points. WCHS hosts Blackman Friday for senior night and the regular season finale.

Suspect sought in attempted bank robbery

A man wearing a makeshift mask attempted to rob First National Bank in Sparta on Thursday.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, a short, stocky white male wearing a grey sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots entered the bank, at approximately 8 a.m., wearing a mask fashioned out of a plastic bag with holes made for his eyes.
Guth stated the man appeared to be armed with a knife. He reportedly approached a teller’s window and demanded money.
“He actually jumped up on the teller’s window on his knees,” said Guth. “And I don’t know why; but he just jumped down and left. He didn’t get any money.”… Read More


Attempted murder charges facing Sparta man

Aaron Winton

Aaron Winton, of Sparta, was charged Tuesday with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and theft of property after allegedly attacking a man in the White County Library parking lot Sunday evening.
According to the arrest warrant, Nathan Hunter, of Sparta, filed a report with Sparta Police Department, at approximately 8:39 p.m. Sunday, stating he had been assaulted. He alleged he had an altercation with Winton over some money.
Hunter reportedly told police he had received a text message implying money would be returned to him and asking him to meet at a location that ended up being the library parking lot.

Antonio Rosario Datuin, 78, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 9, 2009, at his residence.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Feb. 13, 2009, at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Father Fred Schmit, SDS, will officiate. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Feb. 12, at the church.

Black History Month Celebration

Sparta Civic Center was filled with people from all walks of life and all races as they came together with one common goal – to celebrate Black History Month. The Saturday event focused on the history of African-Americans, as well as the outlook for the future under the guidance of the first black president, Barack Obama. Herman Hill, American Legion commander and organizer of the event, provided those who gathered with a line-up of inspirational and motivating entertainment, which was presented by several choirs from the surrounding area and out-of-state.


Mass dog-breeding operation raided

Officers with White County Sheriff Department, working in conjunction with District Attorney Randy York, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society on an investigation that began almost two years ago, took custody, on Wednesday, of an estimated 275 dogs from a residence on Lost Creek Road. Riverdale takes two from White County

    The White County High School basketball teams dropped a pair of District 7AAA games at Riverdale Tuesday.
    The Warriorettes fell to 7-6 in the district and 20-7 overall with the 53-40 loss to the Lady Warriors of Riverdale.  Ashley Page led the Warriorettes, who never led in the contest, with 12 points.  WCHS was within five with two minutes to play, but Riverdale finished out with an 11-3 run to seal the victory.

Lorene Vinson England, 85, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 10, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
England was born Sept. 5, 1923, in White County, to Guster Vinson and Maude Rice Vinson.    
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 50 years, Paul England; brothers, Jack Vinson, Jim Vinson; and sisters, Pauline Daniels and Wilma Clark.

Gregory Lee Jones, age 45, of Sparta passed away Feb. 8, 2009, at his residence.
Jones was born Aug. 1, 1963, in White County to Clayton and Evelyn Louise Graham Jones.  
He was a factory worker.
Survivors include his parents, Clayton and Evelyn Jones of Sparta; sisters, Patsey Young and husband Kenneth, Kathy Dodson and husband Mike, all of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Feb., 12, 2009, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m., Feb. 11, at the funeral home.  Joe England will officiate.

It’s now time for another walk down memory lane, because I want everyone who reads this column to understand the importance of what I am about to say.
As a city girl, I have countless fond memories of downtown Sparta. I lived only a few blocks from the center of this wonderful little town. That was back during a time when life seemed much simpler and every store that graced “The Million Dollar Mile” held treasures galore.
