Spring beauty starts now

    March, its lavish display of daffodils, azaleas, dogwood and other flowering shrubs, is one of the most beautiful months of the year – and the busiest. There is still time to start your own seeds indoors. Star zinnias and marigolds, but keep them in pots to be put in the ground the first of April.

Fire being investigated

Twice burned. This mobile home on Sullivan Knowles Road was destroyed by fire on Wednesday despite the efforts of firefighters from Mt. Gilead and Cassville volunteer fire departments.

Firefighters were dispatched on two consecutive days to an uninhabited mobile home at 118 Sullivan Knowles Road, but were unable to save the structure as it was destroyed by fire on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Detective David Ward with White County Sheriff Department, the mobile home in which no one was living first caught fire on Feb. 24. Firefighters put out that fire.
On Feb. 25, firefighters were called back to the residence. This time it was destroyed.

Tennessee unemployment rate increases

Tennessee is continuing to experience the results of a struggling economy as unemployment rates rose in January, with county-by-county figures to be released Thursday.
Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development released the overall state results last week. The unemployment rate for January 2009 was 8.6 percent, which was up 1 percent from the revised December 2008 rate of 7.6 percent. The unemployment rate in Tennessee for January 2008 was 5.3 percent.
The national unemployment rate for January 2009 was 7.6 percent, which was an increase of .04 percent from December 2008.

Edward (Tobe) M. Jernigan

Edward (Tobe) M. Jernigan, 85, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 28, 2009, at Life Care Center of Columbia.
Jernigan was born Sept. 22, 1923, in White County, to Ed and Ester Martin Jernigan.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Gum Springs Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon. He had also been a farmer.
Jernigan was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Virgil (Buck) Jernigan, Addis Mae Denton, Charles Leaton Jernigan, Dola Vean Cooper.

Diamond Warriors feature solid senior class

Providing the leadership. The Warrior baseball team returns seven seniors who logged a lot of playing time last season and should be the catalyst for the 2009 season. Seniors members of the team include (l to r): Bryan Holland, Dalton Bain, Zach Jolly, Roggie Haston, Seth McDonald, Joseph Johnson and Jordan Brown. WCHS opens the season at Upperman before returning home to host Livingston on March 10th.

Betty Sapp Bohannon

Betty Sapp Bohannon,  66, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 28, 2009 at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Bohannon was born July 14, 1942, in White County, to Homer Floyd and Minnie Mitchell Sapp.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Helen Aneva Sapp; and two brothers Casto Cummings and Floyd Mitchell Sapp.
She was a White County Commissioner and a member of Sparta First United Methodist Church.
