White County Clean Sweep 2009

Again this year, the White County Litter Program is sponsoring White County Clean Sweep 2009. We are continually collecting trash along our roadsides. But as usual, we have a lot of people who throw out trash and allow things to blow from their vehicles that are not properly secured.
We are going to have a special cleanup through April 24. White County is asking for all concerned citizens, business and industries, Adopt-A-Highway organizations, schools, and anyone else interested in keeping White County beautiful.

County executive wants clarification

A controversy that began last week during Steering Committee B about a 1997 resolution that eliminated out-of-county garbage at the landfill continued Monday night during the Board of Commissioners meeting.
“I need clarification on who I can help and who I can’t,” said White County Executive Sullivan.
Sullivan presented a resolution to commissioners that stated, “Whereas, it is the wishes of the White County Commission that White County will not, in the future, help out any neighboring county in ANY emergency situation…”

WCHS tennis splits with Lebanon

William Thomas (Tommy) Glenn

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

William Thomas (Tommy) Glenn, 74, of Cookeville, formerly of Sparta, passed away April 21, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Glenn was born Oct. 26, 1934, in Sparta, to Franszola Glenn.
He was a graduate of Tennessee State University, principal of Wallace-Smith School and taught school in St. Louis, Mo., for many years.
Mr. Glenn was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for many years at Abel Gardens in Cookeville, as a floral designer. He was a member of Kynett Methodist Church.

Warrior baseball hosts Cookeville today

Mother Nature again figured into spring sports on Monday.
The Warrior baseball team had to adjust their schedule and, as a result, will play host to archrival, Cookeville, today at 5:30 p.m. The teams will square off in Cookeville on Thursday at the same time.
The Warrior soccer team defeated Bledsoe County 6-1 on Tuesday. The tennis team played host to Lebanon and split with the Warriors taking the 4-3 victory and the Warriorettes falling 6-1.
The Warriorette softball team was defeated 11-1 at Warren County. The two will square off today in Sparta. The junior varsity game is slated for a 5 p.m. start with the varsity … Read More


Reverse-911 calls to be used for weather warnings

White County’s reverse-911 phone call system will soon be utilized to help warn residents of impending danger from severe weather situations.
The service has been used two times recently to warn citizens of dangerous situations involving criminals or criminal activity in specific areas of the county.
Sheriff Oddie Shoupe is planning on doing the same during weather emergencies to help the county’s residents.
“We feel here at the White County Sheriff’s office that we have an obligation to get them notified some way – to get them out of harms way,” said Shoupe. “We’re going to use every means possible to take care of the residents here.”

Robert Snyder McCoy

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Robert Snyder McCoy, 86, of Sparta, passed away April 20, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. McCoy was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Rainelle, Va., to Edward Clarence and Arista Crookshanks McCoy.
Mr. McCoy was a graduate of American University, in Washington D.C., and attended graduate school at UCLA. He was a U.S. Army sergeant during World War II and was stationed in Europe. Mr. McCoy was also vice president of CAL Corp.
