Warrior football hits the field for official practice

The White County High School football team hit the field bright and early Monday morning to begin official practice for the 2009 season.

Mary Kate Davis, 98, of Spring Harbor, Mich., formerly of Nashville and a native of the Old Zion community in White County, passed away July 26, 2009, in Spring Harbor.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, Frank A. Stewart and Iona Mires Stewart.
Survivors include her daughter, Charlotte Kirkner, of Spring Harbor, Mich.; grandson, Dr. Stephen Kirkner, of Brighton, Mich.; son, Jerry R. Davis and wife Kathryn, of Mooresville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m., July 29, 2009, at Old Zion Cemetery.

Juanita Gilliam, 89, of Sparta, passed away July 29, 2009, at White County Community Hospital.
Survivors include brothers and sisters, Loretta Sparks, W.H. Luna, Alma Cleo Farley, Sue Qualls, Ruth Simmons, Amerce Luna; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephew; and great-great-nieces and great-great nephews.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., July 31, 2009, at Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in New Bon Air Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., July 30, at the funeral home.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


South Young Market robbed again

South Young Street Market was robbed at gunpoint, July 28, at approximately 7:52 p.m., and two men have been arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest.
This was the second time in two months the store has been the target of crime. Another robbery took place May 26, 2009.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Cameron Shawn Green, 19, of Sparta, and Paul David Fuller, 23, of Oak Ridge, are being held at White County Justice Center for their alleged involvement in the most recent robbery.… Read More

Brian Lee Conley, 30, passed away July 23, 2009, at his residence, in Graysville.

Mr. Conley was born May 12, 1979, in Putnam County, to Michael Parks and Kimberly Conley.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Kimberley Conley Parks, of Quebeck; half brothers, Bobby Michael Parks, Johnny Edward Parks, Bruce Lee Parks, all of Sparta; grandparents, Fred and Mearline Dodson, of Quebeck; aunts, Cathy Lance, of Crossville, Elaine Qualls, of Sparta, Mary Mendoza, of Spencer, Lisa Lytle, of McMinnville, Janie Whitman, of Quebeck; children, Ruby, Douglas, Sara Elizabeth; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive; and girlfriend, Christy Thomas, of Graysville.

Mr. Francis Meagher

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Mr. Francis Meagher, 73, of Sparta, passed away July 24, 2009, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Meagher as born Aug. 18, 1935, in Frostburg, Md., to Francis Meagher and Vivian Engels Meagher.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He had worked as an over-the-road truck driver for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Meagher, of Sparta; son, Michael Meagher, of Pennsylvania; daughter, Patricia Meagher, of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Trevor, Taylor, Rio, Michael, Cheyenne; sister, Deborah Stewart, of Maryland; and five step-children.

QB Club BBQ and Auction on tap this Saturday

The senior members of the Warrior football team show off many items that will be auctioned off by Terry Whitson at Saturday night’s Quarterback Club BBQ and Auction that will be held in the WCHS cafeteria. Included in the items to be auctioned off is the maroon Dodge Caravan in the background donated by Federal Mogul. WCHS golf season begins today

Teeing off. The 2009 WCHS golf season tees off today. Ashley Sherrell is the lone senior on the squad. The 11 remaining golfers on the team are in the freshman and sophomore class.

As the other high school fall sports begin official preseason practice today, the golf teams across the state can start their official 2009 campaigns.
Official team golf practice could begin on July 13th. Even though that was the official start for high school practice, several of the WCHS golfers have spent quite a bit of time on the links this summer either practicing or playing in various tournaments as individuals.

Puckett headed to Sewanee

Sewanee bound. Aaron Puckett, a 2009 graduate of WCHS, will head to Sewanee at the end of August to continue his education and play basketball.

Playing sports in college was just kind of something that everyone thought Aaron Puckett would do from the time he was old enough to start dribbling a basketball.

Mr. Sullivan was born April 24, 1931, in Van Buren County, to Braddie Sullivan Sr. and Audrey Lawson Sullivan.
