Cross country has good day at jamboree

The 2009 WCHS cross country team had their first outing Tuesday in a jamboree at Cookeville.
Although the meet is not an official event, Coach Stephanie Naaktgeboren was excited about her team’s efforts heading into their season opening meet at Macon County this weekend.
Naaktgeboren commented, “I am extremely proud of my team tonight. They all did excellent and I can’t wait to see how they do on Saturday at Macon County. We’ll have a full girls’ team on Saturday and I can’t wait to see their times and team score. I am anticipating a good season for the girls and hopefully a great season for the guys. … Read More

Reservoir. This 100-acre lake serves as the reservoir for BonDeCroft Utility District’s water treatment plant.

BonDeCroft Utility District representatives are attempting to douse the fires of disagreement among customers that have stemmed from a recent increase in their water bills.
An Aug. 17, 2009, meeting of the BonDeCroft Utility Board of Directors brought out numerous residents from the service area who expressed their discontent with the added costs.
BonDeCroft Utility recently completed its new water treatment plant, which was described by John E. Hall, of Tennessee Association of Utility Districts, as the finest in the Upper Cumberland.

State health officials are providing words of advice to all segments of the population about two important flu vaccines that will be available and who should be at the front of the lines to receive these shots.
Dr. Kelly Moore, with Tennessee Department of Health and medical director of the state’s immunization program, said the seasonal flu vaccine is beginning to arrive in doctors’ offices and clinics.

Mark and Merritt Voyles said they have been living in a nightmare for the past 10 months since their 17-year-old daughter was killed in a crash, with their grief compounded by what they feel is a light jail sentence for the driver who was charged in the high school track star’s death.
On Oct. 25, 2008, Markie Voyles, 17, died in a one-vehicle crash, on Bunker Hill Road, in White County. The driver of the pick-up truck, Travis Young, who was 18 at the time of the crash, was eventually charged with five separate counts, three of which were specifically alcohol-related.

Aggravating kidnapping charges filed

A Sparta man has been arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated kidnapping for reportedly forcing his girlfriend and her three juvenile children to return to their home at gunpoint, on Aug. 14, after a domestic argument escalated.
According to a report by Deputy Nathan Blaylock with White County Sheriff Department, Jamaine Lamar Lemons, 30, of Sparta, and his girlfriend, Jessica Deeann Stafford, 31, of Sparta, got into a fight that caused her to leave the residence with her children and go to her father’s home.

Mary Evelyn Russell, 72, of Rock Island, passed away Aug. 24, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Russell was born Nov. 19, 1936, in Van Buren County, to Thomas Mayes and Minnie Shockley
She was a member of a Church of Christ and had retired from Oster Corporation.
Ms. Russell was preceded in death by her parents.

Elsa Ranee Shackles, 5, passed away Aug. 19, 2009, at Sara Bush Lincoln Health Care Center, in Mattoon, Ill.
Elsa Renee was born March 13, 2004, in Champaign, Ill., to William Brian Shackles and Melissa Ranee Nash Shackles.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Sherman F. Lake and Darrell Shackles.
Survivors include her mother, Melissa Shackles, of Mattoon, Ill.; father, William Brian Shackles, of Mattoon, Ill.; grandmothers, Pat Lake, of Walling, Cleta Shackles, of Mattoon, Ill.; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Richard Whitelaw Briscoe

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Richard Whitelaw Briscoe, 87, of Sparta, passed away at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Briscoe was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Lanton, Mich., to W.F. and Mary Alice Thompson Briscoe.
He was a lieutenant in World War II and a pilot for Air Transport Command of U.S. Army Air Corps and flew missions out of North Africa.
After the war, Mr. Briscoe owned several small businesses in West Plains, Mo. He became co-owner of a national fundraising company based in Kansas City, Mo. For the last 16 years of his career he was the director of administration and finance … Read More

Quebeck Post Office could cease operation

Unknown. Quebeck Post Office, which has been a focal point of activity and service for several decades, may be closed down by U.S. Postal authorities.

A community landmark that has long served as the postal service for the Quebeck community may be on a list designated for closure in the near future.
