Warriors drop season opener

It takes the whole team to bring him down. Aaron Murray carries a whole host of Franklin County defenders with him on this run. Murray picked up 139 yards rushing in the contest, but the Warriors were defeated 34-6 by the Rebels. WCHS hosts Campbell County this Friday.

First step in rebuilding. The WCHS coaching staff talks to the Warriors at the end of Friday’s loss to Franklin County. WCHS goes back to work today getting ready for Campbell County.

Let the games begin

While football and golf season has already started, the rest of the fall sports teams at WCHS officially get their seasons underway this week.
The TSSAA officially set the first day of fall sports competition as Monday, August 24th. There were only two exceptions. Golf season officially began on July 27th and, despite two rainouts this past week against Coffee County, the WCHS golfers have been in action quite a bit. Football teams can be granted permission to play what is called a Week 0 game, which is what the Warriors did Friday night against Franklin County.

Residents upset about rate increase

Storm brewing. A large group of residents surround the BonDeCroft Utility District’s commissioners as they try to get answers to questions about the district’s operations, spurred by a recent increase in water rates.

The BonDeCroft Utility District Board of Commissioners’ Aug. 17 meeting was moved to the lawn at the district’s office to accommodate the large group of residents who gathered to voice concerns about the recent increase of water rates charged to customers.
The residents were upset that the rates had been raised and had a multitude of questions about many aspects of the water district’s operation.

Quebeck Post Office could cease operation

Unknown. Quebeck Post Office, which has been a focal point of activity and service for several decades, may be closed down by U.S. Postal authorities.

A community landmark that has long served as the postal service for the Quebeck community may be on a list designated for closure in the near future.

Football season

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before, but I love this time of year, especially from Friday nights through Monday nights.
Well at least once all the football seasons swing into action; it’s a great time of year if you are a true football fan.
For me, it starts on Friday nights with high school football games. There is so much pageantry and tradition associated with football at the high school, college and professional level.
What other sport has tailgate parties before every game? From Friday nights at high schools to Saturdays at any college game and then on to Sundays at NFL stadiums across the country.

Baked Chicken Nuggets

3 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
One-half cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon dried basil
One-half cup margarine
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut chicken breast into one and one-half inch pieces.
In a bowl, mix the bread crumbs, cheese, salt, thyme and basil. Melt the margarine. Dip the chicken nuggets into the margarine, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Place the chicken on a lightly greased cookie sheet in a single layer and bake for 20 minutes. The length of time varies with ovens and they will burn easily.

City sets meeting with E-911 Board

Two Sparta aldermen cast nay votes on the budget during Thursday’s board meeting because of the unsettled issue of funding for White County E-911.
During the Aug. 6 meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, members voted to table voting on the budget until a meeting could be set with E-911 Board of Directors. A meeting of the entire city board and E-911 Board members had not been scheduled to-date.

Making a stop. Three Warrior defenders team up to bring down a Franklin County receiver after a short gain. The Rebels, however, won the game 34-6.

The Warriors opened the 2009 season Friday night at home against Franklin County and were defeated 34-6.
Rebel tailback, Terrance Martin, was as advertised carrying the ball 18 times for 249 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
The Warriors got their own solid rushing performance from senior Aaron Murray, who toted the ball 26 times for 139 yards and scored the lone WCHS touchdown of the game.

Doris Fay Pugsley, 73, of McMinnville, passed away Aug. 19, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Ms. Pugsley was born Dec. 27, 1935, in White County, to Fred and Irene Pirtle Kirkpatrick.
She was a retired elevator operator.
Ms. Pugsley was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Michael and William Pugsley; and three brothers, Eugene, Barney and Donald Kirkpatrick.
Survivors include her two grandchildren, Jillian and Matthew Pugsley; sisters, Dimple Qualls, of Sparta, Maggie Proxmire, of Anaheim, Calif.; and brother, Fred Kirkpatrick Jr., of Sparta.

Mrs. Fendal Gae Lee, 61, of Spencer, passed away June 27, 1948, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Aug. 23, 2009, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Shockley Cemetery, in Spencer. The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m., Aug. 21; 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Aug. 22; and 8 a.m. until time for the service, on Aug. 23.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
