Opal Loretta Hull Savage, 1917-2009

Opal Loretta Hull Savage, 92, of Doyle, passed away Sept. 29, 2009, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Savage was born July 22, 1917, in Clay County, to Hiram Edgar (Ed) and Menta Frances Bilbrey Hull.
She was a retired factory worker.
Mrs. Savage was preceded in death by her husband, David Jonathan Savage; her grandson, Tim Mason; son-in-law, Alklen Lee mason; and bother-in-law, Ridley (Sonny) Ray.
Survivors include her daughters, Davina Mason, fo Quebeck, Sharon Kay Turner and husband Tommy, of Livingston; son, Jonathan Savage and wife Sherry, of Sparta; sister, Evelyn Ray, of Hendersonville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and … Read More

Randy Lynn Nash, 53, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 30, 2009, at Wyndridge Health & Rehabilitation Center, in Crossville.
Mr. Nash was born April 26, 1956, in White County, to James Robert and Pearl Louise Lewis Nash.
He had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had been a truck driver.
Mr. Nash was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Danny Michael Nash.

Donald Edward (Don Eddie) White, 55, of White County, passed away Sept. 29, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. White was born Nov. 6, 1953, in Warren County, to Curtis and Mary Reeves White.
He had worked for Emerson Controls.
Mr. White was preceded in death by his father, Curtis White; grandfather, Charlie Reeves; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lester and Nellie Mae Broom; lifelong friend, Jeff Cantrell; sister-in-law, Jeanette Bryant; and niece, Sherry Broom.

Tennessee tax revenue still on decline

Sales tax collections for Tennessee are still faltering in the negative category, with 18 of the last 20 months recording numbers below budgeted estimates.
White County is only one of a many counties that is experiencing a decline in tax collections that are sent to the state.
In August 2007, White County’s local sales tax collections were $307,888. By August 2008, they had dropped to $296,015. In August 2009, the figure was $285,434.
In August 2007, state sales tax collections were $1,252,895. By August 2008, that number had dropped to $1,090,535. In August 2009, the figure dropped again to $1,046,925.

State 911 Board extends ‘olive branch’

Motion passes. Officials with White County E-911 face the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board at a recent meeting to discuss funding issues involving White County and the City of Sparta.

Tennessee Emergency Communications Board approved a motion at its Sept. 24 meeting to give White County E-911 Board, City of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen and White County Commission until Nov. 19 to resolve the funding issue between the three entities or a current source of revenue will be reduced.
The controversy revolves around extending a rate increase on landline phones, which was first implemented in 2001. The rate increase, which has given additional money to White County … Read More


WCMS football wins another close one

Putting up points. Blake Lynn ran his touchdown total for the year to 11 with two scores in the 14-12 middle school win over Livingston Thursday. The Jr. Warriors are now 5-1 and will host Coffee County for homecoming Tuesday.

The White County Middle School football team has definitely kept their fans on the edge of their seats this season.

White County at 14.5 percent unemployment

Jobless figures for White County dropped a fraction of a point in the numbers released last week by Tennessee Department of Labor.
White County is sitting at 14.5 percent unemployed for August 2009, which is down from the 14.9 percent registered for July 2009.
Since January 2009, White County was listed twice in the top 10 of highest unemployment. In April 2009 the rate was 15.2 percent. By May 2009, the number had climbed to 15.6 percent. White County now ranks 14th our of 95 counties for the highest unemployment

Mixed Berry Muffins

1 cup milk
One-half cup butter, melted
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup frozen mixed berries, thawed
One-half cup white chocolate chips
Heat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl combine milk, butter and egg. Stir in the remaining ingredients except for the berries. Strawberries may need to be cut in two or three pieces. Drain berries. Fold in the berries and chips. Spoon into greased muffin pan. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until brown. Makes 18-24 medium sized muffins.


WCHS soccer ends in another tie

Sandwiched. Shelby O’Neal is sandwiched in by a pair of Coffee County players during Thursday’s game. O’Neal scored the Warriorette goal in the contest that ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Warriorette soccer team played host to Coffee County Thursday in District 6AAA action with good news and bad news coming from the game.
