Sparta investigators help convict counterfeit ring

This photo shows the mounds of evidence Sparta Police are now able to share with The Expositor after the conviction of McWhorter, including counterfeit payroll checks and IRS check, as well as fake driver licenses.

United States Attorney for the Middle Tennessee District of Tennessee, Edward M. Yarbrough, announced Nov. 20 that a federal jury convicted James Christopher McWhorter, 30, of Antioch, Tennessee on a five count indictment, stemming from a multi-jurisdictional investigation including Sparta Police into a counterfeit check-cashing ring.

Caramel Apple Salad

3 cups apples, peeled and finely chopped
1 can crushed pineapple (not drained)
1 box sugar-free butterscotch pudding (instant)
1-12 oz. Cool Whip topping
Mix throughly the pudding and crushed pineapple. Add apples, folding until all coated. Fold topping into mixture until coated. Place in serving dish and refrigerate until serving.

Warriors and Warriorettes split games on Saturday

After taking wins over both opponents on Friday in the King of the Mountain Classic, the WCHS basketball teams split their final games of the weekend.
Behind the 17 points of Jessica Wilson, the Warriorettes improved to 4-1 on the season with a 45-33 win over Monterey on Saturday.  The Warriorettes led only 26-22 at the half and 33-28 going into the fourth, but pulled away for the double-digit victory in the fourth quarter.

Foster children to benefit from donations

Members of Confederate Sons Association and volunteers are accepting donations for Christmas gifts for foster children.

The Confederate Sons Association is asking for White Countians to join in their efforts for “Gathering of the Gifts.”
White County members of the organization are gathering gifts for a specific segment of children who are in foster care. There are approximately 20 children in this group. Many of these children will not otherwise receive gifts.
The children age range is birth through 17 years old. The birth through 14-year-olds is a mixture of boys and girls. The 15-17-year-olds are girls.

Sparta’s merchants are gearing up for their Christmas extravaganza that will provide shoppers with an opportunity for some bargains prices, along with a chance to win great prizes and be entertained by some of White County’s talented residents.

Christmas parade Dec. 12

These young parade participants were having a great time during last year’s Sparta Rotary Christmas Parade. This year’s event will begin at 4 p.m., Dec. 12.

Sparta Rotary Club is preparing for its annual Christmas parade that is the premier holiday event marking the first official visit of the season for Santa Claus.

Ohio man injured in hit and run

Although the seatbelts and airbags worked as designed, the driver of this vehicle suffered cuts to his face and upper body when windows of the van were shattered after being struck by a semi, which left the scene.

An Ohio man, traveling with his family for the holidays, was injured on Crossville Highway, Nov. 24, after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a yellow-colored tractor-trailer, which left the scene.

Hayden Bumbalough, 1931-2009

Hayden Bumbalough, 78, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 25, 209, at Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mr. Bumbalough was born July 3, 1931, in White County, to Perry Bumbalough and Leoria Robinson Bumbalough.
He was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed his carpenter work, friends and family.
Mr. Bumbalough was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Hazel Lack, Jo Marie Lollar, Louetta Burton; and brother, Dewey Bumbalough.

WCHS teams both pick up wins on Friday

The White County HIgh School basketball teams picked up a pair of wins Friday in the King of the Mountain Classic at Stone Memorial.
The Warriorettes outscored Science Hill in only one quarter of the contest, but it was enough for the 53-51 victory.
WCHS trailed 23-20 at the half, but outscored the Hill Toppers 13-5 in the third period. Science Hill won the fourth quarter 23-20, but the Warriorettes were able to hold them off for the win.
Jessica Wilson led a trio of Warriorettes in double figures with 13 points. Kristin Jones added 12 and Tasha Delaney chipped in with 10.

Due to the holidays and so our press department can enjoy the holidays, the deadlines are different for the next two papers. What you are reading in today’s paper was printed during the day Tuesday. That is why Tuesday night’s basketball games are not included in today’s paper. They will be in Monday’s paper, but the games from the weekend won’t be included.
