Swim team dives into first complete season of competition

White County High School has branched out over the past few years adding new sports to the athletic program.
A little over 10 years ago, soccer was added to the list. Over the past four years, cross country and track have been started back up and then last year, bowling got underway.

Shelton Dyland Baker

Shelton Dyland Baker, 7 months, passed away Nov. 28, 2009, at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Shelton Dyland was born April 2, 2009, in Knoxville, to Henry Malcolm Frazier and Tammy Ann Baker Holt.
Survivors include his mother, Tammy Ann Baker, of Sparta; brothers and sisters, Mysteria, Destiny and Dale Holt, Malcolm and David Parks, Edith Marlene Hunter; grandparents, Edna and Dillon Baker, Sandy and Morris Frazier; and great-grandparents, Ester Hall, Tom Baker and Lorene Young.
Funeral service was 3 p.m., Dec. 1, 2009, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Saylors Cemetery. Irving Parker officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Dorothy Jane Miller

Dorothy Jane Miller, 64, passed away Nov. 28, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Miller was born June 4, 1945, in Spencer, to Harvey and Bertha Mae Simmons Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Jane K. Walling.
Survivors include her sister, Anna Lattimore, of Sparta; Alice Miller, of Dunkirk, of New York; niece, Lorie Shockley, of Sparta; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., Dec. 1, 2009, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Highland Cemetery. David Lee England officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Steven Dow Howard

Steven Dow Howard, 21, passed away Nov. 28, 2009, in Nashville.
Mr. Howard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dow and Ruby Howard.
Survivors include his father, Charlie Dow Howard, of Nashville; mother, Mary Lou Taylor and husband Larry, of Nashville; brothers, Eric (Kandie) Greene, Jason Taylor, both of Nashville; sister, Amanda Taylor, of Nashville; niece “Nay Nay” Greene; nephew, “Cam Cam” Greene, both of Nashville; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Dec. 4, 2009, at West Harpeth Funeral Home, 6962 Charlotte Pike, in Nashville. The family will receive friends 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Dec. 3, at the funeral home.

Adelin Evelyn (Jo) Herd, formerly of White County, passed away, Nov. 25, 2009, in Tyler, Texas. Mrs. Herd was a resident of Yantis, Texas.
She was born Nov. 20, 1933, in Putnam County, to James William and Laura Elizabeth England Walker.
Mrs. Herd was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Johnnie Mae Walker and Jimmie Ann Swoape Hayes.
She was retired from Baylor Hospital Radiology Associates.

Zelma Mae Roller, 94, of McMinnville, passed away Nov. 27, 2009, at NHC Healthcare of McMinnville.
Mrs. Roller was born March 28, 1915, in Warren County.
She had been a homemaker and a member of Dibrell Church of Christ.
Mrs. Roller was preceded in death by her parents, James Lee and Rosa Glenn Mitchell; husband, James (Jimmy) Roller; and sister, Elsie Williamson.

Dwight Cooper, 60, of the Manson community, passed away Nov. 29, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents, Shellie and Avo Turner Cooper; stepfather, Ken Turner; and granddaughter, Terri.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Bilbrey Cooper, of the Manson community; daughters, Melissa Bryan and husband Jason, of Sparta; Sheila Russell and husband, Larry, of Jamestown, Kady Lenora Cooper, of the Manson Community; sister, Carolyne Gunter and husband Noble, of Cape Cora, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Overton Lesley, 66, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Lesley was born Jan. 21, 1943, in White County, to Cecil David Lesley and Maggie Gertrude Jones Lesley.
He had been a furniture maker.
Mr. Lesley was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his daughter, Tammy Anway and her son, Dakota, both of Sparta; sons, David Lesley, of Cookeville, Overton Ivan Lesley and wife Redina, of Texas, and their children, Overton Daniel, Bryan Marshall, Jessica Thyme, Alexander Kaelyn, Helen Lorraine and Florence Corrine Lesley.
Funeral service was 11 a.m., Dec. 1, 2009, graveside, at Plainview Cemetery, on Highway 84. Earl Alverson officiated.

I, as we all do, sometimes take things for granted. We are all too often left assuming that people know what you stand for, know what you believe in, then all of the sudden you are confronted with the fact that the truth is anything but what you perceived. I, and my fellow Republicans, am caught in this as we debate some of the most important issues that this country has ever faced. An Ohio man, traveling with his family for the holidays, was injured on Crossville Highway, Nov. 24, after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a yellow-colored tractor-trailer, which left the scene.

Carl Cummings Wallace, 91, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Wallace was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Sparta, to Mal Cummings Wallace and Emma Passons Wallace.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Leta Mae Hickman Wallace.
