Warriorettes slay Lady Dragons

The Warriorettes had been itching to get back on the court since their last outing more than a week prior to Saturday night.

Thirteen second half turnovers, along with frigid shooting from the field and the free throw line were the downfall of the Warriors in their battle with York Institute Saturday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.
The Dragons handed the Warriors their fourth loss of the season by a score of 57-52 dropping WCHS to 2-4 overall. The Dragons improved to 3-4.

Bobbie Nicklene Bryant, 85, of Walling, passed away Dec. 6, 2009.
Mrs. Bryant was born March 13, 1924, in Van Buren County, to Samuel Hitchcock and Lula Esta Johnson Hitchcock.
She attended First Assembly of God Church.
Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Bryant; and brothers and sisters, Morris Hitchcock, Harge Hitchcock, Marline Hitchcock, Alma Chambers, Relly Hitchcock, Louise Lyttle, Raymond Hitchcock, Cleo Delong, Coffman Hitchcock, Alton Hitchcock, Haskel Hitchcock, Dema Hitchcock, Willis Dillon, Katherine Baldwin, and Johnson Dillon.

Hilda Alene Adkins, 88, passed away Dec. 9, 20009, at Miller’s Merry Manor, in Indiana.
Mrs. Adkins was born Jan. 15, 1921, to T.A. Clark and Iva Frances Dunlap Clark.
Funeral service was 4 p.m., Dec. 12, 2009, at Keplinger Funeral Home, in Hartford City, Ind., with burial in Elizabethtown Cemetery.

Lafever arrested after alleged hit and run

Shelley Marie Lafever was reportedly the driver of this vehicle when she allegedly hit at least two vehicles on North Church Street and ran over a fire hydrant.

Shelley Marie Lafever is booked into White County Jail after being arrested on three charges.

Bowlers wrap up regular season with split

The White County High School bowling team wrapped up their regular season against Jackson County and came away with a split.
The Warriorettes, despite being one player short for the afternoon, still managed to take the 20-7 win for their second of the season over the Blue Devils.
The two teams split the first game of the series earning four points each. The Warriorettes won four of the six individual games, but came up short in the total pin fall 518-487. Taking individual wins were Shelia Holloway (106-58), Megan James (96-85), Julia Short (124-114) and Kayla Clary (84-82).

Suspected car theft ring uncovered

Dusting for prints. Detective John Ford dusts for fingerprints on one of the stolen vehicles recently recovered with the help of tips from several citizens.

Stolen vehicles. These vehicles, all of which had previously been reported stolen, sit in the White County Sheriff Department impound lot to be held as evidence after they were recovered over the weekend in various parts of the county.

A White County man has been arrested after several tips from residents led officers to uncover what they believe to be a suspected car theft ring, operating in White and surrounding counties.

Members of Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce were informed Monday night about plans for the next four-year phase of Highlands Initiative and how the regional economic acceleration program will benefit this immediate area.

Cookeville woman arrested for forged prescription

Amanda Clare Rodgers, 30, of Cookeville

A Cookeville woman was arrested Dec. 2 when she attempted to pick up a forged prescription at Walgreens in Sparta.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Amanda Clare Rodgers, 30, was charged with forgery for trying to fill a prescription, reportedly from a doctor’s office in Cookeville.
Investigator Travis Barker arrested Rodgers when she came to pick up the prescription.
She was booked into the White County Justice Center under a $50,000 bond. Her initial court appearance was scheduled for Dec. 4.
Guth stated there will be further investigation into the incident.

Sullivan murder to mark one year

The frivolity and lightheartedness normally associated with the Christmas season will be absent from one particular family this year as they anxiously wait for law enforcement to find out who killed their son almost one year ago.
Terry Sullivan was found murdered in his Gillen Subdivision home, on Jan. 16, 2009. Investigators with Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are still pursuing leads in the case, but have not yet made any arrests. Joe Sullivan, Terry’s father, expressed his extreme frustration with law enforcement officials about how they have handled the case.

Small Division teams earn spots in finals

The White County elementary school basketball tournament got underway Monday with four teams earning spots in the small division championship games.
The top seeded Doyle Lady Indians defeated Central View 24-8 to take the first spot in the title game.
Doyle led 4-0 after one period of play and held a 12-0 advantage at the half. Hannah Faulkner led the winners with 10 points. Maggie Savage, Megan Anderson and Saige Johnson netted four each. Katy Wilson chipped in with two points. Laura Robbins tallied four for Central View. Haley Snyder and Halie Carson netted two each.

Freshman teams sweep Cumberland County

The Warriorette freshman/sophomore team, led by the 19 points of Lacey Clark, picked up the 43-37 victory over Cumberland County Monday.

Devon Davidson and the freshman Warriors roared out to a 14-2 lead on the way to the 67-38 win over Cumberland County.

The Warrior freshman basketball team and the Warriorette freshman/sophomore squad made it a complete sweep of the Cumberland County Jet freshmen on Monday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.

White County has several former athletes involved in the college basketball scene this season.
Local fans get the chance to watch former Warriorette, Kellie Jolly Harper’s North Carolina State team play on television this weekend. The Wolfpack will take on South Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m. on SportsSouth. In her first year at the helm of the Wolfpack, Harper has guided her team to a 6-3 start. Their losses have come to opponents who have a cumulative record of 21-4. They lost to 17th ranked Vanderbilt by a score of 77-71. Is next year the year? For the majority of the summer, the ball parks down the Smithville Highway are idle just like in the above picture. Will that change next summer?

The ballpark located down the Smithville Highway has been a bone of contention for people all across White County.
Before the park was even built, the squabble began as to where the new park would be built.
