WCHS duo comes up short at state track meet

Success is not always defined by winning only.
Despite coming up short in the preliminary heats in their respective races at the TSSAA state track meet, Casey Bales and Morgan Voyles still put the finishing touches on successful spring seasons.

William Alonzo Mason

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

William Alonzo Mason, 90, of Walling, passed away peacefully at this home, in Atlanta, on May 25, 2010.
Mr. Mason served with the U.S. Navy, in World War II, on the battleship USS New York. Upon returning to the states, he graduated from Tulane University where he pledged SAE and maintained a lifelong brotherhood with them.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patty, and his daughter, Martha.
Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the South, in Marietta, Ga.
Cremation Society of the South is in charge of arrangements.


Mattie Lorene Young Briggs

Mattie Lorene Young Briggs, 78, of Sparta, passed away May 26, 2010, at Baptist Hospital, in Nashville.
Mrs. Briggs was born July 22, 1931, in White County, to Claude E. and Maude Lawson Young.
She had worked at Mallory Controls.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Walter O. Briggs, of Sparta; daughter, Virginia Lewis and husband Nelson, of Sparta; son Walter Briggs Jr. and wife Loretta, of Cookeville; sister, Christine Norris, of Dearborn, Mich.; two grandchildren, Tim Swoape, of Washington D.C., Kimberly Morgan and husband Matt, of Crossville; one great-grandchild, Lyric Morgan; sisters-in-law, Lyda Hayes Briggs, of Sparta, Elizabeth Briggs, of Tallahassee, Fla., Rachel Weaver, of Madison … Read More

Man charged in connection with four burglaries

Recovered property. These weapons were recovered recently, along with more than 100 other stolen items, after an investigation led to the arrest of a White County man, who officers allege was involved in four burglaries.

Roy Edward Young Jr., 39

A White County man was arrested, on May 22, for his alleged involvement in four burglaries in the northern portion of White County, involving more than 100 stolen items.
According to Detective David Ward with White County Sheriff Department, Roy Edward Young Jr., 39, faces several charges after information reportedly led to the location and recovery of the stolen items.

The following are the results reported from Sparta Little League’s senior girls’ and 9/10 boys’ baseball leagues.
Senior girls league action got underway on May 6th when U.S. Bank picked up a pair of wins. They opened the season with a 6-4 victory over Bill Boruff and made it two in a row with a 16-8 win over Gatorade.
On May 8th, Bill Boruff edged Gatorade 11-9 and then followed with an 11-0 win over the same team on May 14th. They made it a sweep for the day with a 12-2 victory over U.S. Bank.

The pitching machine leagues opened their season on April 12th with full slates of games.
The pitching machine baseball league opened the season with Rotary taking an 11-5 win over red Turner’s. Trey Sliger and Will Griggs each scored three runs for Rotary. Red Turner’s got runs from Kyle Erickson, Joseph Johnson, Tyler Seals and Daniel Gentry.

Traffic stop reveals rolling meth lab

Three people face drug charges after a traffic stop, on May 23, allegedly led to the discovery of meth and meth-making components.
According to Deputy Joey Williams with White County Sheriff Department, he was on patrol as part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office’s Click It or Ticket campaign.
Williams stated he initiated a traffic stop, at approximately 4:57 p.m., on a maroon Chevrolet pickup truck, on Bunkerhill Road, because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

THP patrolling heavily during Memorial Day holiday

Tennessee Highway Patrol is joining forces with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office and law enforcement agencies across the state for a “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign that began on May 24 and continues through June 6.
The campaign will include the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which is the beginning of the summer travel season.
According to preliminary figures from Tennessee Department of Safety, 989 people were killed on Tennessee roadways in 2009. More than half of the 820 killed in passenger vehicle crashes were not wearing seatbelts.

Homer Lee Woody, 71, of Sparta, passed away May 24, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Woody was born May 28, 1938, in Putnam County, to Floyd and Retta Trisdale Woody.

Ita Maria Fitzpatrick Thompson, 69, of Chattanooga, passed away March 30, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Thompson was the daughter-in-law of the late Paul and Tootsie Thompson, who had resided in Sparta.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Balinsole, Galaway, Ireland, to Patrick Fitzpatrick and Bridgette Walsh Fitzpatrick.
After graduating high school, she moved to the United States to attend college and later moved to Italy where she met her husband, Fred Thompson, an American sailor, and followed him back to the states where they married and had three children.

Minnie Dorthy Rust, 83, of Sparta, passed away May 25, 2010, at Masters Health Care, in Algood.
Mrs. Rust was born May 3, 1927, in White County, to John Casto and Jennie Hitchcock Ray.
A memorial service will be at a later date at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Logie Myrl Anderson, 79, of Beechmont, Ky., passed away May 23, 2010, at Skyline Medical Center, in Nashville
Mrs. Anderson was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Lafayette, Ind., to Milton Israel and Logie Elizabeth Andrews Perry.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Carl Cloyd, 84, of Sparta, passed away May 23, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Cloyd was born Jan. 28, 1926, in White County, to Casto and Elizabeth (Lizzie Mae) Wright Cloyd.
He was veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Tech 5 in World War II. Mr. Cloyd was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a retired maintenance employee for Sparta Housing Authority.
