Harold Stassen Blankenship, 61, of Sparta, passed away June 29, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Blankenship was born Jan. 12, 1948, in DeKalb County, to Joseph Gerome and Vestie Pack Blankenship.
He spent his life serving and protecting the citizens of Sparta and White County as a law enforcement officer, recently retiring as an investigator/detective for Sparta Police Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Harold Stassen Blankenship Jr. and Aaron Qualls.

Floyd Dean Sapp, 53, of Spencer, passed away June 27, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Sapp was born April 24, 1957, in White County, to Davis Floyd Sapp and Katherine Marie Snodgrass Sapp.
He served tin the U.S. Army and had been an employee for Walmart Deli. He was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. Sapp was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gene Sapp.

Thuan Joseph Jones, 28, of Quebeck, passed away June 29, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Jones was born Sept. 16, 1981, in Evansville, Ind.
He had been active in FFA during his high school days.
Survivors include his parents, Kimberly and Charles V. (Dave) Cole, of Quebeck; brothers, David Brimer and wife Suzetta, of Quebeck, James and Joseph Cole, both Las Vegas; sister, Jessica Brierm, of Sparta; niece and nephews, Kara Brimer, Hunter Brimer, Matthew Vollman, Nicolas Carrier, Joseph McCloud, Jeffrey McCloud; aunts, Judy Cole, Marsh Barnes; and special niece, Kandy Gail King.

Unemployment rate in White County lowest this year

Jobless rates for White County are at its lowest numbers since the beginning of 2010.
This news comes after Tennessee Department of Labor released the county-by-county figures last week, which showed White County at 12.5 percent unemployment rate.
White County was among the 86 counties that experienced a rate decrease for May 2010. Rates increased in seven counties, while counties remained at the same figure as April 2010.
White County started off the new year with a 14.5 percent jobless rate in January, and the numbers have continued to decline with each successive month. In February, White County logged a 14.2 percent unemployment rate; March, 13.7 percent; and … CONTINUED

Philips Luminaires honors employees with luncheon

Employees at Phillips Professional Luminaires were treated to a luncheon, on June 25, which was attended by several dignitaries, including state representatives Charlotte Burkes and Henry Fincher, as well as business and industry leaders from Sparta, White County and across the Upper Cumberland.
“This today is all about appreciation,” said Dave Uhrik, Philips Sparta’s plant manager. “We recently had a visit by our international, global operations manager and he claims we’re the best in North America. (He) wants us to be the best in the world and he thinks we can do it.”

Dorothy Randolph Selby, 86, of Sparta, passed away June 27, 2010,at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Survivors include her children, Sue Carmichael and husband Marty, Karen Fiste, Ron Selby and wife Lynne, Keith Selby and wife Cathy; grandchildren, Lee and Scott Carmichael, Adam, Kelli and Jonathan Selby, Brian and Travis Selby, Mikki and Bailee Fiste; and great-grandchildren, Isabella Carmichael and Landon Selby.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., June 30, 2010, at Copeland Chapel Church, with burial in Copeland Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m., June 29, at the funeral home.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


James Morris (Jim) Vaughn

James Morris (Jim) Vaughn, 98, of Sparta, passed away June 27, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Vaughn was born May 11, 1912, in Putnam County, to Russell and Dora Stewart Vaughn.
He was a member of the Findlay United Methodist Church. He was a farmer, retired livestock trader and a retired school bus driver. He also served on White County Fair Board and was a former alderman for City of Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vinnie Maynard Vaughn; and two great-grandsons Daniel Martin and William Jacob Vaughn.

Independence weekend is just days away and a day full of music on Saturday will mark the White County celebration.
Everyone is invited to come and be a part of the gathering that will take place beginning at noon, Saturday, July 3, in Sparta Amphitheater.
As always, in an effort to appease as many musical tastes as possible, event coordinator Woody Phillips has put together a musically diversified show, highlighting the area’s best talent.

Danny Luna, 52, of Crossville, passed away June 26, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Luna as born Nov. 28, 1957, in White County, to the Clifford Lee and Margaret Marie Young Luna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ricky and Tony Luna.
Mr. Luna had been a factory worker.
Survivors include three sisters, Maryilyn Easterwood and husband Robert, of Cannon County, Barbara Presley and husband Johnny, of Crossville, Jean Young, of Sparta; 11 nieces and nephews; and 19 great-nieces and great-nephews.
