Robert Ewin Delon, 69, of Spencer, passed away July 29, 2010, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Mr. Delon was born Oct. 14, 1940, in Spencer, to Connard and Robbie Maynard Delon.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Aug. 1, 2010, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Molloy Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m., July 30; 9 a.m.-9 p.m., July 31; and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 1, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Leon Hill, 70, of Texas City, Texas, passed away July 28, 2010.
Mr. Hill was a former resident of Sparta.
He was born July 9, 1940, in Texas, to Allen and Lucy Hill.
Mr. Hill was a retired insurance salesman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Joey Hill.

Mildred Juanita McBride, 74, of Gulf Shores, Mich., passed away April 27, 2010, in Michigan.
She was born Oct. 31, 1935, in White County, to Jack and Lassie Walker McBride.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m., July 31, 2010, at Blue Spring Presbyterian Church, with burial in Blue Spring Cemetery.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Norma Lucile Hall Hay

Norma Lucile Hall Hay, 90, of Sparta, passed away July 27, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Hay was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Pulaski, Ky., to Luther A. Hall and Lela May Fredrick Hall.
She served her country as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was stationed in continental USA followed by service in England during World War II.
After her Army service, Mrs. Hay’s continued nursing career brought her to Hawaii where she met and wed Gilbert Hay Jr. Several years later they, along with their two sons, returned to Ohio where she continued … Read More

Preston (Pete) Lee Dobbs, 47, of Sparta, passed away July 28, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Dobbs was born Dec. 7, 1962, in White County.
He had been employed as a logger and construction worker.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Eugene Dobbs.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Wylodean Dunn Reed and Charles Reed, of Baxter; two brothers, Anthony Dobbs, Dale Dobbs, both of Baxter; four sisters, Jody Falk, Feleshia Christian, Vanessa Dennis, all of Sparta, Kathy Ashbough, of Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.

Kevin F. Gallagher, 58, passed away July 28, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Gallagher was born Dec. 20, 1951, in New Jersey, to Thomas J. Gallagher and Mary Ross Gallagher.
Survivors include his brother, Richard Gallagher and wife Judy, of Walling; sister, Joan Gallagher, of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Gallagher.
Burial will be in New Jersey.

White County’s unemployment rate for June 2010 was the second lowest figure for the past 13 months, although the number indicated a fraction of an increase.
The unemployment rate for June 2010, in White County, was 12.8 percent, compared to 12.5 percent in May 2010. However, the June 2010 number was a definite improvement over the June 2009 unemployment rate of 15.4 percent.

Five injured in head-on crash

Crash. The four occupants of this Lincoln MKZ suffered injuries in a head-on crash, on July 23, on Highway 70, between Lucille Street and Cassville Lane, in the Cassville community. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured in the incident.

Injured. The driver of this GMC pickup was also injured in the Friday crash. Seatbelts are credited with avoiding much more serious injury to occupants of both vehicles.

Medical help. Personnel with White County Emergency Medical Services and Cassville Volunteer Fire Department work quickly, but cautiously, to get victims to the hospital after a head-on crash on Highway 70, in the Cassville community.

Keeping an eye on the heat

As the athletes who compete in fall sports hit the ground running for official practice, the temperature and the heat index continue to rise.
With less than a month remaining until the official start of the 2010 seasons, practice is a must in preparation for the coming season, but even more important is the health of those who compete.
To protect those athletes, the TSSAA enacted a heat index policy last summer and the White County School Board, following that lead, made the policy tighter and enacted it for all outdoor activities for all schools, not just high school sports.

Van Buren County drug bust nets 15 arrests

Fifteen individuals were arrested, on July 27, in Van Buren County, after a two-year investigation resulted in warrants being issued for the suspects’ alleged involvement in the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine.
The individuals arrested include Allen Dale Cole, 46; Robert Helton, 46; Charles Helton, 48; Larry Sullivan, 28; Eddie Simmons, 32; Tonya Mills, 33; Kevin Argo, 32; Cheyenne Mooneyham, 36; Jimmy Hopkins, Jr., 32; Wendell Rigsby, 39; Titus Sullivan, 30; Cody McCluskey, 22; Amber Rogers, 25; Crystal Shockley, 24; Jeffrey Hobbs, 31; Joshua Simmons, 29; Timothy Ryan Bouldin, 24; and Ashley Smith, 24.

The hitting has begun

The Warriors began full contact practice Monday in preparation for the season opener on August 20th at Franklin County.

For two weeks, the Warrior football team had been playing two-hand touch. On Monday, the hitting began.
Official practice for all fall sports teams began Monday. Football teams had the most noticeable change as the pads went on and they were allowed to hit for the first time since spring practice.

Sparta man arrested for theft

Stolen. This 2008 Suzuki G60 motorcycle, which had been reported stolen, was recovered, on July 26, in Sparta. James Allen Bean, 26 (inset) was placed under arrest.

A White County man was arrested and a stolen motorcycle was recovered, on July 26, after law enforcement officials found the bike and rider in the Knollcrest Apartments parking lot.
According to Detective Craig Capps, he spotted a white and blue 2008 Suzuki G60 motorcycle, while on patrol, as it entered the Knollcrest Apartments parking lot.
Capps reportedly came into contact with the rider, James Allen Bean, 26, who allegedly told Capps the motorcycle belonged to him.

Funeral services for Abraham Poteet (A.P.) McClain, of Cookeville, was July 27 at 11 a.m. from the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Interment, with Military Honors will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery.
Mr. McClain passed away July 25, 2010, at Masters Health Care Center.
He was born at Bill’s Branch, in Overton County, Tenn., Sept. 16, 1924, to Robert Andrew and Ova Ellen Welch McClain. He was named for his mother’s brother, Rev. Abraham Poteet (A.P.) Welch, a Nazarene preacher, of Monterey.
