Police warn of ongoing scams

Recent reports of White County residents being scammed out of thousands of dollars have prompted local authorities to warn resident of the danger of dealing with people with whom they are not familiar, whether it be online or on the phone.
According to Detective Chris Isom with White County Sheriff Department, several calls have come in to the department about people suspecting they have been victims of scams, including resident being notified they have won some type of lottery.
“We want everybody to know that these are scams,” said Isom. “If it seems too good to be true, it is.”

‘Drag racing’ leads to drug arrests

Two Sparta men face charges after officers answered a complaint of drag racing on Highway 111, on July 16.
According to Detective Craig Capps with White County Sheriff Department, Jared Thomas Fowler, 19, was arrested after officers with the department executed a traffic stop from the ‘drag racing’ complaint and reportedly found approximately one ounce of marijuana in his vehicle.

Sparta Little League softball ousted in state tournament

The Sparta Little League 11-12 year old softball all stars traveled to Mayville over the weekend for their state tournament and posted an 0-2 mark.
The opening game on Saturday was against Grainger County. Prior to the game, the host team provided the teams with a meal followed by opening ceremonies.
Sparta fell behind 8-0 early, but rallied to make it close. They came back with six runs late in the fourth inning to pull to within two, but could get no closer, as that was the final score.

Babe Ruth all stars eliminated

Ty Cloyd applies the tag to a Cookeville runner in 13 year Babe Ruth all star action.

Both the 13 year old and 15 and under Sparta Babe Ruth All Stars were eliminated from further action with two losses over the weekend.
The 15-year-old team, playing in Livingston, did open their campaign with a 2-1 win over Jamestown on Thursday behind the pitching of Jacob Chavez. They, however, suffered back-to-back losses for the exit. They were defeated 6-1 by Lafayette and 7-4 by Cookeville. No details of those games were available at press time.

Sponsors sought for C-VEST Fun Run/Walk

Loads of fun. Participants in last year’s C-VEST Fun Run/Walk fought off the cold at the beginning of the event, but were glad the temperatures were low once they got on the course. The annual event provides much needed funding for the emergency relief organization.

C-VEST (Community Volunteer Emergency Service Team) is seeking sponsors for its 2010 Fun Run/Walk, which will take place on Dec. 11, 2010.
The purpose of the 5K and one-mile event is to raise funds for their community service endeavors.

I do a lot of bragging about how good our basketball teams were in the 90’s, but something I fail to mention is that we stood out in another area during that time.
It would have been hard to find another school that had as many outstanding student performers of the national anthem. In addition to getting to watch some of the best high school basketball teams play, prior to the game we were fortunate enough to get to hear some great renditions of the national anthem.

Timothy Wayne Vance

Mr. Timothy Wayne Vance, 61, passed away, on July 19, at his home in Sparta.
Mr. Vance was born, on Mar. 29, 1949, in Sparta.
Survivors include daughters, Shawna Phy and husband, Doug of Sparta, Krista Vance of Sparta, and Tonya Vance of Sparta; friend, Kim Clayton of Sparta; and four grandchildren, Leira Phy, Damien Phy, Jamison Vance, and Katie Trudel all of Sparta.
A memorial service will be held, at 7 p.m., on July 23, at his residence at 820 Fred Hill Road.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma Ruth Poore Hunter, 84, a resident of the Cassville Community, passed away, on July 19, 2010, at NHC of Sparta.
Mrs. Hunter was born, on November 22, 1925, in White County, to the late Orville Edward and Lorene Jones Poore. She was a retired factory worker, farmer and avid gardner. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Rancy Lewis Hunter; brother, James Edward Poore and sister, Pauline Bruce.

Mr. James Franklin Moore Jr., 77, passed away, July 17, 2010, at Riverpark Hospital in McMinnville, Tennessee.
Mr. Moore was born to James Franklin Moore and Martha Avo Vaughn Moore, on May 9, 1933, in Van Buren County, Tennessee.

Funeral service for Nettie Annalee Moore, 82, of Sparta, will be, at 10 a.m., on July 21, at Bilbrey Funeral Home in Crossville.
Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
Family will receive friends, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on July 20, at Bilbrey Funeral Home.
Survivors include three sons, Gary, Harry and Jimmy Moore; and one daughter, Mildred Kerr.
Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. of Crossville is in charge of arrangements.


Sandra Hyder

Ms. Sandra Hyder, 62, passed away July 18, 2010, at her home in Sparta.
Ms. Hyder was born to Lloyd “Coon” Hyder and Henry Lou Thompson Hyder, on Sept. 10, 1947, in Sparta.
Survivors include her father Lloyd “Coon” Hyder of Sparta; brother, Tim Hyder of Sparta; sister Lou Ann Adcock and husband, Myron, of Sparta; special friends, Pat Lewis, Anna Randolph, Freda Davis and Barbara Brewington, all of Sparta, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother and brothers, Melvin Lloyd Hyder and William Roger “Chipper” Hyder.
