David Matthew Garman, 84, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 30, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Garman was born Feb. 23, 1926.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

David Lee Warner, 70 passed away Aug. 29, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Warner was born Jan. 20, 1940, in Flint, Mich., to Lyle Don Warner and Jeanette Van Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Sheryl Healy-Warner, of Sparta; children, Shai’Lee Eve Warner, of Sparta, David Lyle Warner Jr., of Cadillac, Mich., Lisa Marie Smith, of Davison, Mich., Denise Ann Hewitt, of Flint, Mich.; brother, Thomas Jay Warner, of Sparta; sisters, Donna White, of Rock Island, Sandra West, of Swartz Creek, Mich.; and four grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Kristin and Ryan, all of Michigan.

Howard Morris, 54, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 28, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Morris was born Sept. 15, 1955, in Baxter, to Lee and Kathleen Hedgecough Morris.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Aug. 31, 2010, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Aug. 30, at the funeral home.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Unemployment rate drops for White County

Sparta residents can now see a bright spot in the unemployment rate with the release of the July 2010 figures.
According to Tennessee Department of Labor, White County’s jobless rate is 12.2 percent, which is down from 14.6 percent in July 2009.
The July number was also the lowest since the beginning of 2010. In January, White County registered 14.5 percent unemployment, 14.2 percent in February, 13.7 percent in March, 13.1 percent in April, 12.5 percent in May and 12.7 percent in June.

Two White County men are dead after a one-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 9:35 a.m., Aug. 25, 2010, on Highway 111 South, in Sparta.

Curron Eugene Lowery

Curron Eugene Lowery, 42, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 28, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Lowery was born May 7, 1969, in White County, to Willard and Gussie Lowery.
He was employed with BASF and was an accomplished pianist.
Mr. Lowery was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Mattie Henderson, and an uncle, Sammy Chaney.

The Warriors may be a young team, but they showed one sure sign they are growing up.
Before WCHS had even ran one offensive play, the Warriors found themselves trailing 14-0 on the road. This group of Warriors, however, had one single thought in this game and it wasn’t giving up. It was winning and they did just that.

WCMS football gets conference win

The White County Middle School football team picked up their first victory of the season last Tuesday and it came in a Central Tennessee Conference contest over South Franklin County.
The Warriors defeated South 20-8.
South actually scored first, but it would be their only points of the contest. They took the opening kick and plowed the ball straight down the field with 12 consecutive running plays. The drive culminated with a two yard run. They added the two-point conversion run to take an 8-0 lead on a drive that ate up most of the clock in the first quarter.

WCHS girls finish fourth at meet

The White County High School cross country team had their first official meet of the season Saturday at the Nestle Invite at Macon County.
The Warriorettes, as a team, finished fourth out of 10 teams. Station Camp took the title with 57 points followed by Cookeville in second with 74. Riverdale captured third with 76 points.
WCHS had a total of 102 points led by Morgan Voyles and Alex Stover, who took third and fourth, respectively.

Golf team loses close one to Cookeville

With three out of five scores reported at the end of Thursday’s match, the Warrior golf team held a three stoke lead over archrival Cookeville.
However, when all the scores were in, the Cavaliers had forged ahead to take a six-stroke victory over WCHS in a District 6AAA match. The Lady Cavaliers also defeated the Warriorettes.
A.J. Wilkerson paced the Warriors with a 1-under 34 for the match, but Cookeville’s Cody Harrington was the low medalist for the day with a 2-under 33.

Jackson County wins White County Invitational

The Jackson County High School team took home the number one spot from the annual White County Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Blue Devils defeated Stone Memorial in the championship game.
The Warriorette varsity squad picked up their first victories of the season in the tournament. They went 3-2 in pool play just missing advancing on to the semifinals.

Sometimes we as sports fans, myself included, get too wrapped up in the final score and winning.
Now before I say what I am intending to say, I will admit I am one of the most competitive people around. I like to win. Ask any of my friends with whom I play board games and cards. Also let me add, that I was one of the happiest people in the stadium Friday night when the Warriors won their football game over Campbell County.

Harlin Howard (“J”) Bohannon

Harlin Howard (“J”) Bohannon, of the Spring Creek community, in Overton County, passed away Aug. 27, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Bohannon was born April 28, 1928, in Overton County, to Lee Columbus and Susie Allred Bohannon.
He was a member of McClellan Avenue Church of Christ and retired from Union Carbide, in 1992.
Mr. Bohannon was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Stella Mae Sharpe; and brother, Walter Lee Bohannon.
