Former friend charged in Doyle burglary

The alleged perpetrator of a burglary at a residence in Doyle, on Oct. 25, was arrested, after an alert neighbor noticed a visitor while the resident was not home.
According to a report by Deputy Lanny Wheeler with White County Sheriff Department, he was dispatched to a residence on Porter Road, in Doyle, about a report of a break-in that had just occurred.
The resident reportedly received a phone call from a neighbor that a former friend, Barbara Jean Williams, 67, of White County, was at her residence.

The second referendum is “for” or “against” liquor-by-the-drink in City of Sparta

Residents in Doyle will have the opportunity to vote for a new mayor in the November 2010 election after the longtime leader of the city’s board has decided not to seek reelection.
Robert Meeks, who has served almost seven years as mayor of the town that listed less than 600 residents in the 2000 census, will now watch the board’s action from the sidelines.
Two of Doyle’s current aldermen, Charlie Cloyd and Ray Spivey, are seeking the office of mayor.

Three men charged in attempted burglary

Three White County men face charges after they were reportedly discovered during an alleged attempt to break into Highway 84 Market in the early morning hours of Sept. 27.
According to a report by Deputy Robert Farris with White County Sheriff Department, Farris pulled up to the front of the market from Ray Broyles Road, at approximately 2:12 a.m., and observed a blue 1994 Ford F150 pickup truck parked “up close to the building on the Highway 84 side” with its hood up.

Electric rates set to increase on October bills

White Countians can expect to see a hike in their electric bills, in October, with the recent announcement from Tennessee Valley Authority that a 6.4 percent in the fuel cost adjustment is the reason for the increase.
TVA’s latest report indicates billing periods beginning Oct. 1, 2010, will denote a fuel cost adjustment change from the current amount of 0.659 cents per kilowatt-hour to 1.127 cents per kilowatt-hour.
In comparison to the September figures, the October FCA will increase residential monthly bills between $4 and $8.50, which will depend on the customer’s usage level.

Holly Derr scored a pair of goals in the Warriorettes' 5-2 win over Sequatchie County.

The White County High School girls’ soccer team notched their second victory of the season Thursday when they defeated Sequatchie County 5-2.
WCHS went on the road to Dunlap and tasted victory for the second time this season. Three different Warriorettes scored in the contest with a pair of players netting two goals each. Shelby O’Neal and Holly Derr both found the back of the net twice. Freshman Kaitlin Heath scored the first goal of her varsity career.

WCHS golf wraps up regular season

The White County High School golf team wrapped up their regular season with a pair of matches last week.
WCHS played host to a former district opponent, Siegel, on Thursday at Riverwatch Golf Course. The Warriors, behind the strong performance of A.J. Wilkerson, defeated Siegel by eight strokes.
Wilkerson fired a five-under, 31 to push his team to the victory over the Stars in the nine hole match. The Warriors, as a team, finished with a 157 while Siegel tallied a team total of 165.

After a chain-reaction crash, on Sept. 17, emergency responders work quickly to care for the injured, and to get the roadway back open for busy afternoon traffic.

A three-vehicle, chain-reaction crash, on Sept. 17, sent one individual to the hospital with minor injuries and disrupted traffic on the east side of Sparta for nearly an hour.
According to Officer Brent Copeland with Sparta Police Department, Bobby Glen Hawkins, 66, of Old Hickory, Tenn., had stopped for a red light in the eastbound lane of Bockman Way, at Gaines Street, in a gray 1999 Lincoln Continental.

Lt. R.C. Christian, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, inspects this Chevrolet truck after a head-on crash, Sept. 23, on McMinnville Highway, near the intersection of Vaughn Lane, which left the three occupants of both vehicles injured.

A two-vehicle, head-on crash, on Sept 23, on McMinnville Highway, injured all three occupants with two suffering serious multiple injuries, requiring they be transported by emergency medical helicopters.

Chocolate Banana Bread

One-half cup margarine softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 bananas, mashed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 and one-half cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 cup cocoa
One-half cup light sour cream
One-half cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease 6-5×2 (miniature) loaf pans. In a large bowl, cream together margarine, sugar and eggs. Stir in bananas and vanilla. In another bowl mix flour, baking soda and cocoa. Stir into the creamed ingredients. Blend in sour cream and chocolate chips. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the
