Clifford Lee, 78, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 30, 2010, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Lee was born Aug. 13, 1932, in Putnam County, to Charlie and Nettie Davis Lee.
Survivors include five brothers, Cheerful lee, Carmel Lee, Clayton Lee, all of Cookeville, Clyde Lee, of Baxter, Cordell Lee, of Rutledge, and special friend, Dorothy Brown.

Warriors and Warriorettes defeated on final day

The Sonic Shootout wrapped up Thursday with eight games deciding the finishing place of each team in the tournament.
Upperman’s girls’ and Riverdale’s boys’ took home the titles from the 3rd edition of the event.
The homestanding White County Warriors led at every break except the most important one in the boy’s title game. WCHS held a six point halftime lead, but could not hold off former district foe, Riverdale, in the second half. Riverdale outscored WCHS 12-8 in the fourth quarter to take the title. Mrs. Johnie R. Petty Pitman, 77, of Southgate, Mich., passed away Dec. 28, 2010, in Michigan.
Mrs. Pitman was born July 31, 1933,in White County, to Obe and Maggie Petty.
Survivors include her husband, Carlin Pitman, of Southgate, Mich.; children, Danny (Randa) Pitman, of Murray, Ky., Colette (Tony) Amato, of Southgate, Mich., Sherry (Jason) Senior, of Southgate, Mich.; grandchildren, Andrea Mijat, Nichole Traugh, Adam Pitman, Aaron Pitman, Anthony Amato, Jessica Senior; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carolyn Mabe, of Doyle, and Linda Robinson, of Sparta.

Fire destroys unoccupied home

Smoke and ash are all that remain of this residence on Billy Goat Circle, after an early morning fire, on Dec. 28. No injuries were reported in the incident, which kept firefighters busy more than three hours.

An unoccupied residence on Billy Goat Circle, in the southwestern portion of White County, was destroyed by fire, on Dec. 28, despite quick response by firefighters but a nearby residence was saved during the early morning blaze.
According to Matt McBride with Central View Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched, at approximately 3:20 a.m., and arrived in less than eight minutes to find the structure completely engulfed in flames.

Sales tax collections decline in November

Although local and state sales tax collections declined from October 2010 to November 2010, White County’s overall outlook is better than one year ago.
According to statistics from Tennessee Department of Revenue, state sales tax collected in White County, for November 2010, totaled $1,001,183. Local sales tax collections were $277,816. These figures are lower in comparison to October 2010, when state sales tax collections totaled $1,069,990, with local sales tax collections at $291,893.
During a five-year look at White County’s collections, November 2006 listed $1,059,343, in state sales tax collections. November 2007 and 2008 showed increases, at $1,162,232 and $1,217,485, respectively. However, in November 2009, the state sales … Read More

E-911 Board discusses cell phone problems

During the Dec. 21 meeting, members of White County Emergency Communications District Board of Directors discussed problems with cell phone reception in the county that could have serious repercussions for residents in emergency situations.
An apparent recent decline in coverage in various areas of the county prompted the Board to ask the Board attorney, Mike Kress to draft a letter to Verizon Wireless to formally inform them of the problem.
Director Wayne Sherrell told the Board of recent complaints from Verizon customers, as well as emergency responders, trying to reach emergency dispatchers but they were unable to make the calls or the signals were dropped during the emergency … Read More

Morgan (Junior) Cravens Jr., 86, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 25, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Cravens was born Nov. 10, 1924, in White County, to Morgan Cravens Sr. and Lillie West Cravens.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Dennis Earl Cravens; brothers, Roy Lee Cravens, Casto Cravens; and sisters, Besty Cravens and Vernell Poston.

Championship game match-ups set for Sonic Shootout

The Warriors will take on Riverdale at 7:30 p.m. in the Sonic Shootout championship game. The Warriorettes will play for third against Grundy County at 3 p.m.

Two days of the Sonic Shootout are in the books and the final day pairings are complete.
The Warriors will play in the boys’ title game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Riverdale. WCHS defeated Upperman 60-48 to earn the spot in the finals.
Riverdale defeated Gallatin 57-41 to earn the other spot in the boys’ championship game.
Gallatin and Upperman will meet at 4:30 in the third place game.

Martha Willene Wilhite Green, 82, of White County, passed away Dec. 27, 2010, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mrs. Green was born July 18, 1928, in White County, to Harvey and Maggie Martin Wilhite.
She was a life-long resident of the Cassville Community. After attending David Lipscomb University and Tennessee Technological University, Mrs. Green taught 42 years in the White County school system. She taught at Jones’ Chapel, New Hope, Shady Grove, Hensley’s Chapel, Cassville, Central View, Doyle, East Sparta City School and Woodland Park.

Rose Lee Rice, 61, of Sparta, TN passed away on Dec. 24, 2010, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.
She was born Oct. 29, 1949, in Michigan City, Ind.
She worked in Sparta at Wagner, Red Kap, Dixie Food Mart, and Lazy Days Food Mart. Upon retirement Rose spent her time with family and friends and volunteering at White County Community Hospital.
Rose was a member of Sparta First Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Gary Shaffield; niece and husband, Stephanie and Wally Irvin; nephew and wife, Jacob and Danielle Shaffield; great-nephew, Aaron; great-nieces, Madeline, Caroline and Hannah.

Warriorettes snap three game skid

I’ll take that ball. Warriorette sophomore guard, Allyson Quillen, rips the ball away from an Oakdale player during Tuesday’s win by WCHS. The Warriorettes took on Clarkrange in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The Warriorettes snapped their three game losing skid in the opening round of the Sonic Shootout.
WCHS handed the Oakdale Lady Eagles their first loss of the season and advanced one game closer to the title game of their own tournament with the 54-47 victory.
