Warriors finish runner-up in MidSouth Classic

Rutha Taylor Adcock, 103, passed away, on Dec. 16, 2010, at DeKalb County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Adcock was born to Herman Taylor and Dellar Martha Henderson Taylor in DeKalb County, Tenn.
Survivors include loving children Jessie Adcock and Mary Luna (Rosten), both of Sparta; daughter-in-law Dorothy Adcock of Sparta; grandchildren Richard Adcock, Carl Young, Myron Adcock, Darrell Adcock and Shannon Weaver; great grandchildren Heath Young, Jarred Young and Mironica Franklin; great great grandchildren Gabreiana Young, Jackson Young, Eli Young and Ella Young.

Elks Lodge helps economically disadvantaged residents

Holiday goodies. Santa hands a ‘pre-Christmas toy’ to one of the many children, who visited Elks Lodge #2863, on Dec. 18. The Lodge worked with Feed the Children to make the much-needed supplies available to the community.

On Dec. 18, members of the Sparta Elks Lodge #2863, in conjunction with Feed the Children, brought a truckload of treats, drinks, toys and school supplies to the Lodge, located at 4424 Old Kentucky Road, at Baker’s Crossroads, to provide for White County residents suffering through these difficult economic times.

Charles Clay Young

Charles Clay Young, 67, of Sparta, passed away, on Dec. 17, 2010, at The Cumberland House, in Crossville.
Mr. Young was born in Sparta, on July 1, 1943, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Pearl Lee Young.
He worked as a security guard at Jeld-Wen.
The family will have a private graveside service and burial at a later date.

In conjunction with the National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be cranking up its enforcement effort throughout the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s Day celebrations to find and remove impaired drivers from Tennessee roadways.
State Troopers will be conducting more than 100 sobriety and driver license checkpoints with a clear message to motorists – “Don’t Wreck the Holidays.”

Elsie Maranda Johnson Wright, 97, passed away on the morning of Dec. 15, at Bethesda Health Care in Cookeville.
Mrs. Wright was born May 20, 1913, in White County, to the late Mansfield and Maggie Jane holder Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lesel, Willie, Haskel, Thurman, and Herman; and sisters, Lola, Lela, Effie, and Edna.
She was married to the late William Hershel “Jack” Wright for 74 years and was a member of the Springhill the Baptist Church since 1924.

James Thomas Geer, Jr.

James Thomas Geer, Jr., 69, of Coalbank Road in Sparta, passed from this life, on Dec. 17, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Geer was born in Coxton, Ky., on April 20, 1941, the son of the late James Thomas and Ruthie Pearl Barker Geer.
He was a retired assembly set up man at Thomas Industries.
He was the husband of Bonnie Dishman Geer.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Commissioners hear results of Beer Board inquiries

Minutes from the recent meeting of White County Beer Board have confirmed the times and days for beer sales in the county must now coincide with those of City of Sparta.
County commissioners have been investigating Tennessee laws in the past several weeks to determine if, in fact, beer sales outside the city limits would be affected by the newly-passed liquor-by-the-drink resolution in City of Sparta. Commissioners agreed they were “caught off-guard” when they were informed the county’s times and dates for legally selling beer were now under the authority of Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Wilma I. Savage, age 100, passed away, on Dec. 14, 2010, at Millers Merry Manor in Tipton, Ind.
Mrs. Savage was born, on Jan. 16, 1910, in Sparta, to Erastus and Minnie (Hutson) Goodwin.
On Sept. 13, 1926, Wilma married Clura George Savage and he preceded her in death on May 3, 1992.
She was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Sparta and the Church of Christ in Tipton, Ind.
She was employed at D.A. Murray in Tipton, Ind., retiring in 1971.

Cynthia Ann “Cindy” White, 50, of Lost Creek Road in Sparta, passed from this life, on Dec. 17, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. White was born in Melbourne, Fla., on December 22, 1959, the daughter of the late Jake and Connie (Thompson) Housman.
She was formerly employed at Mallory Timers, in Sparta.

William Ralph Hutson, 89, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2010, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Hutson was born on April 8, 1921, in the Cole’s Chapel community of White County, to William Finley Hutson and Millie Zula Hitchcock Hutson.
In l958, Mr. Hutson was one of the founding members of the West Sparta Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and an elder for many years. He loved this church and attended every service until his hospitalization on December 7, 2010.

Cora Bell Luna Wilmoth, age 92 passed away, on Dec. 17, 2010, at the Dekalb Community Hospital in Smithville, Tenn.
Mrs. Wilmoth was born, on Dec. 1, 1918, in Dekalb County, Tenn. to the late Mon and Armentie Young Luna.
She was also preceded in death by her husband George Finley Wilmoth; three sons Leonard Ray Wilmoth, Sr., William Thomas Wilmoth, and Earl Reed Wilmoth; and a daughter Linda Faye Bradley.
She is survived by her son Charles and wife Lorie Wilmoth of Sparta; daughter Brenda and husband David Matheney of Walling; 17 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
