THP supports C.O.P.S. ‘Project Blue Light’

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will once again partner with C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) this holiday season to encourage Tennesseans to display a blue light in home or office windows in remembrance of fallen law enforcement officers.
A blue light, candle or holiday decoration honors and remembers those law enforcement officers who have given their lives in service to their profession and thanks those who continue to work America’s dangerous streets and highways daily.

Single-vehicle crash injures one

The driver of this 1996 Volvo reportedly lost control of the vehicle and landed in a creek bed.

A single-vehicle crash, on Nov. 23, sent a White County man to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
According to Deputy Lanny Wheeler with White County Justice Center, George Schneider, 63, was traveling northbound on Hickory Valley Road in a blue 1996 Volvo.
Wheeler stated, for reasons yet to be determined, Schneider lost control, left the roadway and struck a guardrail before coming to a rest just before going over an embankment into a creek bed.

The ninth grade Warriors opened the season with a narrow 52-50 loss to visiting Cookeville on Monday.

Despite leading by as many as 20 in the second half of Tuesday’ game against Tullahoma, the Warriorettes had to withstand a late surge by the Lady Wildcats before they finished off the 60-46 win.

Two WCHS cross country runners traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina over Thanksgiving weekend to compete in the South Region Footlocker Championships.
Morgan Voyles and Alex Stover ran with the best of the best that the southeast has to offer and both came home with new PR’s to bring the 2010 cross country season to an end. This was the first time either of the two runners had competed in the Footlocker race.

Delma Mae Vance Young, 84, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 22, 2010, at Grace Healthcare, in Franklin.
Mrs. Young was born Sept. 16, 1926, in White County, to Lee and Maggie Adair Vance.
She was a retired sewing supervisor at Kellwood, in Sparta, and was a member of East Sparta Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Grover Cleveland Young.

Mary Louise Green, 86, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2010, at Alive Hospice’s Skyline Madison Campus.
Mrs. Green was born May 18, 1924, in Sparta, to Lee and Annie Daniels Harris.
She was a member of Taft Church of Christ.
Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Willene Green; and a son, Shirley Green Jr.
Survivors include three sons, John Green and Charles Green, both of Sparta, Lloyd Green, of Indiana; daughters, Gladys Green, of Sparta; two sisters, Misty McDonald and Birtye Yates, both of Doyle; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Virginina Ruth Halfacre, 83, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Halfacre was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Jackson County, to Felix Dow Alcorn and Jonnie Vada Gibson-Alcorn.
She was a homemaker and member of Heavenly Host Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Halfacre was preceded in death by her husband, Audie Raymond Halfacre; her parents; a daughter, Donna Faye Halfacre; a brother, Marvin Alcorn; and a sister, Alta Alcorn-Halfacre.

Melba Ledbetter Sewell, 90, of Athens, passed away Nov. 29, 2010, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sewell was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Clay County, to Bennie Chester and James Lurinda Ledbetter.
On Jan. 25, 1937, she eloped with Willie Roy Sewell to whom she was married 53 years before Mr. Sewell preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1990.
Mrs. Sewell was an active member of the Athens Church of Christ where she was affectionately known as “Granny Sewell.” She devoted herself to a card ministry with which she gave love and encouragement to family and dear friends.

Minnie Frances Shockley, 80, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 18, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Shockley was born April 5, 1930, to Clifford Cowan and Eliza Strawyer Cowan.
Survivors include her grandson, Robert Gist; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mattie Underwood, of Gallatin, Annie Tucker, of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., Nov. 21, 2010, at Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Doyle Cemetery. Lewis Carrick officiated.

Patsy Elizabeth Mann

Patsy Elizabeth Mann, 76, passed away Nov. 28, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Mann was born Jan. 30, 1934, in Frederick, Md., to Alva Edison Young and Ida Virginia Keeney Young.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Sparta, for 43 years.
Mrs. Mann was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Glenn (Bucky) Young.
