James Henry Wilson, 83, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 21, 2011, at Life Care Center of Sparta
Mr. Wilson was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Sparta, Ike and Grace Hutchings Wilson.
He worked many years at Thomas Industries, in Sparta.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Willine Wilson; and a sister, Marie Dodson.

‘Energy Audit’ available to help save utility costs

Recent temperatures that dropped down into the teens and single digits was the key factor that prompted Sparta’s electric system director to encourage homeowners, as well as renters, to fill out an ‘Energy Audit’ to find out ways to curtail those expensive heating costs.
L.R. West addressed Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its Jan. 20, 2011, meeting and urged them to spread the word about the free service that is available on the TVA Web site.
West said December 2010 was the fourth coldest December on record, and many individuals are facing high utility bills because of the unusually frigid weather.

E-911 board appointment questioned

Debbie Sopha told fellow aldermen during a Jan. 20 meeting she had two “main concerns,” one of which was why Mayor Jeff Young made an appointment to E-911 Board of Directors without the final approval of the city board members.
Sopha said she had written a letter to City Administrator Marty Carmichael about the reported action, and Carmichael immediately contacted her about the matter. Sopha also read a letter she had received from Ron Darden, consultant with Municipal Technical Advisory Service.
“You cannot appoint no one to the 911 Board without the Board’s approval,” said Sopha, as she addressed the mayor.

James Lloyd Selby, 75, passed way Jan. 22, 2011, at DeKalb Community Hospital.
Mr. Selby was a member of New Life United Pentecostal Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a job-setter with General Motors for 32 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Beulah England Selby; three sisters, Louise Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Helen Baker; and two brothers, C.B. Noel Selby, Gene Selby.

Carrie Mae Denton, 65, a resident of Sparta, passed away Jan. 21, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Denton was born Jan. 27, 1945, in Campbell County, to Charlie and Lillie Welden McGill.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Denton was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herman Denton.

Wilma Aaron Moore, 82, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 22, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Moore was born Aug. 11, 1928, in Decaturville, to Edward and Flossie Welch Aaron.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Maurice Moore; and a sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Amy Johnson and husband Tim, of Sparta; son, Maurice (Reece) Moore, of Jacksonville, Ala.; sister, JoAnn Aaron-Crosby, of Florida; five grandchildren, Jessica, Jenni and Joel Johnson, Riley and Ryan Moore; and three great-grandchildren, Chloe, Caden and Carter.

Banquet set for Feb. 4

Food, fun, fellowship and fundraising are set as the main events at the Annual Hunting Heritage Super Fund banquet, hosted by the White County Limbstrutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NTWF), beginning at 5 p.m., on Feb. 4, at the White County Agricultural Complex.
The fundraising event provides much-needed funds for special hunts, including the organization’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen Hunt that re-introduces the beauty and excitement of the outdoors to disabled people confined to wheelchairs, as well as their efforts to conserve wild turkey populations and preserve America’s hunting heritage.

Beatrice (Bea) Margeson Marcum, 84 of Sparta, passed away Jan. 21, 2011, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Mrs. Marcum was born June 9, 1926, in Van Buren County, to Lewis David Margeson and Emma Louise Wheeler Margeson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 50 years, John Ray Marcum; sisters, Alma D. Armstrong, Mary Tinney Vance, Kathlene Margeson; and brothers, Herbert Margeson, Lewis Margeson Jr., Roy Thomas (Bud) Margeson and Donald Margeson.

Charles Edward Brown, 67, of Waterford, Mich., passed Jan. 18, 2011 in Michigan.
Mr. Brown was born June 15, 1943, in Sparta, to Beecher and Louella Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Brown; children, Robin Coe and husband Russ, Jodi Pridmore and husband Todd, Megan Brown; grandchildren, Emily, Audrey, Chelsea, Bethany; four sisters; and one brother.
Funeral service was 1 p.m., Jan. 23, 2011, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Corinth Cemetery. Tom McCulley officiated.

Butterfinger Fudge

Butterfinger Fudge

1 (12 oz.) pkg. semisweet chocolate chips
1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup (16 pieces) mini Butterfinger bars, chopped
Butter an 8-inch square baking pan. Line with enough wax paper to hang over 2 sides by 2 inches. In a pot, combine chips and milk over medium heat, cook, stirring constantly until mixture is melted and smooth. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla extract. Cool 1 minute. Stir in candy bars, reserving one-third of it for the top. Spread mixture evenly in pan. Sprinkle remaining candy on top. Refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours. Use wax paper to … CONTINUED

Mrs. Roberts was born Jan. 25, 1936, in Elizabethton, to Johnny and Ruby Robison Bare.
She was a retired factory worker from Mallory Timers.
Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her parents; son, Barry Frasier; brothers, Jack and Johnny Bare; and granddaughter, Hannah Kate Stang.
