Dollie Sparks Law, 47, of Sparta, passed away April 27, 2011, at her residence.
Mrs. Law was born Jan. 18, 1964, in White County, to John D. and Vernell Miller Sparks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Charlene Margeson; and brothers, John Lee Sparks and Charles Thomas Sparks.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Jimmy Law, of Sparta; daughters, Karen Sparks, of Liberty, Jessica Law Cantrell and husband Tony Cantrell II, of Wickliffe, Ky.; sister, Shirley Usrey, of Sparta; grandchildren, Deidra Sparks, Preston Cummings, Savara Cantrell; and several nieces and nephews.

Softball sweeps Cookeville

Hannah Roberts is greeted at home plate by her teammates after her second inning solo home rum at Cookeville.

The Warriorette softball team completed the regular season district sweep of their archrivals Thursday with a 3-2 win at Cookeville.
WCHS built an early 3-0 lead and then held off the Lady Cavaliers for the 3-2 win. The Warriorettes host Warren County Tuesday in the final regular district game with second place on the line.
The Warrior baseball team lost their shot at third place in the regular season with a 6-5 loss to Warren County. The Warriors built a 4-0 lead, but couldn’t hold on as the Pioneers … Read More

Samuel Titus (Sammy) Sullivan, 65, of Spencer, passed away April 28, 2011, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Sullivan was born Feb. 1, 1946, in Van Buren County, to Henry and Oma Williams Sullivan.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., May 1, 2011, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Molloy Cemetery. The family will receive friends 8 a.m.-2 p.m., May 1, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Frances Miller, 80, of Sparta, passed away April 27, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Ms. Miller was born May 1, 1930, in Van Buren County, to Sam and Rosetta Brock Miller.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., April 29, 2011, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Davis Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m., April 29.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Some 6AAA seeding still up in the air

From last to second. Jonathan Griffin and the Warrior tennis team may have garnered the number two spot for the coming District 6AAA tournament. If so, they will have improved from last to second over a year’s span. All spring sports teams are headed toward post season play with approximately a week of regular season action remaining.

As the close of the regular season for spring sports draws near, some spots from the coming District 6AAA tournaments have been decided while others are still up in the air.

Commissioners reject planning commission recommendations

Four names submitted by the county executive to serve on White County Planning Commission were rejected by a majority vote during a recent meeting.
Nine commissioners cast a “no” vote when presented with the names of Ralph Griffith, Gary McBride, Jeff Wilson and Clifford Templeton. The terms for each of these individuals would expire in April 2015.
However, the resolution failed for lack of a majority vote. The casting “no” votes included Bruce Null, B.K. Luna, Diana Haston, Hank Clark, Paul Bailey, Jerry Austin, Andy Alley, Terry Alley and Marion Bumbalough. Those voting “yes” were Joe B. England, Matt McBride, Al Klee and Wallace Austin. 11.6 percent unemployment rate reported

White Countians may once again have a spark of hope with the recent release of the county-by-county unemployment figures.
According to Tennessee Department of Labor, White County has an 11.6 percent jobless rate for March 2011, down from 12.2 percent in February.
When taking a broader look at the past two years, the unemployment rate for March 2011 is the fourth lowest.
The year began with a jobless rate of 14.1 percent, in January, but decreased almost two percentage points in February. As March’s numbers were calculated, the figure of 11.6 percent provided a hopeful outlook for the upcoming summer months.

Two men arrested after stabbing

Two men were arrested, on April 24, after they were reportedly involved in an altercation that left one of them with a knife wound in the lower abdomen.
At approximately 9 p.m., on April 23, White County Sheriff Deputy William Whitson was dispatched to a residence on Waymon Mason Road, about a stabbing, according to a report by Whitson.
When he arrived, he reportedly found Daniel Christophe Burgess, 22, of Sparta, lying on the porch of a nearby residence, being treated by an off-duty paramedic.

Softball falls in extra innings

Throwing to first. Warriorette pitcher, Kristen Abell, throws to first baseman, Olivia Link, for an out in a recent WCHS softball game. Link was one of six seniors honored prior to the game.

The Warriorette softball team honored their seniors prior to Monday’s non-district contest with Livingston and then proceeded to battle it out in an extra inning game.
Livingston’s two runs in the top of the eighth proved to be enough for the win as the Lady Wildcats defeated the Warriorettes 6-4.
WCHS had to overcome a 3-0 deficit to even make the extra innings possible.
