Thomas (Tom) Hunt Morrill Jr., 59, of Sparta, passed away May 25, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Morrill was born June 4, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Thomas Hunt Morrill Sr. and Marcella Brickman Morrill.
He served his country as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy and later retired after 20 years from the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler in Cleveland, Ohio.

Earl Eugene Knowles, 78, of White County, passed away May 29, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Knowles was born May 28, 1933, in White County, to Willie M. and Liza Lou Roberts Knowles.
He served in the U.S. Army
Mr. Knowles was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles R., James T., and Royce E. Knowles; one sister, Willie A. Irwin; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lightning starts storage-building fire

Lightning. This outbuilding, located on Garrett Road, is cleared of smoke by firefighters, after it caught fire when lightning ran down the tree in the foreground and into the building.

Quick response by firefighters kept a Garrett Road resident from losing a storage building, on May 26, after lightning struck a nearby tree, causing a fire in the outdoor structure.
Firefighters with Doyle and Central View volunteer fire departments were dispatched to the scene, at approximately 10 a.m., and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Shirley Joyce Stewart

Shirley Joyce Stewart, 56, of Sparta, passed May 27, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Ms. Stewart was born Jan. 7,1955 in Waco, Texas, to Howell D. Glover and Evelyn Hensley Youngman.
Survivors include her daughter, Shannown Walbourn, of Sparta; mother, Evelyn Hensley Youngman, of Sparta; brothers, Alen Keith Hebstreith, of Sparta; Stepfather, John Youngman, of Sparta; father and stepmother, Howell D. and Ruth Glover, of Johnson City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service was 11 a.m., May 28, 2011, at Hunter Funeral Home. Robert Wright officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Frederick Kovacik Jr., 1962-2011

Thomas Frederick Kovacik Jr., 49, of Cookeville and formerly of Grass Lake, Mich., passed away May 27, 2011, in Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville
Mr. Kovacik was born April 12, 1962, in Detroit, Mich., to Thomas Frederick Kovacik Sr. and Lucille Theresa Gurley Kovacik, of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and former long-time residents of Sparta.
He was a homebuilder.
Mr. Kovacik was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Bergman Kovacik.

Jimmy Writtenberry

Jimmy Writtenberry, 68, of Sparta, passed away May 27, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Writtenberry was born Sept. 9, 1942, in Sparta, Dolph Rittenberry and late Rosie-Williams Rittenberry.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include son, James E. Writtenberry; daughter-in-law, Natalie M. Writtenberry; grandchildren, Steven Writtenberry, Jaclyn Writtenberry, Jacob Writtenberry; and very special friends, Jonelda and Kenny Graham.
Funeral services will be graveside, at 10 a.m., June 1, 2011, at Old Blue Springs Cemetery. Art Brockett will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Cullom was born July 28, 1946, in Sparta, toSmith and Hattie B. Hooker Cullom.
Survivors include her son, Marlon Cullom, of Hampton, Va.;

Clyde Junior Blaylock

Clyde Junior Blaylock, 83, of Sparta, passed away May 28, 2011, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Blaylock was born Feb. 28, 1928, in the Clifty community of White County, to Jess and Callie Dodd Blaylock.
He worked as a welder for General Motors where he retired after 31 years of service. Mr. Blaylock was also the retired manager of Elmwood and Hearthwood apartments.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Muriel Underwood Blaylock; and four brothers, Leon Blaylock, Carl Blaylock, Earl Blaylock and Lonnie Blaylock.

$20,000 grant presented to White Co. American Legion

Signing. American Legion Commander Herman Hill puts his signature on the paperwork to obtain a USDA Rural Development grant. Chris Hampton, USDA area specialist, assists with the final step in securing $20,000.

American Legion officials were recently presented with a USDA Rural Development grant that will help offset the cost of installing an elevator in the 80-year-old building where veterans gather regularly for meetings and other activities.

11.6 % unemployment third highest April in 25 years

White County Unemployment Rates

White County appears to be at a temporary standstill in the ranks of unemployment numbers as the latest figures reveal an unchanged rate from March to April.
The latest county-by-county unemployment figures were release May 26, 2011, with White County sitting on 11.6 percent. This number is down from one year ago, when 12.1 percent was reported for April 2010.
When ranking the rates for the month of April for the past 25 years, April 2011 hits the list in third place. April 2009 was the highest, with 14.8 percent, followed by April 2010, at 13.1 percent. Number 25 on the list was April … Read More

Makes 6 servings

1 box Dreamfields Rotini
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
4 teaspoons olive oil, divided
1 pork tenderloin (about 1 pound), trimmed (cut into 1-inch pieces)
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
1 1/2 cups reduced-sodium, fat free chicken broth
1 1/4 cups prepared salsa verde
1 can (about 15 ounces) black beans, rinsed, drained, optional
6 lime wedges
Chopped avocado, optional
Light sour cream, optional

Mrs. Bennett was born Aug. 27, 1926, in Pelham, to William Harrison and Ollie Garner Patterson.
She was a certified nursing assistant.
Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Bennett, and brothers, John Alton and Haskell Patterson.
