Missing girls may be in Sparta area

An East and Middle Tennessee Endangered Child Alert has been issued by Tennessee Bureau of Investigations for the Maryville Police Department for a 12-year-old girl, Alexis Sullivan.
TBI officials state Sullivan is in the company of Brittany Mostella and Shelby Nunley. All three children are missing from the Johnson Group Home in Maryville, Tenn.
Mostella and Nunley have reportedly made threats toward Sullivan after they ran from the group home.
The girls may be armed with a pair of scissors that were found to be missing from the home.

I saw on ESPN’s website late Monday night that Lorenzo Charles had been killed in a bus accident.
Most of you reading this might not recognize the name Lorenzo Charles, but if you follow the NCAA men’s basketball championship tournament, you have seen him many, many times.
Charles was the one who caught Derrick Whittenburg’s air ball and dunked it through as time expired in the 1983 national championship game against the high flying Phi Slamma Jamma aka the Houston Cougars. Two injured in mid-day crash

Damaged vehicles. Officer David Grissom can be seen in the foreground marking the roadway where the vehicle came to a final rest, while emergency personnel work to get the driver of the other car in the background out of the vehicle and into a waiting ambulance.

Two White County women were injured in a two-vehicle crash, on June 29, at approximately 11:40 a.m., at the intersection of Highway 111 and Walker Cove Road.
According to Patrolman David Grissom with Sparta Police Department, Wynett Joy Maynard, 51, was driving northbound on Highway 111 in a black 2009 Nissan Altima.

Floella Marie Burden McDole

Floella Marie Burden McDole passed away, on June 28, 2011, at Riverpark Hospital in McMinnville.
She was born on August 17,1926, to Henry and Bertha Sapp Burden in White County.
Mrs. McDole was a member of the Church of Christ. She was a retired health care giver and enjoyed her gardening and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Paul Kopecky; four brothers Ray, Melvin, Jesse and Carl Burden; three sisters Carrie Burden, Notie Herd and Lorene Dennison.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and church family, as well as special friends Steve and Jill Stubblefield.

Robbery suspects found hiding in Cookeville

David Allan Walker, 31, of Cookeville; and Elizabeth Marie Walker, 35, of Cookeville.

Investigation. Investigators with Sparta Police Department search for clues at the site of an attempted robbery at Kwik Kash Pawnshop, on North Spring Street in Sparta. The two perpetrators were reportedly arrested in Cookeville approximately 24 hours after the incident.

9/10 All Stars fall in opener

First All Star team to swing into action. Sparta Little League’s 9/10 Live Arm All Star team was the first to swing into action. They suffered a 10-4 loss to DeKalb County. This team will return to action Thursday and Friday also in Carthage. The other All Star teams begin play next week.

Sparta Little League’s 9/10 year old live-arm All Star baseball team was the first of the hometown’s five glitter teams to hit the diamond.
The Stars opened pool play Monday night in Carthage against DeKalb County and were defeated 10-4.

Winning design. Krystal boxes like this will be showing up later this summer and early fall at Krystal restaurants all across the nation after Janey Gregory, a Sparta resident and the box’s designer, was chosen as a winner in the restaurant chain’s “Design a Box Contest.”

Sparta resident, Janey Gregory, was chosen as a Judge’s Choice Winner in the nationwide Krystal “Design a Box” contest, and her winning design will be featured throughout Krystal restaurants later this summer and early fall.

Babe Ruth announces All Star teams

The Sparta Babe Ruth League will field two All Star teams this year, a 14-year old and a 15-year old.
The 14’s will be managed by Ken Temple, who will be assisted by Jason Cloyd, Tim Smith and Charlie Glenn.
Members of the team are: Ian Temple, Ty Cloyd, Colton Hudgens, Darin Cole, Tyler Brock, Garrett Turner, Jacob Bryant, Logan Merriman, Auston Glenn, Zack Flatt and Allen Frazier.
The 14 year old team will begin play Thursday, July 7th, at 7:30 p.m. against Livingston at Parkview fields in Cookeville. The winner of that game will play Cookeville on Friday the 8th.

Corey Duane Paul, 35, of Nashville, passed away on June 24, 2011, in Nashville.
Mr. Paul served in the U.S. Army and was self-employed.

J. P. Whiteaker, 85, of Sparta, passed away, on June 26, 2011, at Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville.
He was born May 15, 1926, in White County, to the late Mell David and Rhoda Weaver Whiteaker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Richardson Whiteaker.
He is survived by his sister, Christine Clouse, of Sparta, and brother, Cleo Whiteaker, both of Sparta; niece Kathy Semore and nephew David Whiteaker.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., on June 29, 2011, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bobby Wilhite will be officiating.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m., on June 28, 2011.

Ruby Kindelberger Fetzer passed away, on June 29, 2011, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mrs. Fetzer was born in Park Rapids, Minn., on July 23, 1922, the daughter of the late William and Anna Kindelberger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herbert Nicholas Fetzer, three brothers, Verle Kindelberger, Dale Kindelberger and Dean Kindelberger; two sons-in-law, Perry Henderson and Kendell Bell.

Charlie Lee Graham, Sr., 88, of Hernando, Fla., died on May 27, 2011, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County.
Mr. Graham was born on August 29, 1922, in Sparta, Tenn., to the late Willie and Trasda Graham and came to the Florida area in 1989 from Dayton, OH.
He was an educator in the Dayton school district as a teacher and principal for many years. He also served as the Director of Head Start for five years.

J. P. Whiteaker, 85, of Sparta, passed away, on June 26, 2011, at Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville.

Unemployment in White County remains at 11.6%

White County jobless rates for May 2011 are holding at the same numbers recorded in April.
According to figures released by Tennessee Department of Labor, White County is listed at 11.6 percent unemployment. This number is higher than May 2010, which was 11.3 percent.
Since 2000, the highest jobless rate for May was in 2009, at 15.1 percent; followed by 2010, at 12.5 percent; and 2011, with 11.6 percent. The lowest unemployment figures during the same time span was May 2000, at 4.1 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment figure for May 2011 was 9.7 percent. Unemployment rates decreased in 54 counties, increased in 24 and remained the same in … Read More
