Little League All Star teams named

Ready for All Star action. Brady Lawson is one of the young baseball players from Little League that is preparing for All Star tournament action.

On championship day of the Little League City Tournament, the local All Star teams were also announced.
Due to lack of interest in All Star play this season, Sparta Little League will only field three All Star teams. There will be a 7&8 year old Coaches’ Pitch/Tee Ball team, a 10-year old pitching machine team and a 9/10 Live Arm team. All three are baseball teams.

Synthetic drug law became effective on May 5

A law banning the sale of synthetic drugs that have been readily available at some area stores has been signed by the governor and went into effect May 5, 2011.
Although most laws that were recently passed during the 2010-2011 session of Tennessee General Assembly would have become effective July 1, 2011, law enforcement officials rallied state legislators and the governor to quickly process this bill because of the dangers these drugs were presenting to the public.
Sold under names such as “Molly’s Plant Food” and “bath salts,” these products, which contain synthetic drugs, have reportedly been responsible for the deaths of numerous individuals across the United States.… Read More

Two locals headed to National Senior games

The White County High School basketball teams are not the only hoopsters that have been working on their games and fine tuning their games.
Two basketball players from Doyle have been practicing in preparation for the national stage. Sylvia Smith and Marie Savage, members of the Tennessee Amigos, have gotten their final practices in the books and are heading out for Houston, Texas Saturday to compete in the Summer National Senior Games. They will be competing in the 65+ 3-on-3 basketball tournament and trying to earn another gold medal.

George Henery Argerbright

George Argerbright, 88 of Sparta, formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind., passed away June 8, 2011, at the White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Argerbright was born June 13, 1922.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Emerson Argerbright; son, Steven Argerbright; and great-granddaughter Chloe Hall.

Clyde Spivey, 80, of Sparta, passed away June 14, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Spivey was born April 29, 1931, in White County, to Bedford and Rose Emerton Spivey.
He was a retired brick and block mason.
Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Darlene Steele, Liddie Rose Marie Spivey; sisters, Virginia Ann Presley, Wilma Dean Parks Brady, Dorothy Fish; and brothers, Elzie Spivey, Elton Spivey and Ollie Spivey.

Geer advances in Schooldays golf tourney

Advancing in Schooldays tourney. Allison Geer, a rising senior at WCHS, finished tied for fourth during the qualifying round of the 87th annual Schooldays Golf Tournament in Nashville. That advanced Geer onto the match play round on Wednesday.

Four of White County’s young golfers threw their names in the hunt for the oldest junior golf title in the state this week.

E-911 approves lease of generator

The White County E-911 Board voted, on June 13, to lease a used generator to White County Emergency Medical Services for 99 years for $1.
The motion also included the requirement that WCEMS is to be responsible for all maintenance of the generator.
The motion came after a request last month from WCEMS to be able to use the generator as a back up for the ambulance service’s computers and other vital electronic equipment.
The Board considered giving the equipment to WCEMS but an opinion by the Tennessee Attorney General advised any such transaction should be consummated through an exchange at “fair market value.”

Earl Sims loves all the attention he gets from his family, especially on his birthday, on June 16, and Father’s Day, on June 19. Sims shares his birthday with one of his four children, Earlayne Sims Cantrell. Hyder, former owner of Hyder’s 5 & 10, in Sparta, is excited about the new store and all it has to offer to its customers. Dollar Tree is in West Town Plaza, adjacent to the old Walmart location.


‘Cyber bullying’ bill added to TN harrassment law

A new bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Bill Haslam, on May 30, amends Tennessee law governing harassment to require Internet service providers to “open to inspection” all images or communications to municipal, county and state law enforcement officials during “ongoing investigations or prosecutions.”
The amendment affects change in several parts of Tennessee’s harassment law, TCA 39-17-308.
Subsection (d)(3)(A), which was created by the bill, states “communications shall only be open to inspection by the Internet service provider if the district attorney reasonably believes:
(i) The information sought is not protected from disclosure by any applicable privilege;

Ruby Ann Young Phifer, 67, of Quebeck, passed away June 15, 2011, at her residence.
Mrs. Phifer was born July 16, 1943, to Clarence Haston Young and Lassie Denton Young.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Horace E. Young.
Survivors include her husband Edward Ray Phifer, of Quebeck; one daughter, Candy Fowler and husband Jerry, of Sparta; grandchildren, Kayla Rogers and husband Shane, Chad Fowler and wife Lauren; great-grandchildren, Lane Rogers, Reagan Fowler; sisters, Betty Clemons, of Sparta, Virginia Goodwin and husband Joel of Mt.
