Charles Curtis Young Sr.

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Charles Curtis Young Sr., 67, of Sparta, passed away June 16, 2011, at Erlanger Hospital, in Chattanooga.
Mr. Young was born Oct. 1, 1943, in Windsor, Ind., to James Edward Young Jr. and Minnie Lorene Dodson Staver.
He was a truck driver and an U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Young was preceded in death by parents and a sister, Elaine Beatty.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Young, of Sparta; eight children, Leesa Myers and husband Patrick, of Jackson, Ga., Charles Young and wife Ruby, of Jackson, Ga., Vernon Anderson and wife Janette, of Sparta, James Young and wife Heather, … CONTINUED


Little League All Star teams named

Ready for All Star action. Brady Lawson is one of the young baseball players from Little League that is preparing for All Star tournament action.

On championship day of the Little League City Tournament, the local All Star teams were also announced.
Due to lack of interest in All Star play this season, Sparta Little League will only field three All Star teams. There will be a 7&8 year old Coaches’ Pitch/Tee Ball team, a 10-year old pitching machine team and a 9/10 Live Arm team. All three are baseball teams.

Babe Ruth teams wrap up regular season

Driving in the game winners. Bobby Farris Jr. drove in the game winning runs as the Yankees defeated the Braves 9-8 in the Babe Ruth regular season finale. The City Tournament begins Monday with the Yankees taking on the Dodgers. The tournament continues Thursday with the championship game scheduled for Friday.

The five-team Sparta Babe Ruth League wrapped up regular season play Thursday with a twinbill.
The final regular season game that was slated for Saturday was rained out.
The final game of the 2011 regular season slate proved to be a thriller. The Yankees came from behind to take a 9-8 victory over Braves.

Lightning starts fire at Washington St. home

Lightning damage. Firefighters check to make sure the fire, started by lightning, has been contained. The fire caused heavy damage to the Washington Street residence.

Lightning struck a propane tank attached to an outdoor grill on a carport of a Washington Street residence, on June 15, causing the tank to explode and the structure to catch fire.
According to E-911 records, firefighters with North End and Cassville volunteer fire departments, as well as Sparta Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene, at 5:31 p.m., and when they arrived approximately 6 minutes later, found the structure 25 percent involved.

Arzella Turrington Anderson, 86, of McMinnville, formerly of Sparta, passed away June 18, 2011, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Ms. Anderson was born April 11, 1925, in White County, to Charlie Crockett Turrington and Buna Reece Turrington.
She was retired from Sparta Shirt Factory.
Ms. Anderson was preceded in death by her husbands, Kelly Ted Anderson, Stanton Ray Manus; brothers Odus Turrington, Herman Turrington, Johnny Earl Turrington; and sisters, Clara Mae Ashburn, Molly Scott and Anna Ruth Ash.
Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Ann Anderson Hassell and husband Earl, of Greenwood, Ind., Martha Jean Anderson Conley, Betty Ruth Anderson Hall and husband Bill, Carolyn Sue Manus Ashburn … CONTINUED


William Balas Sparkman

William Balas Sparkman, 86, of Doyle passed away June 17, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Sparkman was born Feb. 20, 1925, in White County, to James Ernest and Lillie Mae Webster Sparkman.
He was retired from the State of Tennessee Forestry Division and was a veteran serving as a Ship’s Cook Third Class in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Sparkman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Ida Beatrice Dodson Sparkman; brother Levon Sparkman; and sister Elizabeth Sparkman.

George Henery Argerbright

George Argerbright, 88 of Sparta, formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind., passed away June 8, 2011, at the White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Argerbright was born June 13, 1922.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Emerson Argerbright; son, Steven Argerbright; and great-granddaughter Chloe Hall.

McGlothlin speaks out about shooting range

Two business partners, one who resides in White County and the other in Putnam County, are “up in arms” about the recent controversy surrounding their proposal to locate a shooting range on Claude Loftis Road.

Two locals headed to National Senior games

The White County High School basketball teams are not the only hoopsters that have been working on their games and fine tuning their games.
Two basketball players from Doyle have been practicing in preparation for the national stage. Sylvia Smith and Marie Savage, members of the Tennessee Amigos, have gotten their final practices in the books and are heading out for Houston, Texas Saturday to compete in the Summer National Senior Games. They will be competing in the 65+ 3-on-3 basketball tournament and trying to earn another gold medal.

Geer advances in Schooldays golf tourney

Advancing in Schooldays tourney. Allison Geer, a rising senior at WCHS, finished tied for fourth during the qualifying round of the 87th annual Schooldays Golf Tournament in Nashville. That advanced Geer onto the match play round on Wednesday.

Four of White County’s young golfers threw their names in the hunt for the oldest junior golf title in the state this week.
The 87th annual Tennessean/Metro Parks and Recreation Schooldays Tournament teed off Tuesday at the McCabe Golf Course in Nashville. A field of more than 220 boys and girls between the ages of 12-17 competed in the event. Tuesday was a qualifying stroke-play round with the low 16 … CONTINUED

Hyder, former owner of Hyder’s 5 & 10, in Sparta, is excited about the new store and all it has to offer to its customers. Dollar Tree is in West Town Plaza, adjacent to the old Walmart location.
