Funeral service for John (Jack) G. Lees Jr., 85, was, July 27, 2011, from the chapel of Cookeville Funeral Home, with burial in the Lost Creek Cemetery, in White County. Bro. Ernie Frederick officiated. Pallbearers were family and friends.
Mr. Lees went home to be with the Lord, on July 22, 2011, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Lees was born Oct.16, 1925, in Allegheny County, Pa., to John G. Lees Sr. and Margaret Quigley Lees.

William Kyle Maasen, 23, of Lebanon, passed away July 23, 2011.
Kyle was the oldest son of Bill and Lori Lee Maasen.
He grew up in Lebanon and was involved in local sports, including baseball and basketball. He was a member of Westland United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Thomas (Johnny) Lee Jr., and uncle, John Thomas Lee III.

Ms. Boyer was born March 22, 1945, n Detroit, Mich., to Lanard and Iona Hardin Smith.
A memorial service will be noon, July 30, 2011, at Burgess Falls State Park.

Virginia Ruth Bumbalough Howell, 83, of Sparta, passed July 26, 2011, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Howell was born April 20, 1928, in White County, to Ora Lee and Hassie Eller Bumbalough.
She was of the Baptist Faith and a long-term member of Delray Baptist Church of Steel Road, in Rossville, Ga.
Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles Edward Bumbalough and William Buster Bumbalough.

Warrior football team in midst of two-a-days

Making a catch. Warrior senior tight end, Zach Price, goes up and makes a catch against Upperman during 7-on-7 drills Tuesday at Warrior Stadium. The Warriors finish two-a-days before the pads go on Monday.

The Warrior football team is just days away from putting on the pads and starting the full contact drills, but have been using this week to get in lots of extra work prior to that time.

White County recipient of Arts Commission grants

Students in White County will be the beneficiaries of funds provided from National Endowment for the Arts and by Tennesseans who purchase collegiate/university, personalized and specialty motor vehicle license plates.
Northfield Elementary School will receive $3,600 for “Around the World with Puppets and Stories.” Woodland Park’s $2,400 will fund “Folklore Around the World.”
According to Tennessee Department of Revenue’s Web site, the annual fee for a regular license plate is $21.50. However, those who choose specialty plates pay an additional cost.
Tennessee Arts Commission has three of its own specialty license plates. The cost for each plate is $56.50, with $30.75 of the additional $35 allocated to TAC.… Read More


Shooting autopsy results may take months

No entry. The scene on July 22, 2011, at 351 Howard Spakes Rd., in Doyle, is filled with law enforcement vehicles and a “do not cross” tape to prevent anyone from entering the area where the shooting occurred.

An investigation of the July 22 shooting death involving officers with White County Sheriff Department and a 32-year-old Doyle man, who was wanted for failure to appear in court, is now under the complete control of Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and District Attorney General’s Office.

He was a wonderful father, husband, son and friend.

Cross country team in training

Getting ready to run. The WCHS cross country team has been running in preparation for their coming season. (L to R) Hannah McCoy, Ashlee Marcum and Ali Justus are shown above doing their training.

Members of the White County High School cross country team have spent a great deal of the summer preparing for the coming season and many have turned up that training since completion of the TSSAA mandated dead period.
Both Morgan Voyles and Alex Stover attended the Appalachian State Cross Country Camp held mid July on the school’s campus located in Boone, North Carolina. The duo ran approximately 40-45 miles for the week.

Mr. Hutson was born July 9, 1930, in White County, to Luther Virgil Hutson and Lola Mae Baker Hutson.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., July 28, 2011, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

QB Club BBQ and Auction set for August 6th

The annual Quarterback Club Barbecue and Auction will be Saturday, August 6th at the White County High School cafeteria.
The long-standing event is the major fundraiser for the Quarterback Club, which helps offset expenses incurred by the football team.
QB Club president, Allen Selby, talked about for what the funds raised by the club are used.

Quebeck Post Office on closure list

Closing? The Quebeck Post Office is on a list with 3,000 other such facilities across the United States that might be closing soon. The United States Postal Service reported an $8.5 billion loss during the 2010 fiscal year.

Residents of a rural community in White County may no longer have access to the small post office in their area because of an announcement about possible closures for more than 3,000 facilities across the United States.
The well-known landmark of Quebeck Post Office is on a list published by United States Postal Service as one the numerous locations across the country that may be closed because of budgetary issues. … Read More

Sales tax holiday Aug. 5-7

During this three-day weekend, consumers will not pay state or local sales tax on computers with a price of $1,500 or less.

White Countians are among the thousands of Tenneseans who will take advantage of the savings when shopping next weekend.
Tennessee’s sales tax holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m., Aug.5 and end at 11:59 p.m., Aug. 7. During this three-day weekend, consumers will not pay state or local sales tax on select clothing with a price of $100 or less per item, school and art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item, and computers with a price of $1,500 or less.
