Elevator funds approved

Historic building upgrades. The building, which now houses White County’s American Legion, should soon be getting an elevator installed to assist disabled and aging veterans reach the upper floors of the 79-year-old facility.

During recent White County Commission action, commissioners approved a resolution that would provide the remaining funds needed for the installation of an elevator at the American Legion building.
Resolution #66-06-11 allows for the borrowing of approximately $80,000 with repayment to be split between the county and the American Legion, with each making $4,000 annual payments, for a total of $8,000 annual payments.

Holiday fatalities not alcohol-related

The 78-hour July 4th holiday period will go down in Tennessee history books with the lowest number of fatalities since official records have been maintained for Department of Safety.
According to Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, seven deaths occurred during the 78-hour holiday period. Six counties were affected by the crashes, with two of the fatalities occurring in neighboring Warren County. Sullivan, Polk, Knox, Hardin and Hamilton counties were the locations of the remaining six fatalities.
Three of the six fatal crashes were single-vehicle crashes; three were multiple-vehicle crashes. None of the crashes were alcohol-related.

Babe Ruth 15’s headed to state

Sparta’s 15 year old Babe Ruth All Star team finished second in the district team and, in the process, earned a spot in the state tournament.
The 10-team state tournament starts Thursday in Fayetteville. Sparta finished second behind Cookeville, who handed the local team both losses in the tournament played in Jamestown.
Sparta found their way back to the championship game Monday night against Cookeville needing to beat their archrivals twice to earn the title, but having already won a spot in the state. The local team gave the undefeated team all they wanted in the title game, but fell short by a score of 9-6.

Terry Lee Hash

Terry Lee Hash, 71, of Quebeck, passed away July 7, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Hash was born March 12, 1940, in White County, to Elmer (Speed) and Nannie Lou Terry Hash.
He retired after 48 years with Thomas Industries.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Billy, Robert; and sisters, Dene Holder and Virginia Walden.
Survivors include his wife Pearl Simmons Hash, of Quebeck;
Daughter, Patty Dodson and husband James, of Quebeck; granddaughter, Kayla Sims; grandson; Jordan Dodson; brother, Tommy Hash; and sisters, Margaret Golden and Judy Luna.

Robert Reed Wright, 80, passed away July 6, 2011, at Woodbury Health Care Center, in Woodbury.
Mr. Wright born Aug. 8, 1930, in DeKalb County, to James Everett Wright and Effie Mae Henderson Wright.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thurman Wright, Clifton Wright, Othel Wright; and sisters, Claris Cope, Lois Vaughn, Mary O’Dell Clark, Beatrice Humphrey, and Ruth Geneva Wright.
He is survived by a loving sister, Opal Wright Wood, of Walling; two brothers, Larry McBride, of Rock Island, Garry McBride and wife Carolyn, of Smithville; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara Gail Wagoner, 55, of Sparta, passed away July 8, 2011, at White County Community Hospital
Miss Wagoner was born Nov. 13, 1955, in Houston, Texas, to Henry and Florence Hornberger Wagoner.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., July 11, 2011, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Eugene Lawson officiated.

Vivian Tennie Parks Spivey

Vivian Tennie Parks Spivey, 73, of Sparta, passed away July 11, 2011, at Erlanger Hospital, in Chattanooga.
Ms. Spivey was born July 7, 1938, in White County, to Fred and Florence Williams Parks.
She was a factory worker and employed at NHC Healthcare of Sparta for 15 years.
Ms. Spivey was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jessie Vaughn, Dixie Cunningham; brother, Buster Parks; two children, Liddle Rose Marie Spivey, Vivian Darlene Spivey Steele; and two grandchildren, O.V. Spivey, Bradley Alan Spivey.

Father Frederick John Schmit

Father Frederick John Schmit was born on July 7, 1920, in Port Washington, Wis. He was one of six children born to Alfred and Anastasia (nee Paulus) Schmit.
After completing St. Mary’s Elementary School in his hometown, he attended Salvatorian Seminary, in St. Nazianz, where he became acquainted with the Society. After completing four years of high school and two years of college, he studied at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, in St. Louis, Mo., for one year of philosophy studies. In September of 1940, he returned to St. Nazianz and entered the Society’s Novitiate, where he made his profession of vows on Sept. 8, 1941. He then completed … CONTINUED

Mr. Lautzenheiser was born July 26, 1944, in Canton, Ohio, to Ralph E. and Betty Jean McKeen Lautzenheiser.

Mrs. Massa was born Nov. 17, 1918, in White Co., to Everett D. and Cordelia Sherrell Fowler.

Lando Earl Trobaugh, 71, of Sparta, passed away July 1`0, 2011, at his home, in Cassville.
Mr. Trobaugh was born Dec. 22, 1939, in Baxter, to James Ira and Mary Hise Trobaugh.
He served his country in the U.S. Army, in 1958.
Mr. Trobaugh was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosalie (Rosie) M. Trobaugh; daughter, Gail Celeste Havens; three brothers; and four sisters.

Sparta’s 10 and under Little League pitching machine All Star team continued their tournament play with pool play games on Friday and Saturday and came away with a split.
After having a game rained out on Thursday, they defeated Lebanon 12-2 on Friday. Things didn’t go as well on Saturday as they fell to Smith County Red 11-9.
Sparta jumped out to the early lead on Friday with five runs in the first inning. … CONTINUED
