Caldwell brothers granted new trial

The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed the decisions of two lower courts and granted a re-trial for brothers Randall William Caldwell and Stephen Wilson Caldwell, who were convicted in August 1995 for the first-degree felony murder of 74-year-old Luther Gist, aggravated arson and conspiracy to commit arson.
Gist’s body was found, on Dec. 8, 1994, inside his home after emergency personnel responded to a structure fire in the Gum Spring community. He had died from smoke inhalation as the residence burned to the ground.

The 4th of July. The holiday that signifies the midway point of summer vacation for the kids, but most importantly the most proud of American holidays.

Voyles overall female winner of Fiddler 5k

Fiddler’s 5k. Morgan Voyles (first from left) was the female winner of the Fiddler 5k in Smithville on Saturday. Two of her high school teammates, Hunter McCoy (second from right) and Hannah McCoy (right), also ran in the event finishing third in their division. Ji Chong, a Voyles family friend from California, won his division. Another Sparta runner, Lora Simpson (not pictured) was the female winner of the Master’s Division (40+).

Even though it’s the dead period and a perfect chance to take some time off from running, Morgan Voyles and a couple of her high school teammates were having none of that.

9/10’s split final two pool play games

Combining for the win. Dyson Reece (above) and Jacob Guy combined to pitch Sparta’s 9/10 All Stars to a shut out win over Lebanon. Reece picked up the win striking out seven and allowing just three hits in three innings. The 9/10’s, however, saw their season end with two losses in pool play.

Sparta Little League’s 9/10 year old live arm All Stars split their final two games in pool play at the area tournament played in Carthage.
After dropping their opener, Sparta bounced back with a dominating 12-0 win over Lebanon Thursday. Sparta then wrapped up pool play with an 11-7 loss to Carthage Friday.

Roadside checkpoint to be held July 1 in White County

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a driver license roadside safety checkpoint, at 6 p.m., tonight, July 1, in White County.
In recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers, who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found that drivers license roadblocks are an effective means of enforcing driver license laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

Floella Marie Burden McDole passed away, on June 28, 2011, at Riverpark Hospital in McMinnville.
She was born on August 17,1926, to Henry and Bertha Sapp Burden in White County.
Mrs. McDole was a member of the Church of Christ. She was a retired health care giver and enjoyed her gardening and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Paul Kopecky; four brothers Ray, Melvin, Jesse and Carl Burden; three sisters Carrie Burden, Notie Herd and Lorene Dennison.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and church family, as well as special friends Steve and Jill Stubblefield.

Nannie Sara Elizabeth Whiteaker

Nannie Sara Elizabeth Whiteaker passed away, on June 30, 2011, at the Bethesda Health Care Center, in Cookeville.
Mrs. Whiteaker was born, on Dec. 26, 1923, to George Thomas and Sally Cox Whiteaker, in Putnam County.
She attended the Big Springs Church of Christ. She lived with her loving family until her illness and enjoyed working on the family farm and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Alfred Whiteaker.
She is survived by a loving sister, Bessie Whiteaker, of Sparta, and her church family.
