Geer headed back to state

Back to back trips to state. WCHS senior Allison Geer, shown above with Coach Eric Mitchell, earned her second straight trip to the TSSAA golf tournament with her performance in the region tournament earlier this week.

Rainy conditions on Monday made the going tough for the Region 3AAA golfers who were trying to earn spots in the TSSAA state tournament.
WCHS senior, Allison Geer, fought through the conditions and earned one of the final spots from this region in the state tournament. This will be the second trip to the state for Geer, who has already committed to Tennessee Tech.

The annual Liberty Square Celebration begins at 11:45 a.m., Oct. 8, in downtown Sparta, and will feature three well-known bluegrass bands, including Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Claire Lynch Band and Midnight Flight, as well as White County’s ‘hometown’, but nationally known, bluegrass stars, The Expedition Show.
Doyle Lawson is a living legend in bluegrass music and has been nominated in two categories in the upcoming 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards to be held in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center on October 28, 2011.

Student seriously injured in bus-stop incident

Steven Nicholas Young, 18, of White County

An 18-year-old male, Steven Nicholas Young, and a 15-year-old male, both of White County, face charges after they allegedly attacked another 15-year-old male, causing serious injuries to the juvenile victim’s eye.
According to  officials with White County Sheriff Department, Young was waiting nearby when the juveniles got off the bus on Crawford Circle, at approximately 3:18 p.m., on Sept. 26.
The alleged juvenile suspect reportedly told a deputy with WCSD “he punched a kid in the face when he got off the school bus because he called him names.”

The Lady Cavaliers got going early and often against the Warriorette soccer team during Monday’s District 6AAA contest.
The Cookeville team scored twice in the first minute of the contest and never looked back on the way to the dominating 8-0 win over White County High School.

Neighborhood Watch formed in Cassville

Neighborhood watch. White County detective Ruben Hormilla addresses a group of residents from Cassville about forming a neighborhood watch program. Hormilla and Sheriff Oddie Shoupe are offering to assist any neighborhood group that would like to start such a community program.

Members of the Cassville community recently formed a Neighborhood Watch in response to several reported burglaries and other suspicious activity in the area.
Residents met at the Cassville Volunteer Fire Department’s fire hall to get assistance with forming the community action group from Detective Ruben Hormilla with White County Sheriff Department and White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe.

Pot grow operation raided

All in a row. Young marijuana plants are lined up in perfect rows in a secret room discovered by officials with White County Sheriff Department. The plants and all associated equipment and materials were seized during the raid on the pot growing operation.

Officers with White County Sheriff Department and agents from the 15th Judicial Task Force, in Jackson County, executed a search warrant at 583 West Bethlehem Road, in White County, at approximately 5 p.m., on Sept. 23, and reportedly found an elaborate marijuana-growing operation, as well as more than three pounds of packaged marijuana.

Life Care Center of Sparta named Facility of the Year in Life Care’s Eastern Division

On Sept. 26, Life Care Center of Sparta was named Life Care Centers of America’s Eastern Division Facility of the Year.
The award was presented during Life Care Centers of America’s annual management meeting. It recognizes the facility as the premier location in Life Care’s Eastern Division, which includes 41 skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Criteria for this award include excellent customer service, positive financial performance, a strong activities department, an active volunteer program and involvement in the community.

Dimple Jean Brymer Miller, 75, of Quebeck, passed away Sept. 25, 2011, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Miller was born April 1, 1936, in White County, to Lewis and Enny Mae Brady Brymer.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Tommy Lee Miller, John Richardson; sisters, Minnie Bell Mabe, Siney Doney, Annie Jane Hutson; brothers Buddy Youngblood, Disell Youngblood; and stepdaughter, Tammy Hanna.

Willie Floyd Young, 69, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 23, 2011, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mr. Young was born May 1, 1942, in White County, to Dillard and Lizzie McCauley Young.
He worked several years at Thomas Industries and preached at Roberts Street Church of Christ.
Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Troy Young.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Hattie Brewington Young; two sons, Kirk Young and wife Doris, of Sparta, Brent Lamar Young, of Cookeville; grandchildren, Justin Young, of Chattanooga, Corey Young, of McMinnville, Brett Young, Cameron Young, Kane Young, all of Sparta; great-granddaughter, Kylie Nicole … Read More


Bruce (Pat) Smith

Bruce (Pat) Smith, 58, passed away Sept. 24, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 22 ,1953, in White County, to William T. and Lou Hazel Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William T. Smith Jr.; and sisters, Edwina Smith Page and Bobbie Killgore.
Survivors include wife, Ella Smith, of Eastland community, and brother, Jeri Smith.
Funeral service will be graveside, at 11 a.m., Sept. 27, 2011, at Eastland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 9 a.m., Sept. 27, at the funeral home.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Synthetic ‘marijuana’ found at Alternative School

A White County juvenile male faces drug charges after school officials reportedly discovered the youth in possession of a synthetic ‘marijuana’ at White County’s Alternative School, on Sept. 21.
School officials reportedly developed information that one or more of the students at the school were using a substance known as “Posh”, which is marketed as herbal incense and is said to mimic the effects of marijuana.
A search was conducted that reportedly revealed the substance in the possession of the juvenile student.
A juvenile petition was issued requiring the juvenile male to appear in court to answer for his alleged actions.

Jakes Day 2011 was a huge success once again

This young man learns the finer points of shooting, during the 9th Annual Jakes Day, hosted by The White County Limbstrutters, which helps kids ages 17 and under increase their appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors, as well as develop their skills in a variety of outdoor activities designed for their age groups.

The day could not have been better, on Sept. 17, as more than 200 kids ages 17 years and under and their parents enjoyed the 9th Annual Jakes Day hosted by the National Wild Turkey Federation’s local chapter, The White County Limbstrutters.
