EMS director must be hired by county exec

County commissioners were notified Monday night Tennessee law does not allow them to take applications or interview candidates for the position of White County Emergency Medical Services director.
During the Sept. 19, 2011, meeting of White County Board of Commissioners, Executive Herd Sullivan read a portion of Tennessee Code Annotated that outlines his authority. The matter of hiring a new EMS director was discussed during the Sept. 12, 2011, meeting of Steering Committee B. Ron Bennett, who now serves in that position, will be retiring in the spring of 2012.

I really hadn’t planned on writing a Pistol’s Points for this edition, but after a little chat I had with one of the senior football players, I decided I wanted to talk about something.

Willie Marie Stewart McBride

Willie Marie Stewart McBride, 89, a resident of Radcliff, Ky., passed away Sept. 11, 2011, at North Hardin Health and Rehab Center, in Radcliff.
Mrs. McBride was born Dec. 17, 1921.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Sept. 23, 2011, at Highland Cemetery.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


WCMS football blanked by Algood

Lots of action in the backfield. WCMS quarterback, Tyler Qualls, looks to make a pass out to Josh Rowan as his teammates attempt to block the Algood defenders.

The White County Middle School Warrior football team found the going tough for the second consecutive week.
This week, the Warriors stepped outside of Central Tennessee Conference action and traveled just a few miles north to Algood to take on the undefeated Redskins. Algood scored on the opening kick and never looked back on the way to the 28-0 victory.

Soccer shut out by Stone Memorial

After having their game against Cookeville scheduled for Monday postponed yet again because of rain, the Warriorette soccer team was back in action Tuesday against Stone Memorial.
The Lady Panthers proved ungracious visitors as they outscored WCHS 3-0 in the non-district contest.
Stone broke the scoreless tie in the 13th minute of the game. That 1-0 lead would last all the way until the half.

Frances G. Bassham, 86, wife of Minister Olan Bassham and a resident of Columbia. passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at Maury Regional Medical Center. The Basshams had once resided in Sparta.
A native of Enterprise, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Hugh J. Douglas and the late Grace Daniels Douglas. She was a member of the Highland Church of Christ. She and her husband were married more than 70 years. They served many churches of Christ during their years together. Joe Thomas Haston, 84, passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at Cookeville Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Haston was born March 7, 1927, in Van Buren County, to Philip Moore Haston and Beulah Humphrey Haston.
He spent many years at Kirby’s Auto Parts, Dixie Auto Parts, and also Fall Creek Falls State Park.
Mr. Haston was preceded in death by his parents and brother, P.H. Haston.

Charles Leonard Dennis, 66, of McMinnville, formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 18, 2011, at St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville.
Mr. Dennis was born Dec. 30, 1944, in Sparta, to Joe Dennis and Gladys Dennis Gilbert.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; and Charlene Lee Dennis.

Capt. Edmund Bartholem Mahinske, 88, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 21, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Capt. Mahinske was born March 3, 1923, in Fairmont, Ohio. He served as a U.S. Navy captain, specializing in electronics. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta.

Jane Madewell Young, 72, passed away Sept. 21, 2011, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Young was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Van Buren County, to Lemon Leonard Madewell and Sally Mosely Madewell Carr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 31 years, Earl Wyatman Young Sr.; and grandson, Issac Earl Wyatman Young.

William C. (Bill) Sparks, 80, passed away Sept. 15, 2011.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Myree; son Joe and wife Darlene; granddaughter, Heather Parks and husband Adam; grandson, William Sparks and wife Taryn; five brothers and their families; and three sisters and their families.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Sept. 25, 2011, at O’Connor Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to American Cancer Society or O’Connor Church of Christ.
