Soccer shut out by Stone Memorial

After having their game against Cookeville scheduled for Monday postponed yet again because of rain, the Warriorette soccer team was back in action Tuesday against Stone Memorial.
The Lady Panthers proved ungracious visitors as they outscored WCHS 3-0 in the non-district contest.
Stone broke the scoreless tie in the 13th minute of the game. That 1-0 lead would last all the way until the half.

William C. (Bill) Sparks

William C. (Bill) Sparks, 80, passed away Sept. 15, 2011.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Myree; son Joe and wife Darlene; granddaughter, Heather Parks and husband Adam; grandson, William Sparks and wife Taryn; five brothers and their families; and three sisters and their families.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Sept. 25, 2011, at O’Connor Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to American Cancer Society or O’Connor Church of Christ.


Charlie Milton Medlen

Charlie Milton Medlen, 89, of McMinnville, passed away Sept. 20, 2011, at Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mr. Medlen was born Dec. 2, 1921, in DeKalb County, and grew up in the Peeled Chestnut community, of White County.
He was a retired employee of Genesco, a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, and a member of First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Medlen was preceded in death by his parents, John Byrd and Maggie Billings Medlen; his sisters Maudell Hicks, Mabel Burgess; and his brothers, J. B. Medlin and L. D. Medlen.

Capt. Edmund Bartholem Mahinske, 88, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 21, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Capt. Mahinske was born March 3, 1923, in Fairmont, Ohio. He served as a U.S. Navy captain, specializing in electronics. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Ruscelle Mahinske, of Sparta; daughter, Crigell Sequin, of Centerville, Va.; son, Dwayne Mahinske, of Springfield, Va.; stepdaughters, Kimberly Keller Saylor, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Karin Magmusson, of Burnsville, Minn.; stepson, Donald Wayne Keller, of Idaho; and three step-grandchildren, Rachel Saylor, Benjamin Saylor and Jakob Magmusson.

Joe Thomas Haston, 84, passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at Cookeville Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Haston was born March 7, 1927, in Van Buren County, to Philip Moore Haston and Beulah Humphrey Haston.
He spent many years at Kirby’s Auto Parts, Dixie Auto Parts, and also Fall Creek Falls State Park.

Frances G. Bassham, 86, wife of Minister Olan Bassham and a resident of Columbia. passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at Maury Regional Medical Center. The Basshams had once resided in Sparta.
A native of Enterprise, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Hugh J. Douglas and the late Grace Daniels Douglas. She was a member of the Highland Church of Christ. She and her husband were married more than 70 years. They served many churches of Christ during their years together. Reba Lois Bohannon, 80, of Greenville, Texas, passed away Sept.19, 2011 at her home.
Mrs. Bohannon was born June 4, 1931, in Sparta, to Beecher and Daily Bumbalough.
She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was a seamstress and loved spending time with her loving family.
Mrs. Bohannon was preceded in death by her son, Danny B. Bohannon, and grandson, Ty B. Bohannon.

Yvonne C. Ferris, 90, of Central City, Neb., passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at her home.
Mrs. Ferris was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in Dedrick, Mo., to Joel M. and Florence Brim Culbertson.
She grew up in Missouri and Kansas, graduated from Ft. Scott, Kansas High School, in 1938. In 1940, she graduated from Ft. Scott Junior College. Mrs. Ferris taught school in Missouri, in 1941.
