Donald Houston Lee

Donald Houston Lee, 72, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 23, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Lee was born Sept. 10, 1939, in Spencer, to James E. and Myrtle Smith Lee.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Dec. 1, 2011, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Shockley Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-9 p.m., Nov. 30, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Dec. 1, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Charlie Lee Sherrell

Charlie Lee Sherrell, 89, of Sparta, left this world in the hands of his Heavenly Father, on Nov. 27, 2011.
Mr. Sherrell was born March 24, 1922, to John Nelson and Emma Lou Baker Sherrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Johnnie Sherrell; two sisters, Martha Sherrell, Lena Mae Sherrell; and one stepson, Haston Weaver.
Survivors include the love of his life, Ruby Clouse Sherrell; one stepdaughter, Brenda Johnson; two stepsons, Kenneth Weaver and wife Jean Anne, James Weaver; and numerous nieces and nephews.

WCHS bowling team picks up win over Livingston

The White County High School bowling team defeated Livingston 22-5 on November 21st at Bowling World in Cookeville.
WCHS got the three bonus points for the total pin fall winning that 2302 to 1626. The Warriors also won each of the two points for wins in each of the three games of the series. WCHS also 13 of the individual head to head match-ups. All of Livingston’s points came through individual match-ups.
The Warriors won game one 804-560 and picked up wins in four of the six individual contests.

WCHS travels to Stone Memorial Friday

Benton Taylor “Ben” Graham, 66, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 28, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Graham was born July 1, 1945, in White County, to Joe Gaines Graham and Willie Mae Graham Goodwin.
He was retired from White County Highway Department. Mr. Graham attended East Sparta Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Joe Thomas Graham.

9th grade splits openers

The White County High School freshman teams had their season openers delayed a week, but were in action Monday against the Clarkrange junior varsity squads.
Last week, the freshman teams were scheduled to host Cumberland County in the openers, but CCHS failed to show due to a schedule mix-up. Thus, the WCHS teams got their first action at Clarkrange.
The WCHS ninth graders split their games. The Warriors got the season started with a 64-42 win over the Buffaloes while the Warriorettes suffered the narrow 36-33 loss.

Joe Hymon Rowland, 79, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 25, 2011, at Raintree Manor, in McMinnville.
Mr. Rowland was born April 9, 1932, in McMinnville, to Henry and Ella McCormick Rowland.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., Nov. 28, 2011, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Shockley Cemetery.

Keith Gale Richardson

Keith Gale Richardson, 79, of Algood, passed away Nov. Nov. 22, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Richardson was born Nov. 24, 1931, in the Willow Grove community of Clay County, to Andrew and Beulah Stover Richardson.
He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving two tours with the 279th Infantry Regiment. For 24 years, he owned and operated Richardson’s Grocery, in Algood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jewell Hensley, Margaret Richardson; and a brother, James Richardson.

Medical helicopters transport two after Thanksgiving crash

A 37-year-old White County man and an 8-year-old boy were transported to out-of-town hospitals by medical helicopters after a Thanksgiving night crash on McMinnville.
According to Trooper Kevin Ballew, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, Matthew Starkey, 25, of Rock Island, was traveling eastbound on McMinnville Highway, in a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup. Jeffrey Wayne Wilson, 39, of Sparta, was traveling westbound, on McMinnville Highway, in a 1994 Honda Civic, when he reportedly crossed over into the eastbound lane, striking the Starkey vehicle head-on.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m., in the vicinity of Pinewood Road.

Parking ticket scam invades White County

White County Sheriff Department is warning area residents about an alleged scam that involves e-mails from a company associated with a large parking lot company.
Detective Ruben Hormilla, of White County Sheriff Department, said he recently received a phone call the possible scam. After a preliminary investigation, Hormilla said he found the scam is nationwide.
Hormilla said two individuals claiming to be attorneys are reportedly sending e-mails to people claiming they owe unpaid parking violations to a company called Central Parking. According to Hormilla, the amounts range between $17 and $75.

Steve Hine, clerk at Sparta Post Office, is ready to tackle the busy holiday season.

It’s less than two weeks away from the priority mail deadline for sending care packages to military loved ones serving overseas with APO or FPO addresses.
While the Parcel Post deadline has already passed, Priority and First-Class Mail services will still be able to get packages to servicemen and women in time for Christmas. Most addresses will receive packages by Christmas if shipped by Dec. 10. The only exception is APO/FPO/DPO 093 zip codes, which can receive packages by Christmas if shipped by Dec. 3. Warriors drop two in Thanksgiving Classic

To the hoop. Devon Davidson recorded a double double netting 17 points and 11 rebounds against Smith County, but it wasn’t enough to stave off defeat. The Warriors lost to Smith County (55-51) and Lebanon (77-69) in the Mitch Wilson Thanksgiving Classic.

The Warriors went into the Mitch Wilson Thanksgiving Classic sporting a 2-0 record, but could not double their win total over the weekend.
In fact, WCHS came out of the holiday break at .500 having dropped two games at Cannon County and falling to 2-2 overall.

Warriorettes struggle in weekend outings

Up and in. Kelsey Roberts goes up for two of her 12 points in the 66-33 loss to Cannon County. The Warriorettes also lost to Brentwood 43-20 over the weekend in Cannon County.

The Warriorettes didn’t come away from the holiday weekend with a lot to be thankful about as far as the action on the basketball court went.

Individuals driving these yellow vehicles are only a phone call away if a motorist should happen to break down on any interstate in Tennessee.

Holiday travelers will have one less worry as they hit the roadways during the official Thanksgiving holidays with helpful phone numbers that can bring assistance in the event of a vehicle breakdown.
The HELP program, which is part of Tennessee Department of Transportation, has provided a list of coordinators and assistant coordinator, along with their phone numbers.
