Laura Jean Cowden Powell

Laura Jean Cowden Powell, 94, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 30, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Powell was born April 13, 1917, in White County, to Marshall M. and Laura Goodwin Cowden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer L. Powell.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Powell, John Powell, both of Sparta, and a granddaughter, Katie Powell, of Chicago.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Feb. 4, 2012, at Sparta First Methodist Church, with burial in Highland Cemetery. Rich Morgan will officiate. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Feb. 3, at the funeral home, and 9-11 a.m., Feb. 4, at the church.

Susan Jane Gayheart

Susan Jane Gayheart, 62, passed away Jan. 25, 2012.
Ms. Gayheart was born Feb. 14, 1942, in Morrisville, Vt., to James and Maryanne Austin.
She worked throughout her life as a cabinetmaker.
Ms. Gayheart was preceded in death by her mother; granddaughter, Ashley McDonald; and Roger Pennington.
Survivors include the father of her children, Edgar Gayheart; sons, James Gayheart, “Bo” Edgar Gayheart; daughters, Erica Scholl, Jennifer Swain, Lucinda Shederer, Donya Gahyeart, Julie Pleasant; father, James W. Austin; 29 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six brothers; and three sisters.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.


Barbara Joyce McManus

Barbara Joyce McManus, 65 of Knoxville, passed away Jan. 29, 2012.
Mrs. McManus was a loving and devoted grandmother. She dearly loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them, telling them stories, sharing her faith, and teaching them life lessons. She was saved at age 17 at Hensley’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, in Sparta.
Mrs. McManus was preceded in death by her parents, Toy R. and Rachel Winnett Young, and special sister-in-law, Patricia Strohm.

Lisa Lynn Nelson Troglen, 42, of Doyle, passed away Jan. 30, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Troglen was born April 2, 1969, in Greenup, Ky., to Sye Homer and Garnet Underwood Nelson.
Survivors include her husband, Danny Troglen, of Doyle; daughter, Twyla Troglen, of Doyle; son, Lee Troglen, of Doyle; mother, Garnet Nelson, of Greenup, Ky.; brother, Vincent Durant Nelson, of Watertown; sister, Brenda Kaye Waldron, of Ohio; mother-in-law, Eva Troglen, of Doyle; and several nieces and nephews.

Freshman Warriors finish second in 6AAA tournament

The White County High School freshman Warrior basketball team finished second in Saturday’s District 6AAA tournament held at Warren County High School.

Oscar Thomas Bowman, 54, of Cookeville, passed away Jan. 25, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Bowman was born Nov. 6, 1957, in Nashville, to Willard Brockette Bowman and Loretta Arlene Shoemaker Bowman Brown.
He was a veteran of United States Army National Guard where he served six years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eve Bowker Bowman, of Cookeville; daughters, Misty Nicole Bowman, Tonya Arlene Van Ness, of Rickman; step-children, Debora Graham, of Baxter, Stephen Graham, of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Rick Bowman and wife Judy, of Rickman; sister, Pamala Whitehead, of Cookeville; half-brother, Darryle Brown, of Smithville; and three grandchildren.

Fire Committee reviewing funding and countywide department

A decline in manpower and the need for more funding has precipitated a serious discussion among county officials and firefighters about how to solve these issues.
Matt McBride, a county commissioner and a fulltime firefighter for City of Sparta, said volunteerism is declining in the fire service. He attributed the problem to the generation gap. He said many of the people involved in fire service, in White County, range in age from approximately 35 years old to 65. The number of volunteers below the age of 35 is declining.

Wanda Louise McGhee, 61, of Sparta, passed away after a four-year battle with breast cancer, on Jan. 28, 2012, at Baptist Hospital, in Nashville.
Mrs. McGhee was born May 1, 1950, in White County, to Homer Whitley Roberts Sr. and Bessie Mary Jane Baker Roberts.
She was retired after 40 years of teaching in the White County School system.

Presidential Primary Election scheduled for March 6

Less than one week remains to register to vote if anyone wishes to vote in the March 6 Presidential Primary Election.
Monday, Feb. 6, at 4 p.m., is the deadline for voter registration.
Early voting begins on Feb. 15 and will be held at White County Courthouse in room 215, on Mon., Feb. 15 through Sat., Feb. 28. Voting hours are 88 a.m.-4 p.m., on weekdays, and 9 a.m.-noon, on Saturdays. The office will be closed on Sundays, as well as Mon., Feb. 20, for Presidents’ Day.

Clay Holman Road fire source is ‘suspicious’

Firefighters from four districts, along with Caney Fork Utility District, responded to a fire at 215 Clay Holman Road at approximately 1:15 a.m., on Jan. 25, which is now being called “suspicious” in origin.
Sparta Fire Department was first on the scene, providing mutual aid to BonDeCroft Fire Department. Sparta firefighter Matt McBride said the structure was about 75 percent “involved” at the time. Eastland and Hickory Valley volunteer fire departments also responded and stayed on the scene until about 4:30 a.m.

Dewey Stanley Simmons, 68, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 28, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Simmons was born Dec. 23, 1943, in White County, to Dewey Harvel and Margie Wallace Simmons.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Jones Simmons, of Sparta; two daughters, Candie and Carrie Simmons, both of Sparta; two brothers, Cecil Simmons, of Doyle, Neil Simmons, of Smyrna;

Floyd ropes title and drives away in new truck

Greg Floyd, pictured above with wife, Ashley, and their children Halle and Blaine, competed in the Music City Madness team roping event on January 14th and 15th in Franklin and came home with the grand prize, the Dodge dually. Floyd also won the saddle and other prizes.
