Ornie B. Wilmoth Montgomery, 98, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 27, 2012, at the Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mrs. Montgomery was born Feb. 13, 1914, in Putnam County, to Clennie and Rebecca Allen Wilmoth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arlie Marion Montgomery Sr.; son, Charles Montgomery; and granddaughter, Brenda Montgomery.
Surviviors include her son, Arlie M. Pauline Thompson Bennett, 92, of Rickman, passed away Feb. 29, 2012.
Mrs. Bennett was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Livingston, to John Morgan and Fannie Tayse Thompson.
She was a retired co-owner of Bennett’s Grocery, in Overton County. Mrs. Bennett was a pillar of Swallows Chapel community. She provided groceries to those in need and was known to show up at any given time when she knew of the need, with food and her precious time. Mrs. Bennett was an active member in the Order of Eastern Star, in Livingston, last serving as Esther.

James “Jim Dozer” Barry Caldwell

James Barry “Jim Dozer” Caldwell, 55, of McMinnville, passed away Feb. 23, 2012.
Mr. Caldwell was born Oct. 27, 1956, in White County, to Charlie Thomas and Vila Mae Cole Caldwell.
He was a nursery worker.

Thurman Ray Seals, 67, of Walling passed away Friday evening, Feb. 24, 2012, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Mr. Seals was born Jan. 25, 1945, in White County.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thurman Ray Seals Sr.; a brother, Carroll Milton Seals; and a nephew, Carroll Milton Seals Jr.

The Warriorettes huddle around Coach Bryan Haley during a timeout late in the season ending loss to Cumberland County in the region semifinals.

The Warriorettes fell victim to a slow start in their Region 3AAA semifinal game against the Cumberland County Lady Jets.
After trailing 15-4 at the end of one period of play, the Warriorettes would battle their way back to take the lead momentarily in the third quarter, but eventually succumbed to the Lady Jets 49-44. Joyce Elaine Judd Jones, 65, of Sparta, was called home to Heaven, on Feb. 27, 2012, surrounded by a multitude of family and friends.
Our time with Joyce was all too short, but her loving impact on so many was tremendous and inspiring as a mother, grandmother, sister and mentor, Sunday school teacher and a friend to hundreds.
As the 10th child of 15, Joyce grew strong and true as a mother of four and grandmother of 13.

Samuel E. Hooker, 87, passed away Feb. 21, 2012, at his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Hooker was born July 15, 1924, in Cheatham County, to Luther and Mary Libby Gupton Hooker.
He attended Wallace Smith School, in Sparta, and later finished high school, in Cookeville. Mr. Hooker served his country in the U.S. Army, in 1943, and was honorably discharged.
He later attended Gupton and Jones Mortuary School, in Nashville, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. After graduation, Mr. Hooker served his apprenticeship with K. Gardner Funeral Home, in Nashville. He was the chief embalmer, 1952 1955. He went on to work with Lewis and Smith, … Read More

Charles E. Reed Jr. 73, of Sparta passed away Feb. 26, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Reed was born July 17, 1938, in Decatur, Ill., to Charles E. Reed Sr. and Vivian E. Ping Reed.
He was a machinist and U.S. Air Force veteran.

Murdered man found at Sparta residence

MURDER SCENE. The small house that sits atop a rocky, washed out roadway just off Hensley Chapel Road, is where the body of James Caldwell was found after the alleged killer reportedly confessed to the murder.

James Harland Lackey, 37

At approximately midnight on Feb. 23, a Sparta man was allegedly murdered in his home on Hensley Chapel Road.
According to Chris Isom of White County Sheriff Department, James Harland Lackey, 37, of Lewisburg, entered the residence of James Caldwell and shot him twice. Lackey then reportedly fled the scene.

Dispute turns into shooting on Spring Street

On Feb. 17, Sparta Police Department responded to a hit and run crash behind Spring Street Barbershop, that quickly turned into the scene of a shooting.
Sgt. Chris Bennett of the Sparta Police Department arrived to the scene of the crash at 12:39 p.m. As he began his investigation, he noticed a disturbance at 124 N. Spring Street.
Sgt. Bennett witnessed a resident, Randy Maddux, sitting in the side yard holding his left leg. Maddux reportedly told Sgt. Bennett that he had been shot.

Crash on Bockman takes down fire hydrant and utility pole

REPAIR. City of Sparta employees with the public works department work to repair the damage created by a crash, on Feb. 21.

At approximately 11 a.m. on Feb. 21 on Bockman Way, near the corner of M.L. Officer Street, a vehicle crashed into a water hydrant and a utility pole, closing a lane traffic and causing 10 hours or cleanup for city utility workers.
Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth states that a white GMC Sonoma, driven by Jerry Johnson, 44, of Sparta was traveling west on Bockman Way on the inside lane.

Officers cleared in Margeson shooting death

A document released Feb. 21, 2012, by District Attorney General Randall York, states White County Sheriff Department officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the July 2011 shooting death of James Edward Margeson.
According to the document, York had received the official investigative report prepared by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation about Margeson’s shooting.
The document stated on July 20, 2011, James Edward Margeson was required to appear in Criminal Court. However, he failed to appear.
