Edna Pauline Lance Knowles, 67, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 15, 2012, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Knowles was born April 19, 1944, in White County, to Frank and Billie Shelton Lance.
She was death by her parents; husband, Henry Knowles; and three brothers, Tim Lance, Claude Lance, Luther Lance.
Survivors include two children, Deborah Darlene West and husband Bo, of Sparta, Nancy Knowles, of Doyle; grandchildren, Nicholas Knowles, of Sparta, Deborah K. Mr. Barlow was born July 16, 1985, in Cookeville, to Lonnie and Barbara Stamps Barlow.

Chester Ray Donn, 81, passed away Feb. 15, 2012, at DeKalb Community Hospital emergency room.
He served in the U.S. Army, in the Korean Conflict, and also worked in nursery.
Mr. Donn was preceded in death by his prents, Ernest and Amelia Birkholz Donn; son, Bruce Chester Donn; and brothers, Ervin, Bernard and Rowland Donn.

Laura Belle Adcock, 89, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 15, 2012.
Mrs. Adcock was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Putnam County.
She was the wife of the late George E. Adcock.

WCECD struggles to understand budget

E-911 Director Greg England discovered several discrepancies and unexpected expenses in the Emergency Communications District budget he presented at the meeting of the WCECD Board meeting on Feb. 13 that led to the Board creating a new budget committee.
England, who took office in November 2011 and was not involved in creating the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 2011 and ending June 2012, said he spent many hours assessing the budget he inherited, and several issues arose during his research.

On Feb. 14, 84-year-old Ruth Richards was honored by Sheriff Oddie Shoupe and the employees of the White County Justice Center as she retired after 34 years of service at the Justice Center.
In her 34 years as a cook at the Justice Center, Richards served under seven sheriffs. She began working under Joe Cummings, then John McGhee, William Hickey, Charles Anderson, James O’Conner, Guy Goff and is retiring in her second term with Oddie … Read More


Early voting is underway

Early voting began on Feb. 15, giving registered voters the opportunity to cast ballots for the March 6 Presidential Preference Primary. This is the first statewide election in which voters are required to show photo identification prior to casting their ballots.
White County Administrator of Elections, Dorcas Marcum, is encouraging voters to take advantage of early voting if they wish.
“Early voting offers a convenient way for voters to cast their ballots without worrying about making it to the polls on Election Day,” said Marcum. “The added flexibility allows individuals to work voting into their already busy schedules.”

Ms. Johnson was born July 25, 1922, in Sparta, to bob and Lilly Selby Johnson.
She attended Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ, in Cookeville, and was active with the Pacesetters organization.

Tax collections still slow recovery to pre-recession numbers

The holiday buying season helped boost Tennessee’s sales tax collections statewide for January, with White County also seeing a rise in at least one category.
Tennessee Department of Revenue reports $1,231,923 in state sales tax was collected in White County. This figure is up from December 2011’s number of $992,712. However, local sales tax collections took nosedive, with $345,101 garnered in January and $280,316 for December.
According to TDR, January’s revenue collections were $1.05 billion, which is $37.1 million more than budgeted. This is the sixth straight month of growth this fiscal year. The figure reflected December consumer spending during the holiday buying season.

John Douglas Harden, 68, of Sparta, passed away Feb.14, 2012. at his residence.
Mr. Harden was born Aug. 22, 1943, in White County, to Olcie Lavaughn “Snap” Harden and Mable Pearl Kerr Harden.
He was retired from Sprint phone company and was a U.S. Army veteran.
