Lawmakers continue with heavy workload

Members of Tennessee’s General Assembly have encountered another busy week, with numerous bills that are still on review for the coming weeks.
Some of the proposed laws include:
HB 3236: Driver Licenses – As introduced, prevents sex offenders from obtaining or renewing commercial drivers licenses as of July 1, 2012.
HB 2661: Traffic Safety – As introduced, removes the requirement that any driver or passenger of a motorcycle 21 years of age or older wear a motorcycle helmet.
This bill would amend existing law to enact the “Motorcyclist Liberty Restoration Act.”
HB3057: Railroads – As introduced, requires motor vehicles to stop at a railroad grade crossing where a … CONTINUED

Synthetic drug violators will have beer permits revoked

City officials have officially approved an ordinance that will allow Sparta Beer Board to revoke an individual’s beer license if he/she is charged with the sale of synthetic drugs.
Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved the new law during its Feb. 16, 2012, meeting. The synthetic drug issue has been one of the hot topics in the law enforcement arena for the past couple of years, with City of Sparta experiencing an incident with one of its businesses that ultimately led to the passage of this ordinance.

Warriorettes take dramatic 6AAA semifinal win

Another game winning shot. Allyson Quillen lays the ball up as time expires sending the Warriorettes to the District 6AAA title game on Monday. Quillen’s basket gave WCHS the thrilling 43-42 win over Warren County and matches them up against Coffee County Monday in the championship game.

Teams that win championships usually are benefitted by a little good luck on the path to that title.
The Warriorettes (12-16) found some good luck in the closing seconds of Saturday’s District 6AAA semifinal contest with Warren County and in the process found their way into the district championship game on Monday night back at Cumberland County High School.

Warriors fall into 6AAA consolation game

The Warriors scored the first four points of the game in the District 6AAA semifinals on Saturday in Crossville.
That would, however, be their lone lead of the game and after the first minute of the second quarter, WCHS (14-15) would not be within single digits of the home standing Jets of Cumberland County (17-13).

Joel Thomas Barlow, 26, of Sparta, passed from this life on Feb. 16, 2012, at Skyline Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mr. Barlow was born July 16, 1985, in Cookeville, to Lonnie and Barbara Stamps Barlow.

He served in the U.S. Army, in the Korean Conflict, and also worked in nursery.

Reba Nell Johnson, 89, of Cookeville, passed away Feb. 14, 2012, at her residence.
Ms. Johnson was born July 25, 1922, in Sparta, to bob and Lilly Selby Johnson.
She attended Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ, in Cookeville, and was active with the Pacesetters organization.
