Anonymous tip leads to meth lab bust

Detectives with White County Sheriff Department received an anonymous tip that led them to an alleged meth lab on Scott Town Road and the arrest of two Sparta men on drug charges.
According to Detective Chris Isom, the anonymous caller said Jeffrey Martin, 34, of Sparta, was reportedly manufacturing methamphetamine in a barn at the end of Scott Town Road.
After the department received the tip, they reportedly alerted the suspect’s probation officer, who gave detectives permission to search the premises.

James Carroll Earles, 74, of Quebeck, passed away March 25, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Earles was born March 18, 1938, in White County, to J.D. and Bertha Ernestine Savage Earles.
He was a retired woodworker and a member of Doyle Church of the Nazarene

Robert Howard Frasier, 94, of Sparta, passed away March 27, 2012, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Frasier was born Oct. 7, 1917, in White County, to Joe Frasier and Raselee Burden Frasier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Susie Katherine Payne Frasier; and grandson, Ryan Tracy Coss.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Bobbie and Carl Cude, of Sparta, Sandra Brown, of Mt. Juliet; brother and sister-in-law, James and Alma Frasier, of Sparta, three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mattie Hazel Ray Garman, 84, of Sparta, passed away March 26, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Garman was born July 14, 1927, in White County, to James S. and Lena Belle Farley Ray.
She was also preceded in death two husbands, J.C. McCormick, David Matthew Garman, and a brother, Walter Douglas Ray.
Survivors include her sons, Alan McCormick, of Sparta, Ronald Howard McCormick, of Cookeville; two brothers, James T. Ray, of Sparta, A.Z. Mitchell Ray, of Mt. Juliet; four grandchildren, Sosha Everhart, Conan McCormick, Dacia McCormick, Erin McCormick; and several great-grandchildren.

Task force tackles obesity

Governor Bill Haslam has named obesity as the focus of his Health and Wellness Task Force as nearly one third of Tennesseans are now considered obese.
Last year, Tennessee was named the fourth most obese state, with 31.9 percent of adults considered obese. While this is a rise from 2nd in the nation for obesity in the previous year, in 2010 the percentage of obese adults was actually lower, at 31.6 percent.
The rate of obese Tennesseans has nearly doubled since 1995, when only 16.4 percent of adults in Tennessee were considered obese.
The total number of overweight and obese adults is 68.3 percent.

County gets A-plus credit rating

Finance Director Mark Farley was proud to announce White County has an A-plus credit rating that was provided by Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services.
Farley made the announcement during the recent White County Board of Commissioners’ meeting. Standard and Poor’s also listed the outlook as “stable.”
“In this day and time with everything that’s going on [economically] I thought that was quite an accomplishment,” Farley said. “This isn’t really just a credit rating for the White County government. It’s the credit rating for White County. They look at our housing numbers. They look at our foreclosures. They look at our unemployment numbers.”

Fugitive captured in DeKalb County after 16 days on the run

Jeffrey M. Hodges, 38, of Morrison, who escaped from White County Jail on March 12, was apprehended by the US Marshall Fugitive Task Force in DeKalb County at 10:30 a.m. on March 28.
According to Detective Chris Isom of the White County Sheriff Department, Hodges, who was being held on charges of aggravated burglary and simple possession, had allegedly been witnessed on camera leaving the Justice Center at about 12:45 a.m. on March 12.
Isom states that Hodges called the department hours later to apologize for escaping and allegedly told law enforcement that “he just had to do what he had to do.”

Softball gets mercy rule win over Lady Cavs

It’s always a big momentum boost to open league play with a win.

WCHS tennis teams net wins at Livingston

The follow through. Caleb Winton follows through on his swing during WCHS tennis action. Winton was part of two wins for the Warriors as they defeated Livingston Tuesday to remain undefeated. The Warriorettes improved to 2-1 with their team victory.

The White County High School tennis teams returned to action Tuesday at Livingston and came home with wins in tow by both the Warriors and Warriorettes.
The Warriors improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-3 win over the Wildcats. The Warriorettes also took the 5-3 victory and are now 2-1 on the young season.

Edward Cole, 79, of Sparta, passed away March 21, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Cole was born May 9, 1932, in White County, to Benjamin and Winnie Usrey Cole.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and four brothers.
Mr. Cole was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from General Motors Corp. after 35 years. He was a member of the Lansden Church of Christ.

Wanda Gaile Conatser, 60, of Cookeville, passed away March 21, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Conatser was born Sept. 19, 1951, in Putnam County, to Robert Carl and Ruby Ethelene Welch Hembree.
She was a charter member of Colonial View Baptist Church.
Mrs. Conatser worked as a licensed practical nurse for many years in nursing homes and home health. She was very talented in craftwork and crocheted hats for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, in Nashville.
