Wildfire spreading in Eastland area

Firefighters from across the county responded to a large forest fire that erupted in the Bridgestone Firestone Centennial Wilderness on June 29. It was reported that the flames were jumping 50 yards at a time. Firefighting airplanes flew overhead to halt the spread of the fire. White County Sheriff Department also assisted, along with prisoners who handed out water to rescue workers who braved the triple-digit temperatures to fight the blaze. Emogene Scott, 82, of Sparta, passed away June 29, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Scott was born April 19, 1930, in the Clifty community of White County, to Herbert and Maggie Brock Roberts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Scott, and a son, Lynn Scott.

Juanita Terry Scott Mackie

Juanita Terry Scott Mackie passed away at her home in the Key Community, on June 28, 2012. She was 92.
Juanita graduated from White County High School, in 1940, and worked at the shirt factory in Sparta after graduation. She met the love of her life, Floro Mackie, and they married in May 1942, in Rossville, Ga.

Lela Marie Cope Rogers

Lela Marie Cope Rogers, 74, of Doyle, passed away June 28, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mrs. Rogers was born April 3, 1938, in White County, to Beecher and Pauline Rutherford Cope.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Rogers.
Survivors include her son, Jerrell Samples, of Huntington,W.V.; daughter, Donna Frasier, of Sparta; three grandchildren, Heather Samples, of Sparta, Lacy Eldridge, of Crossville, Matt Mace, of Crossville; three great-grandchildren, Jayden Eldridge, Lincoln Eldridge, Liviana Mace; two brothers, Gene Cope, of Missouri, Bobby Cope, of Florida; and half-brother, Burt Rutherford, of Sparta.

Rama Jean McCormick

Rama Jean McCormick, 78, passed away June 29, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Smithville.
Ms. McCormick was born Nov. 3, 1933, in White County, to Rama Arthur and Lillie Austin McCormick.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include three brothers, James McCormick, Bill McCormick, both of Sparta, Bob McCormick, of Murfreesboro, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., July 1, 2012, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Lost Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m., June 30, at the funeral home. Stewart Orell and Shaun McCormick will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

151 new Tennessee laws effective July 1

Tennessee legislators muddled through the seemingly neverending pile of bills that were presented to them during the most recent session of the General Assembly and were successful in sending 151 new laws to the governor for his signature.

SB2766 TennCare – As enacted, enacts the “Annual Coverage Assessment Act of 2012.”

Warrior summer team finishes with 2-0 win

The Warrior summer travel ball varsity team put the finishing touches on their summer play with a 2-0 win over Shelbyville on Saturday in Sparta.
The win over the Golden Eagles ended the Warrior summer team’s play with a record of 13 wins against just three losses.

Howard Lee Stafford

Howard Lee Stafford, 82, of Sparta, passed away June 23, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Stafford was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. He attended Pistole Baptist Church and was retired from Dacco Inc.
Mr. Stafford was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Myrtle Lou Scott Stafford; son-in-law, Richard Stafford; stepbrother, J.B. Pigg; sister-in-law, Lana Scott; brother-in-law, Frank Hutchins; and nephew, David Scott.

One step at a time to Washington

Junior Garcia, 19, of Texas, passed through Sparta as part of his 37 day, 1,369-mile journey from Texas to Washington, D.C. to pray for our nation’s leaders. Garcia is a college student who is studying to become a physician’s assistant according to CBS Dallas. At about 4 p.m. on June 26, Garcia and the members of his church who are following him arrived in Sparta on Highway 70 and crossed onto Highway 111.

Tourism up in Tennessee and White County

Tennessee’s second-largest industry is creating economic recovery in Tennessee as tourism businesses across the state report record-breaking revenues.
The Pigeon Forge area, as well as Nashville and Memphis, have all reported dramatic increases in tourist visits.
2011 was also big year for tourism, with figures topping the previous records set in 2007 and 2008 by $30 million.
According to Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism Director Leon Downey, revenues for 2012 are already up from last year by double digits.

TCAP scores improve for TN students

The 2012 Tennessee Comprehensive Program (TCAP) test scores have been released and for the second year in a row, Tennessee students’ scores are improving.
In 23 out of the 24 total test sections, students reached higher levels of proficiency in grades three through eight, as well as most high school end of course exams.
According to a report from Gov. Bill Haslam’s office, half of students in third through eighth grade scored at grade level or above in reading. Nearly half of students were proficient or advanced in math. Over 60 percent were proficient or advanced in science.

Beware of fireworks dangers during drought

City and county officials are warning residents of the dangers of fireworks this Fourth of July in the midst of a severe drought that has lead to several field fires across the county.
According to Sparta Fire Chief Kirk Young, fire departments responded to four field fire calls on Tuesday alone. The worst fire burned 10 acres of land.
“I am not issuing any burn permits in the city right now due to the severe drought and the danger to life and property,” Young explained.
