Harold Dean Armstrong, 76, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 4, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Armstrong was born July 13, 1936, in Knoxville, to Harold Freeman and Chloe Smith Armstrong.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Joyce Green Armstrong, of Sparta; five sons, Jeff Armstrong and wife Teresa, of Smithville, Wendell Armstrong and wife Connie, of Quebeck, David Armstrong and wife Sheila, of Sparta, Tim Armstrong, of Sparta, Jason Armstrong and wife Darlene, of Quebeck; sister, Rosemary McMahon and husband R.L., of Knoxville; brother, Jack Armstrong and wife Carol, of Knoxville; 22 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; … CONTINUED

Margaret Moody

Margaret Moody, 84, of Cookeville, passed away Aug. 3, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Survivors include her sons, John Moody and wife Beverly, of Cookeville, Paul Moody and wife Levita, of LaVergne, Eric Moody and wife Jennifer, of Cookeville, Forrest Moody and wife Becky, of Spring Hill; daughter, Katherine Ervin and husband John, of Cookeville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service is planned for a later date.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Teeples Welch

Margaret Teeples Welch, 51, of Sparta, passed away July 30, 2012, at the home of her sister.
Ms. Welch was born Aug. 29, 1960, in Sparta, to Bobby Teeples and Frances Lucille Cope Teeples.
The family has chosen cremation, with no services planned.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harold W. “Paw Paw” Langley, 62, of Mt. Juliet, passed away July 28, 2012, after battling cancer.
Mr. Langley was born March 29, 1950, in Smithville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ron Langley and Gladys Watson Langley; sisters, Reba and Lillian; brothers, Lillard and Leroy; and brother-in-law, B.J. Vaughn
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Pam Langley; sons, Tony, of Sparta, Jason and wife Janet, of Hermitage, Dustin and wife Aimee, of Gallatin; daughters, Rachel Nicholson and husband Marc, of Blue Ridge, Ga., Amanda Buchanan, of Mt. Morgan Eugene Gilbert

Morgan Eugene Gilbert, 75, of Sparta, passed away July 28, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Gilbert was born Sept. 24, 1936, in White County, to William H. “Bill” Gilbert and Willie Pearl Cope Gilbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his son, Billy Gilbert, of Sparta; several cousins and friends; and special friend, Philip Qualls, of Sparta.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., July 30, 2012, at Hunter Funeral Home.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harley Bennett, 81, of Sparta, passed away July 26, 2012, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Toy and Odell Bennett; wife, Carol Jean Kirchner Bennett; son, Thomas William Bennett; brothers, Floyd, Ronnie and Donald Bennett; and sisters, Geneva Rooks and Janice Bennett;

Warriors to play in Anderson Co. jamboree Friday

Block that kick. Kade Howard and Hunter Cantrell get up high to try and block the field goal attempt by Upperman during Tuesday’s scrimmage. The Warriors did block a couple of kicks. They will compete in the Anderson County Jamboree Friday night.

The Warrior football team had their final preseason scrimmage Tuesday night and will wrap up the preseason portion of their schedule with an appearance in the Anderson County Jamboree on Friday night in Clinton.
The dress rehearsal under Friday night lights will have the Warriors traveling into east Tennessee to take part in the Tennessee Orthopedic Clinic’s Anderson County Jamboree held at Anderson County High School. … CONTINUED

WCHS golfers defeat Cumberland County

Chipping. Warriorette sophomore, Shelby Johnson, in her first varsity match of the season, finished the day with a 36 for par in the District 6AAA match against Cumberland County. The Warriorettes and Warriors take on Warren County Thursday at Riverwatch.

The White County High School golf team bounced back from their loss in the season opener a couple of weeks ago to defeat both the Cumberland County Jets and Lady Jets Monday at the Sparta Country Club.
Some stellar performances against a District 6AAA foe led to the dual win on the afternoon. Between the boys’ and girls’ teams, WCHS had three golfers shoot par or better on … CONTINUED

Aldermen question Mayor Young on tire purchases

Mayor and Aldermen. The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen met on August 2 to discuss updates on the city departments and a letter from the state concerning city tire purchases.

At the August 2 Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, the board heard reports from city department heads and disclosed a letter received from the state Comptroller of the Treasury office concerning the purchase of tires by Mayor Jeff Young.
Olof Fornehead, Director of Public Works, reported that operations were normal for the month. The switch from the old to new waterlines has been going as planned.

QB Club Auction & BBQ another big success

Anyone up for a little kayaking. The Warrior football team models the Jackson Kayak being auctioned off by Roy Whited, principal auctioneer for Tri-Star Auction Company. Kade Howard gladly demonstrates the use of the kayak while his teammates hoist the kayak up in the air.

Funding a high school football team each season with just the basics needed to get through the season is an astronomical expense.
The local Quarterback Club tries to ensure the Warrior football team has everything needed and then helps with some of the extras. The main fundraiser each year for the team is the annual barbecue and auction, which was held Saturday night.… CONTINUED

Photo day kicks off TTU preseason football camp

Warriors turned Golden Eagles. Seth McDonald (left) and Conor Sparkman were teammates at White County High School and now they are both members of the TTU football team. The Golden Eagles started preseason camp this weekend in preparation for their season opener August 30th against Hampton.

The 2012 Tennessee Tech football team started their preseason camp Saturday and began things with their annual photo day.
After battling a thunderstorm that hit about the time the event was scheduled, the team, which includes two WCHS graduates, hit the field for team and individual pictures Saturday morning.
