Terry Junior Walker

Terry Junior Walker, 55, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 28, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Walker was born Aug. 25, 1957, in Indiana, to Deanna Palmore and the late Terry Walker. He was an employee of Rhythm North America.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William Michael and Andrea Woodruff, of Sparta; granddaughter, Marleigh Woodruff; grandson, Liam Woodruff; mother, Deanna Palmore; sister, Lori Haley; and brother, Brian Walker.
Memorial service will be 5 p.m., Aug. 30, 2012, at Sparta First Church of the Nazarene, with Randy Marshall officiating. The family will receive friends after 3 p.m., Aug. 30, 2012, at the church.

WCHS golfers rack up more wins to start the week

A pair of good rounds. Tommy Sparkman turned in a couple of good rounds recently for the Warrior golf team. On Monday, he shot a 36 to help the Warriors to a win over Coffee County. WCHS hosts Oakland Thursday.

The WCHS golf team continued to pick up momentum in their season as they added more district wins.
Playing on back-to-back days at the Sparta Country Club, both the Warriors and Warriorettes defeated Coffee County Monday and then on Tuesday, WCHS played host to Cookeville for a varsity girls’ match and a junior varsity boys’ contest. Hormilla leaves sheriff department

Detective Ruben Hormilla has accepted a position in Florida after five years with White County Sheriff Department

Detective Ruben Hormilla, who specialized in child abuse cases during his tenure with White County Sheriff Department, has moved to another position in another state after nearly five years of service to the community.
According to Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, Hormilla was offered a job at a security firm in Miami, Fla., that offered insurance and other benefits.
“He was a good officer,” Shoupe said. “But pay and benefits are the reason that good officers are leaving.”

Kidnapping and assault charges lodged against an upset grandfather

A dispute between a Fancher’s Mill Road man and his son’s girlfriend and her mother has led to the arrest of James Odis Oakley for two counts of kidnapping and one count of aggravated assault.
According to Deputy Shannon Jenkins, of White County Sheriff Department, Oakley’s son, who lived in a home next door to his father, and his girlfriend had recently returned home from the hospital after the girlfriend had just given birth to the couple’s child.
Reportedly, the son’s girlfriend was planning to leave the home to attend a baby shower with her newborn child. According to Jenkins, the child was only one … CONTINUED

Hoarding of infected cats discovered

Garbage is strewn throughout the living quarters for an individual where animal hoarding was taking place. White County Animal Shelter employees responded to the scene to rescue at least 40 cats that were diseased and dying.

White County Animal Shelter representatives have discovered yet another case of animal hoarding, this time at a residence in the eastern portion of the county, where they believe at least 40 cats, all with respiratory infections and ulcerated eyes, were living in a home that, in many places, was reportedly piled chest-high with garbage and waste.

Soccer nets district win

Goal! Annalee Cunningham’s goal just as the first half expired put the Warriorettes up 1-0 on Cumberland County. WCHS went on to the 3-0 District 6AAA win over the Lady Jets.

Getting the first win of the season is always a momentum boost for a team.
Getting that win in a district game is an even bigger boost. That’s what the Warriorette soccer team achieved Thursday in their District 6AAA opener against Cumberland County.

Peggy Faye Gentry Key

Peggy Faye Gentry Key, 54, of Cookeville, formerly of Sparta, passed away Aug. 25, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Key was born July 22, 1958, in Sparta, to Carl Douglas and Clara Williams Gentry.
She married Kenneth Wayne Key, on Oct. 29, 1977. She was a member East Sparta Church of God. She had worked at Krystal more than five years. She will be missed by everyone that she came into contact with.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth W. Key; daughter, Kenetha Renee Hastings and husband Ken; two brothers, Steve Gentry and wife Elise, Dewayne Gentry and wife Lois; sister, Karen Oliver and husband Richard; brother-in-law, … CONTINUED


WCHS sweeps 3-way golf match at Willowbrook

Under par. Cameron Bruce (above) and A.J. Wilkerson both shot under par to help the Warriors to a win in a three-way match at Willowbrook. Wilkerson shot 32 and Bruce carded a 35.

It was a great day for the White County High School golfers in a three-way match against District 6AAA teams Thursday at Willowbrook in Manchester.
Both the Warriors and Warriorettes came out victorious on the afternoon in the 9-hole match. WCHS defeated both Coffee County and Warren County.
