Anita Kay Mayfield, 51, of Cookeville, passed away Aug. 26, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Missed opportunities drop Warriors to 0-2

WCHS sweeps 3-way golf match at Willowbrook

Under par. Cameron Bruce (above) and A.J. Wilkerson both shot under par to help the Warriors to a win in a three-way match at Willowbrook. Wilkerson shot 32 and Bruce carded a 35.

It was a great day for the White County High School golfers in a three-way match against District 6AAA teams Thursday at Willowbrook in Manchester.
Both the Warriors and Warriorettes came out victorious on the afternoon in the 9-hole match. WCHS defeated both Coffee County and Warren County.

The White County High School football team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 38-14 loss at Seymour.
The two teams were locked in a 7-all tie at the half after a touchdown run by Devon Davidson accounting for the Warrior points in the first two quarters of action.
Each team scored on their initial drives of the second half keeping the score tied at 14.  However, the Eagles of Seymour outscored the Warriors 24-0 over the final quarter and a half to take the win.

Freestyle Kayaking event at Rock Island, Aug. 24-26

The World Cup event at Rock Island will give Eric Jackson, owner of Jackson Kayak, another opportunity to show off his expertise. Jackson, as well as other competitors from around the world, will participate in the event Aug. 24-26.

For the second time in six years, Rock Island will be the location for the World Cup event for Freestyle Kayaking.
“It may well be the last time for another 15-plus years before we see it again,” said Eric Jackson, owner of Jackson Kayak, in White County.
According to Jackson, the event changes countries/continents around the world every two years.

WCMS football improves to 2-0

The White County Middle School football team improved to 2-0 on the young season when they traveled to Franklin County on Tuesday and defeated South 24-0.
The defense came up with stop after stop in the game with some big tackles and also forced a few turnovers to record the shutout.
The offense added three scores to push the team to their second win of the season and the first in Central Tennessee Conference action.
The Jr. Warriors set the tone with a defensive stop on the first Trojan series of the game, but the Warrior offense went three and out. The Trojans fumbled the punt return and … CONTINUED


Warrior football looks to bounce back at Seymour Friday

Looking to regroup. The Warriors, shown above huddling around Coach Matthan Houser, will look to bounce back from Friday’s opening night loss to Smith County against the Seymour Eagles this Friday night. Kick off for the game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. central time.

The White County High School football team will be looking to put last Friday’s opening night loss behind them and get into the win column against the Seymour Eagles in their second game of the season.

Annual Aaron Shafer Memorial Ride scheduled for September 22

Aaron Shafer’s unmistakable smile is only one of the many things that endeared him to those who knew him. He passed away in February 2010 in an auto crash, but not before leaving a lasting impression on the community he loved.

The Third Annual Aaron Shafer Memorial Birthday Ride is set for Sat., Sept. 22 and has a day packed full of fun events for the entire family.
Bike rides range from 7.4 miles to 100 miles. The family ride is 7.4 miles, and adult rides are 20, 40, 60 and 100 miles. These rides are all $20.

Aaron Lenox Herd

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Aaron L. Herd, 75, passed away peacefully on Aug. 17, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Herd was born June 4, 1937 to Baxter and Millie Palmer Herd.
He served in the U.S. Navy for many years. He retired from Bush Construction after 45 years of employment.
Mr. Herd was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is known for his easy-going and kind spirit. He loved to be outside and working in the garden.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Herd, Elene Bryant; one brother, Roy Herd; and his mother-in-law, Betty Gilliam.

Disaster averted with quick action

A fire was reported in LTD Parts, located at 5538 Smithville Hwy, on Aug. 22. According to Cassville Fire Chief Tracy Dover, the dust collection system, which removes the aluminum dust from the air, had caught on fire and filled the building with smoke. The department, with assistance from Sparta Fire Department, North End Fire Department, Central View Fire Department and Mt. Gilead Fire Department, soaked the machine and extinguished the fire. Chief Dover says that no one was hurt in the incident.
