Laws change for payday loans

Tennessee has made changes to its Deferred Presentment Services Act, which governs the operation of payday lenders, which consumers who use these services should be aware of.
The new amendments expand the definition of “check” to include any authorization for electronic payments. Another major change states that no person shall engage in payday loan services in Tennessee through any means without obtaining a license with the state. Furthermore, a person is considered engaging in deferred presentment services if they induce a consumer within the state of Tennessee to enter into a deferred presentment services transaction.

Unemployment rate rises to 12.5 percent

White County is experiencing another increase in the jobless rate as indicated by the recently release of the state’s unemployment numbers.
According to Tennessee Department of Labor, White County’s jobless rate was 12.5 percent for July 2012, which is an increase from 12.1 percent in June 2012.
In July 2011, White County’s unemployment rate was 11.2 percent.
Jobless rates for the five surrounding counties were: Cumberland, 9.4 percent; DeKalb, 8.7 percent; Putnam, 8.6 percent; Van Buren, 12.6 percent; and Warren, 10.2 percent.
White and Hardeman counties tied for 11th place for counties with the highest unemployment rates for July 2012. Van Buren County is listed in 10th place. … Read More

John Dee Hastings, 72, of Spencer, passed away Aug. 31, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
MR. Hastings was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Stevenson, Ala., to Alvie Emory and Eva Louise Burnett Hastings.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sept. 3, 2012, at Spencer Funeral Home.

Willease Deering Carter, 78, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 2, 2012.
Mrs. Carter was born Sept. 5, 1933, in Sparta, to Lee Deering and Clarsie Mae Cash Deering.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lee and Clarsie Cash Deering, and her husband of 52 years, Orby Carter.

Ellen Marie Young, 82, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 1, 2012,at her residence.
Mrs. Young was born June 6, 1930, in White County, the daughter of Jesse Lee and Beulah Stinnett.
She was a member of DeRossett Church of Christ.
Mrs. Young would often refer to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “my Babies.” In return, they would refer to her as Gran-Gran.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin V. Young Jr.; three sons, Jimmy W. Young, Johnnie D. Young, Bobby L. Young; one brother J.D. Stinnett; and two sisters, Malba J. Stinnett and Lillan L. Stinnett.

Earl E. Jenkins, 89, of Ferguson, Mo., passed away Aug. 27, 2012, at DePaul Hospital, in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Jenkins was born April 28, 1923, in Sparta, to Ephriam and Ethel Moore Jenkins.
He and Billie J. Reed were married April 19, 1965, in Waterloo, Ill. She preceded him death.
Mr. Jenkins served in the U.S. Navy and worked for Lou Fusz as parts and labor manager more than 30 years. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jackie King; brother, Carl Jenkins; and a great-granddaughter.

Ivan Ware Jr., 75, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 2, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Ware was born March 22, 1937, in Springfield, Ill., to Ivan Ware Sr. and Myrtle Painter Ware.
He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years after which he retired.

Benjamin Finley Howell

Benjamin Finley Howell, 72, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 1, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
He was born in White County to Faye Howell.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his mother; one daughter, Joan Gail White; brother James Howell; and sister Nellie Howell Redmon.
He was a retired logger.
Survivors include his son, Gene Howell, of Sparta; one daughter, Connie Kim Hatfield, of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Barbara Mathis, Carlena Nabors, both of Cookeville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Sept. 3, 2012, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Rice Cemetery. Dr. Troy Rice will officiate.

Mrs. Talley was born Sept. 11, 1911, in White County, to Hoyt Spain and Mary Rebecca Windham Spain.
She was a member of Central Church of Christ for many years. Mrs. Talley was a loving wife, mother and granny. Also in her life adventures she was a beautician and nurse for many years.

The Cavaliers edged the Warriors 21-14 in the final minute of the contest making it 17 consecutive defeats at the hands of Cookeville for WCHS.

WCHS golfers rack up more wins to start the week

A pair of good rounds. Tommy Sparkman turned in a couple of good rounds recently for the Warrior golf team. On Monday, he shot a 36 to help the Warriors to a win over Coffee County. WCHS hosts Oakland Thursday.

The WCHS golf team continued to pick up momentum in their season as they added more district wins.
Playing on back-to-back days at the Sparta Country Club, both the Warriors and Warriorettes defeated Coffee County Monday and then on Tuesday, WCHS played host to Cookeville for a varsity girls’ match and a junior varsity boys’ contest. Golf completes busy week

Saving best for last. The WCHS golf team played their final home match Thursday at the Sparta Country Club and A.J. Wilkerson turned in one of his best outings. Wilkerson, a senior who has committed to TTU, shot a 4-under 66 to lead the Warriors to a win over Oakland.

The White County High School golf team completed a busy week of action by hosting an 18-hole match at the Sparta Country Club on Thursday.

WCHS soccer & volleyball suffer defeats on the road

Both the White County High School and volleyball teams suffered defeats on the road Thursday.
The Warriorette volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Warren County in District 6AAA action.
The Lady Pioneers took the 25-21 win in game one, but the Warriorettes bounced back for the 25-20 victory in the second set. Warren County wrapped up the match with victories in the next two games (25-18 and 25-21).
The Warriorette junior varsity won their match (25-19, 23-25 and 15-10).
The loss dropped the Warriorette varsity to 2-8 overall and to 0-2 in the district. The Warriorettes host Upperman Tuesday at 6 p.m. The junior varsity match is … Read More
