Vehicular assault charges filed in Nov. 2011 crash

After a November 2011 crash left an 8-year-old child injured, White County Grand Jury indicted Jeffery Wayne Wilson, of Sparta, for vehicular assault, and Trooper Kevin Ballew of the Tennessee Highway Patrol arrested him Sept. 10, 2012.
According to Ballew, the crash occurred when Wilson reportedly crossed the centerline and hit another vehicle head-on near Wheat’s Curve, on McMinnville Highway.
Ballew said an 8-year-old child was seriously injured in the crash and is still recovering from those injuries 10 months later.
While there was no alcohol in Wilson’s system, other substances were reportedly detected in a blood test.

Warriors take on state’s 5th ranked team Friday

Raising helmets on first win. The Warriors are coming off their first victory of the season, a 12-7 win at Coffee County, and will need the momentum from that game as they travel to Livingston Friday night to take on the Wildcats, who are ranked number five in the state in Class 4A. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.

Having already played two teams that were ranked at the time the Warrior football team played them, that schedule gets even rougher this Friday when WCHS travels to Livingston to take on the state’s fifth ranked Class 4A team.

WCHS student organizing race for Clean Water Fund

Giving back. Megan Holland, a WCHS freshman who runs cross country, has organized the Light in the Dark 5k race for September 28th. She will donate all proceeds to the Clean Water Fund.

Megan Holland is a freshman at White County High School and a member of the school’s cross country team.
In addition to her school studies, her training for the cross country team and her involvement with her church’s youth group, Holland has decided to undertake a new endeavor.

EMS director named

After several months of indecision and failure to approve the county executive’s recommendations for director of White County Emergency Medical Services, commissioners voted Monday night in favor of Billy Price, a longtime EMS employee and paramedic to fill the position that was vacated in April 2012 with the retirement of Ron Bennett.
The final decision to hire Price was made during the Sept. 17, 2012, meeting of White County Board of Commissioners.
Price had met with commissioners Sept 10, 2012, during the meetings of Steering Committee A and Steering Committee B.

Charlie Lowe, 69, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 17, 2012, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Lowe was born April 3, 1943, in Putnam County, to Luther and Bertha Louella Cooley Lowe.
He worked more than 30 years for White County Highway Department.
Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul Eugene Lowe; brother J.W. Lowe; and stepdaughter, Sabrina Wright.

William Eugene “Bill” Smith, 83, of the Eastland community, passed away Sept. 17, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born June 3, 1929, in the Eastland community to Pete and Anna Dodson Smith.
He was retired from Ford Motor Company, in Illinois, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randall Eugene Smith; and two brothers, Thomas Lee Smith and James Edward Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Kilgore Smith;

Joe Nathan Looney, 70 of Sparta, passed away Sept. 18, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Looney was born Feb. 4, 1942, in Walling, te Roy Nathan and Frances Russell Looney.
He was a retired bridge builder.
Mr. Looney was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. George Russell Looney.

White Co. Road superintendent clarifies Doyle storm cleanup

Clay Parker of the Highway Department wants White County to know that the department is taking care of county roads.
During the September meeting of the Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Mayor Ray Spivey said that the county would not pay for the removal of tree limbs that had fallen during a storm on Gooseneck Road and Highway 70.
Mayo Spivey stated that the City of Doyle hired a Cookeville tree removal company and paid them $750 to clean up the fallen trees.

Two Warriorette teams drop district contests to Lady Cavaliers

Action in front of the net. The Warriorettes and Cookeville soccer teams battle in front of the net. Cookeville took the 8-0 win over WCHS on Thursday.

Thursday was not a good day for a pair of Warriorette teams as they took on the Cookeville Lady Cavaliers in District 6AAA contests.
Both the White County High School volleyball and soccer teams suffered defeats at the hands of archrival, Lady Cavs.
The Warriorette volleyball team traveled to Cookeville to take on the league leading team. WCHS did manage to keep the match close early and took a game from the Lady Cavs. The home team, however, regrouped and took … Read More

Region runner up. Shelby Johnson finished second in the region in just her second year of high school golf. That finish advances Johnson to the state tournament next week. She is pictured with WCHS golf coach, Eric Mitchell.

Region champ. A.J. Wilkerson, pictured with WCHS golf coach, Eric Mitchell, captured the Region 3AAA championship shooting an even par 72 at Harrison Bay on Thursday. That win gives Wilkerson his second trip to the state tournament.
