Revenue collections are down more than $164,000

Tennessee Department of Revenue has released the most recent figures for sales tax collection, with White County’s monies decreasing from September 2012.
According to the statistics, White County state sales tax collections for October 2012 were $1,040, 295. Local sales tax collections are listed at $295,529.
These numbers are down a total of $164,087 from the figures for September 2012, when state sales tax collections were $1,81,723 and local sales tax collections were $318,188.
The October 2012 state sales tax numbers are also less than the October 2011 figure of $1,062,385. However, local sales tax collections were somewhat higher, with $281, 452 listed in October 2011 compared to … Read More

Walling woman flown to Erlanger after a collision with deer

At approximately 7 a.m. on Nov. 15, emergency workers responded to the scene of a single-vehicle crash where a vehicle reportedly struck a deer, causing the driver to suffer serious injuries.
According to Sgt. Lanny Wheeler of the White County Sheriff Department, Leta Humphrey, 62, of Walling was traveling on Pollard Road in a 2012 Toyota Camry, when her vehicle struck a deer in the road.
She was less than two miles from her home.
Sgt. Wheeler says that the deer came through the car’s windshield, striking Humphrey and causing serious injuries to her neck area.

FFA annual holiday sales have begun

White County High School’s FFA Chapter has officially kicked off its annual holiday poinsettia and fruit sales. Monies garnered from these sales go into the FFA account to help various projects, as well as defray expenses to the state and national conventions. There are two choices of poinsettias: a large, florist quality poinsettia is $20, while the standard size is $10. Boxes of apples, navel oranges, juice oranges, red grapefruits and tangelos may be purchased. After shooting free throws so well in the season opener at Kingston, the Warrior basketball team struggled from the charity stripe against Walker Valley in the home opener Friday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.

Warriorettes improve to 2-0 with home opener win

The White County High School Warriorettes improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 78-61 win over visiting Walker Valley at Roy Sewell Gymnasium on Friday.
The Warriorettes overcame 25 turnovers in the game to stay unbeaten on the season. Walker Valley attempted 33 three pointers in the contest and made just nine of them. They shot 36.7 percent from the field while the Warriorettes made good on 51 percent of their shots.

District 6AAA tweaked for 2013-14

Every four years the TSSAA, the governing body for high school athletics in the state of Tennessee, takes a look at the classification numbers for their members schools and realigns accordingly.
The White County High School teams will remain in District 6AAA, but the teams in that district will change somewhat starting with the 2013-14 school year.
Warren County and Cookeville will remain in the same district as the White County schools. Those three have been a part of the same district since 1983-84. That is for all sports except football. Billie Carol Ward, 80, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 14, 2012, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mrs. Ward was born Sept. 29, 1932, in Spencer, the daughter of Bransford and Elsie Hale Madewell.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Nov. 17, 2012, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Crain Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-9 p.m., Nov. 16, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Nov. 17, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morris was born July 26, 2919, in Overton County, to Alfred Jackson and Ida Phillips Barlow.

Mr. Humphrey was born July 1, 1947, in White County, to Earnest Thurman “Speck” Humphrey and Willie Beatrice Wright Humphrey.

Ronnie Burress, 69, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 14, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Burress was born Feb. 12, 1943, in LaFollette, Tenn., to Wadena Blankenship Burress and Edward Burress.
He was a long-haul truck driver.
Mr. Burress was preceded in death by his father; wife, Shirley Burress; and sister, Helen Ford.
