Bobby Haile was a winner at all levels in his sports

Bobby Haile. The 1960 graduate of White County High School, who played both football and basketball for the Warriors and then went on to play football at Tech, will be inducted into the WCHS Hall of Fame. Haile also had a stellar 40-year coaching career.

Bobby Haile won at whatever level he was competing and in whatever role he was undertaking.
The 1960 graduate of White County High School played on and starred on both the Warrior basketball and football teams. He turned that into a successful football career at Tennessee Tech and then when his playing days were over, he did nothing but win as a coach. … Read More


Governor’s Highway Safety Office addresses 166 percent increase in fatalities in Upper Cumberland

At a press conference in Cookeville on Jan. 24, Clint Shrum, of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, while surrounded by law enforcement officers from across the Upper Cumberland, addressed the media about the 166 percent increase in traffic fatalities in the region compared to this time last year.
According to Shrum, there have been eight fatal traffic crashes so far in 2013 in the Upper Cumberland region, compared to three last year. Of these eight deaths, three involved impaired drivers, two involved commercial vehicles and one involved a motorcycle.

Gaines Herbert Hale

Gaines Herbert Hale, 89, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 29, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Hale was born April 12, 1923, in the Lost Creek Community, of White County, to late Enoch and Emily Sophronia Wilson Hale.
He was a retired farmer and miller. He owned and operated Hale’s Feed Mill for many years and was a pig farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot. He joined Sparta First Baptist Church, on Dec. 2, 1945, and was a very active member in his 68 years of membership.

UCHRA vehicle overturns on Old Kentucky Road

At approximately 6 p.m. on Jan. 25, the Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to a crash scene on Old Kentucky Road, in White County, involving an Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency vehicle that had overturned.
According to Sgt. Jimmy Jones, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, a UCHRA van driven by Teresa Hutchings, 43, of Sparta, ran off the road and overturned, landing on its roof.
Responding Trooper Jeremy Newcome noted that Hutchings allegedly had an odor of alcohol on her person and breath. Hutchings reportedly told Newcome that she had been drinking before getting behind the wheel but had not had anything to drink while driving.

Robert Agee was a three-sport standout at WCHS

Robert Agee. The 1966 graduate of WCHS was a standout three-sport athlete for the Warriors. He went on to play basketball at the University of Florida. He scored well over a 1,000 points during his high school basketball career.

When analyzing Hall of Fame credentials, Robert Agee had a resume that covered not one and not even two sports, but he was a standout in three sports at White County High School.

Grady Vaughn Sparkman

 Grady Vaughn Sparkman, 90, went home to heaven on Jan. 25, 2013.
Born in Quebeck, Tenn., on April 28, 1922, Mr. Sparkman was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Virginia Hutchings Sparkman, for 70 years. Mr. Sparkman worked for Sparta Electric, Water and Sewer System, in Sparta, for 34 years, starting at the bottom and working his way up to manager.
Mr. Sparkman was a volunteer fireman more than 25 years. He was a member of the Civitan Club, Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church.

Business offers firearms and training

It’s been a long time coming for Tony May and the staff at Guns and More — a new one-stop shop for firearms, tactical gear and training.
On Monday, Feb. 4, the staff will celebrate the store’s official grand opening with a slew of events and they’re inviting the public to be a part of the celebration.
The day will kick off at 8 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce.

Numbers continue to rise for those out of work in White Co.

White County has inched up the scale for its jobless rate from 10.6 percent for November 2012 to 11 percent for December 2012.
According to Tennessee Department of Labor, unemployment figures for White County, in 2012, reached its highest in July at 12.4 percent and dipped to its lowest rate of 10.6 percent, which was the figure for three of the 12 months: March, April and November. September was next in line at 10.9 percent, followed by October and December with 11 percent unemployment rates. James Leonard “Jim” Kellams

James Leonard “Jim” Kellams, 73, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 28, 2013,a t Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Kellams was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Indiana, to Vernie Ray and Isabel Johnson Kellams.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In keeping with Mr. Kellams’ wishes, his choice was cremation.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Marie Denton Adcock, 75, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Adcock was born Oct. 12, 1937, in White County, to James Elmer and Lena Mae Graham Denton.

Jimmy D. Gunter Sr., 47, of Spencer, passed away Jan. 27, 2013, at his residence after a 10- month battle with esophageal cancer, with his loving wife of 29 years, Frances Young Wallace Gunter. at his bedside.
Mr. Gunter was born June 19, 1965, in Roane County, to Richard Arthell Gunter and Louella Wilson Gunter.
Mr. Gunter worked as a welder/pipefitter at Tennessee Metal Fabrications, in Rock Island. He was also a cattle and farm hand, an avid fisherman, and firearm and archery hunter. Stolen guns recovered

Charles Cole, an avid gun collector, recovers his stolen weapons at the White County Sheriff Department on Jan. 29. His nephew, Jeffery McCloud, has been charged with theft over $1,000 for reportedly stealing the guns while Cole was at church.

Detective Jacob Groce of White County Sheriff Department recently received a tip about a large cache of firearms that had been stolen that led to the recovery and return to their rightful owner within five days of the theft, thanks to the owner keeping records of the serial numbers.

William Ralph Padgett

William Ralph Padgett, age 78, went peacefully to be with the Lord, on Jan. 30, 2013, after a long battle with cancer, with his family by his side.
After Mr. Padgett returned to Crossville from his tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he married Wanda Jean Brewer. Together they had three children. Jean passed away in 1994, and he later married Peggy Luanna Key Landers.
Mr. Padgett was born into a family of 10 children. His mother, Elizabeth “Bessie” Padgett Parsons, predeceased him, as did all his siblings, except one sister, Edith Padgett Jordan (Ed Ryback) of Crossville.

Man charged with aggravated child abuse of 2-year-old

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the White County Sheriff Department investigated a case of suspected child abuse over the weekend that resulted in a White County man being arrested for allegedly abusing a 2-year-old boy.
According to White County Sheriff Department Public Information Officer Detective Chris Isom, on Jan. 27, the department received a call that a two-year-old boy suffering from a depressed skull fracture, broken bones and numerous bruises and contusions, had been transported to the Highlands Medical Center by his mother and Andrew Clayton Parker, 25, of Sparta.

Alida Mae Creason

Alida Mae Creason, 76, passed away Jan. 28, 2013.
Mrs. Creason was born Sept. 4, 1936, in Cumberland County, to Meridia and Rosie Jones.
She devoted her life to her loving family and made sure she helped anyone she could. She was a wonderful wife and an amazing mother. She enjoyed music, dancing, crafts, flowers, gardening, cooking for her loved ones and making her homemade candy.
