Bernice Bumbalough, in the red shirt, plays a game of cards with friends at the Sparta-White County Senior Center.

Walk inside the Sparta-White County Senior Center and you’ll most likely find Bernice Bumbalough, 71, at a card table playing spades, participating in an exercise class or preparing to deliver meals to needy seniors.
In 2008, Bumbalough retired from Federal-Mogul after working there more than three decades.
The next year, her husband of 43 years lost his battle with cancer. The couple never had children.
“So, that left me alone,” she said.
At the persistence of her neighbor, Bumbalough visited the Sparta-White County Senior Center.
“I wasn’t too interested … Read More

Posted on April 29, 2013 12:12 am by Sparta Live

THP Trooper Ronnie Simmons, pictured above, along with Trooper David Hickey, performed a special patrol, on April 24, to ensure drivers were stopping for school buses that were picking up or dropping off students.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol was out in full force, on April 24, to support a national effort against illegal school bus passing.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 19 school-age children die in school transportation-related traffic crashes each year. Since 1998, 149 school-age pedestrians (younger than 19) have died in school transportation-related crashes.
About one-half (47 percent) of all school-age pedestrians killed in school transportation-related crashes were between the … Read More

Posted on April 29, 2013 12:12 am by Sparta Live

Rachel Billingsley (standing) founded The Stewart Foundation in honor of her mother, Phylene Stewart (seated). Stewart suffers from multiple sclerosis. The Stewart Foundation will work to help patients get the medications and equipment necessary to treat and cope with MS and lupus.

Dealing with the complications related to lupus and multiple sclerosis can be difficult. Both diseases are autoimmune diseases that damage various parts of the body.
While lupus and MS have their own unique set of symptoms, both diseases have something in common — the high cost of prescriptions needed to treat the disease.
That’s where The Stewart Foundation steps in.
The newly-formed foundation was created to … Read More

Soccer nets another “W”

Posted on April 29, 2013 12:12 am by Sparta Live

Making a stop. Warrior goalkeeper Tommy Odom makes a play on the ball during a recent WCHS soccer game. The Warriors shut out Smith County 5-0 on Thursday.

Not winning has been a rare thing for the Warrior soccer team this spring, however, their previous two outings had failed to yield a “W” for the team.
They corrected that Thursday night in Carthage with a 5-0 win over Smith County.
After having won seven of their first eight games, the Warriors had ended their last two games with a narrow loss and a tie. Thursday’s game was about getting back to where they needed to be as the … Read More

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and EMS workers rescue a passenger in a mock DUI crash performed for White County High School juniors and seniors so they will know the dangers of drinking and driving with the upcoming prom and graduation celebrations.

Christian Faith Ministry helping those in need

Posted on April 29, 2013 12:12 am by Sparta Live

A volunteer shakes the hand of a recipient of food donations from Christian Faith Ministry. CFM says their mission is to offer a hand up, not a handout by providing food to those in need.

It’s not a hand out. It’s a hand up.
Christian Faith Ministry started serving the community four years ago after Brother Paul Fike and his wife Linda heard the call to serve people in the community.
“It has totally been by God’s hand,” Bro. Fike said.
The 501c(3) ministry helped provide food to more than 30,000 people in 2012, Fike says.
“The need is great out there,” she said.
Each year, the ministry … Read More
