Cole hurls no-hitter for WCHS baseball

The Warrior baseball team bounced back from their district losses to Warren County in high fashion on Friday in Gainesboro.
Junior hurler Dustin Cole pitched a no-hitter and the Warriors rolled to the 9-0 win over the Blue Devils of Jackson County High School.

Even though it’s been winter and football season was a long way off, the Warrior football team has not been idle.
The team has been hitting the weights hard in preparation for the 2013 season and the difference shows. Anyone who hasn’t seen the players in a while will notice an immediate change in the players after their off season workouts. The difference also shows in the max that the players have achieved.

WCHS soccer adds two more wins

Over and under. WCHS soccer player, Rex Frame, goes high to avoid contact with the Warren County goalkeeper during Thursday’s District 6AAA win over the Pioneers for the Warriors. WCHS took the 5-2 win over Warren County and then defeated Livingston 2-0 on Friday to improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Warrior soccer team stepped up their level of competition at the end of the week, but the result was still the same – two more wins.

Softball loses heartbreaker to Franklin County

The Warriorette softball team was trying to snap a six-game losing streak Friday when they played host to visiting Franklin County.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie through six innings of play, but the Lady Rebels broke through for the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on an unearned run. They held WCHS scoreless again in the bottom of the seventh and left Sparta with the 1-0 victory.

Penalties may be increased for specific crimes against emergency services personnel

Tennessee lawmakers are reviewing a bill this week that would increase the penalties for assault, aggravated assault and second degree murder when the victim is a law enforcement officer, emergency medical or rescue worker, emergency medical technician, paramedic or firefighter who the person knows or has reason to know is engaged in the performance of official duties.
(1) The classification for assault is increased from a Class A or B misdemeanor accompanied by an enhanced fine of up to $2,500, which only applies to assaults against law enforcem ent officers under present law, to a Class E felony;

Spencer council members discuss grants, revenues

A short prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the flag has become the traditional beginning to each Spencer City Council meeting, which is held the last Thursday of each month. The March 28th meeting was no exception.
With the full body present, as well as George Burkes, municipal judge, Edward Boring, county attorney, Eddie Carter, police chief, and Zeda Hillis, city recorder, the business of the City of Spencer was discussed.

Pregnancy shelter coming to Sparta

Work begins on the Life Worth Living shelter, a shelter for homeless, struggling new moms. The shelter is expected to open within the coming year.

Life Worth Living, a pro-life Christian shelter for homeless, soon-to-be mothers, is coming to Sparta.
Ann Eckman, CEO of the center, says the idea for the center came about in 2009.
“It was at a church service and the representative from Plateau Pregnancy (Services) in Crossville came and gave a presentation on how greatly a pregnancy shelter was needed in the area to shelter homeless pregnant women and their children,” she recalled.

Sheriff, deputy and county named in lawsuit

White County has been named in another lawsuit that also includes Sheriff Oddie Shoupe and one of his deputies in which a 30-year-old female alleges she was wrongfully incarcerated more than a week after she was arrested on charges filed against another woman with the same name.
Jo Ann Luna, of Sparta, filed the lawsuit March 8, 2013, through her attorney, Richard Brooks, of Carthage.
Luna alleges Deputy Steve Page, of White County Sheriff Department, came to her place of employment, on March 9, 2012, and advised her he had a warrant for her arrest. According to the lawsuit, Luna told Page she was not aware of any … Read More

Teachers could soon be allowed to carry guns at school

A bill proposed by one Democrat and four Republican state representatives that would allow teachers, principals and school personnel to possess a firearm on school property was placed on the Civil Justice Committee, on April 3, to be reviewed by Tennessee legislators.
If passed, this law would go into effect July 1, 2013, and apply to the 2013-2014 school year and each subsequent school year. The proposed law states the individual must possess a handgun carry permit, be authorized by the school superintendent and have had 40 hours of basic school policing training. The gun must also use frangible bullets.

Melinda Sue McCormick

Melinda Sue McCormick, 33, of Spencer, passed away March 31, 2013, at her home in Pensacola, Fla.
Mrs. McCormick was born July 14, 1979, in Livingston, to James Edward McCormick and Sally Marie Frady McCormick.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Justin McCormick.
Survivors include her parents, James and Sally McCormick, of Sparta; brothers, Michael McCormick and wife Wendy, of Sparta, Ben McCormick, of Sparta; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service will be 1p.m., April 5, 2013, at Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Frasier Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., April 4, at the funeral home.

Ella Edith Davis Palmer, 91, of Sparta, passed away April 2, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Chattanooga.
Mrs. Palmer was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Tunnel Hill, Ga.
She was retired from Thomas Industries and went on to volunteer at White County Hospital more than 30 years and was active with the Boy Scouts. She was a long-time member of Sparta First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her father, Sam Davis; mother, Annie Ledford Napier; husband, Jack Trail Palmer; sons, Wayne Palmer, Dennis Palmer; grandson, Dennis Palmer; sister, Ruth Hilburn; and brother, Frank Davis.

Baseball swept by Pioneers in 6AAA series

Avoiding the tag. Dustin Cole dives back into first base avoiding the tag of the Pioneer player. Warren County defeated the Warriors 6-5 on Monday and then took the 6-2 win in Sparta on Tuesday.

The Warrior baseball was not able to use the momentum from the first part of their season as they went into their opening District 6AAA series against Warren County.

WCHS soccer improves to 4-0 with 8-0 win

Another hat trick. For the third time this season, the Warrior soccer team has had a player net a hat trick. During Tuesday’s 8-0 win over Bledsoe County, Jordan Dukes scored three goals to lead WCHS to their fourth win of the season. They will host Warren County Thursday in their 6AAA opener at 6 p.m.

After having been idle for 11 days, the Warrior soccer team showed no ill effects from the layoff for spring break as they picked up where they left off with an 8-0 win over Bledsoe County in Pikeville on Tuesday night.
