Josiah Nicolas Matheney

Josiah Nicolas Matheney, age1 day, passed away July 30, 2013, at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville.
Josiah was born July 29, 2013, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include his parents, Heather and Buddy Matheney, Jr., of Sparta; brother, Elisha Matheney; grandparents, Lavonda and Ron Fry Sr., Joyce and Buddy Matheney Sr.; aunts, Amy (Richard) Bumbalough, Chrystal Fry, Priscilla Cunningham; Ron Fry Jr.; and several special cousins.
Funeral service will be graveside at 2 p.m., Aug. 1, 2013, at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Nathan Hawkins will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Phillip Anthony Harris

Phillip Anthony Harris, 56, of Quebeck, passed away July 22, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Harris was born Oct. 27, 1956, in Frankfort, Ind., the son of Bud and Bertha Martin Morgan.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Aug. 2, 2013, at the falls in Lost Creek.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Tennessee Highway Patrol begins accepting applications for new trooper cadets, deadline August 6

Tennessee Highway Patrol is opening the application process for men and women interested in a career as a state trooper. Applications will only be accepted online from Wednesday, July 31 through Tuesday, August 6, 2013. The new Trooper Cadet Class is scheduled to begin Feb. 1, 2014.
Individuals interested in applying for the position of State Trooper must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. Citizen and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of college or military or previous law enforcement experience is preferred. No applicants with felony convictions will be considered.

Henry England “Doc” Randolph, 1935-2013

Henry England “Doc” Randolph, of Birmingham, Ala., passed away July 29, 2013, after a courageous and resilient battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS).
Mr. Randolph was born on May 21, 1935, and grew up on a farm in Sparta. He was the son of the late John Tom Randolph and Mary Louise Randolph, of Sparta.
He graduated from White County High School, in Sparta, continuing his education at Tennessee Tech University earning his B.S. degree. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Dairy Technology and Microbiology from The Ohio State University.

Clayton Haskell Jones, 88, of Sparta, passed away July 29, 2013, at Highlands Medical Center, of Sparta.
Mr. Jones was born August 21, 1924, in White County, to late Tillmon and Sarah Felts Jones.
He was a farmer and also had worked in a factory.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Louise Graham “Nancy” Jones; and son, Gregory Lee Jones.
Mr. Jones was the last of all of his siblings.

Thelma Lee Bailey White, 89, passed away July 29, 2013, at her residence.
Mrs. White was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Madison County, Ala., to George Albert and Savonia McClure Bailey.
She was the oldest of seven children.
Mrs. White worked for Redstone Arsenal during the war where she met her husband Ernest, married and moved to Tennessee. She worked at Spartan Shirt Factory and then at Mallory Timers where she retired.
Mrs. White loved her family and nature. She loved watching the birds and squirrels in the trees in her yard.

Douglas Robert Rosinski, 66, of Sparta, passed away July 29, 2013, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Rosinski was born May 5, 1947, in Highland Park, Mich., got Leo A and Bernice Elizabeth Miller Rosinski.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Eastland receives new fire truck with help from commissioners

Eastland volunteer firefighters are extremely proud of their new truck that will allow them to provide better protection for their community.

The F-16 fighter jet made its first flight. The oil crises ended. Hank Aaron beat Babe Ruth for the all-time home run record. Stephen King published his first novel, Carrie. “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand was the number one song. The Godfather: Part II was released. All these events occurred in 1974, the year Eastland Volunteer Fire Department’s recently replaced fire truck was manufactured.

Robert B. Smith, Jr., 87, of Sparta, passed away July 24, 2013, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Robert B. Smith Sr. and Marion Ballantyne Smith.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a mechanical engineer
Mr. Smith was also preceded by his parents and first wife, Mary Frances Willis Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Cox Smith, of Sparta; two daughters, Betsy Towers, of New Port Richie, Fla., Janet Zimmerman, of Boca Raton, Fla.; two granddaughters; one great-grandchild; and one sister.

Belva Jeanett Joseph, 73, of Sparta, passed from this life Saturday, July 27, 2013 at her residence.
Mrs. Joseph was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Monterey, the daughter of Furman and Jewell Kelsey Womack.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m., Aug. 1, 2013, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Andrea King will officiate. Visitation with the family will be 6-7 p.m., Aug. 1, at the funeral home.
